@@BowenAero Thanks, that's consistent with the answer I got as well. So I now have a light shining brightly in the headrest of my Fly Baby. Never-the-less, it was a good solution and I don't think I would have thought of mounting it internally, which was massively easier than retrofitting it to tail of my plane, without seeing your video. Thanks again!

So initial they told me that the capability would be there to turn it off, but the final version doesn’t have that capability, so the light is on when in use. They were fine with me mounting it inside the fabric and when I had my transponder cert done we had no issue with the transmission from the interior location.

@@BowenAero That's good to know re the tube frame not interfering with the satellite signal. I understand that it would'nt have trouble picking up your transponder signal but it was the satellite and ground station signals I was thinking of. I received mine about a year ago along with an AV-30. I got an email from them immediately thereafter asking me to send it back to them because of a recall. Come to think of it I'm not sure why I sent the AV-30 back as the recall had to do with only the X. So . . . I must have had one of the earlier models of the X. Prior to my order I had asked them about the option of turning the light off and they said no. Couldn't be done. Seems like that would be an easy thing to provide. Either a software switch or a separate line for the light. Either one would seem to be easy options. Oh well. I haven't re-ordered yet. I'm still deciding whether to go with the X or something else.

Nope. That won't ever be a thing. GRT is known to work with other vendors, garmin works with garmin, and dynon works with dynon, and garmin navigators.

The GDL-82 and EchoUAT are the only solutions that are legal and provide actual anonymous mode. The reason is because the UAT box must transmit your tail number if it can't confirm the transponder is set to 1200. The tailbeacon and skybeacon can't go anonymous until it sees your transponder being hit so it will spit out your tail number until that happens. The echoUAT immediately sees that you are 1200 over the serial interface, and the GDL-82 can see that you are 1200 because it interrogates your transponder over the antenna cable as it's inserted in the path between the transponder and antenna.
