Great show and interesting. Going with the car theme. An oldie getting some refresher work done, wouldn’t it be a resto-mod? And put it in a completely different category from vintage out of the box stock and or a full modded modern versions?

Repair or upgrade but keep the old parts.

The Venoms that fetch the most money are the ones that are aesthetically pleasing-custom stock, engraving, custom barrels, and so on. A Venom-tuned rifle with busted internals is just a brick with a Venom sticker. Within the spirit of the Venom guys, they made these modifications to improve the rifles both functionally and aesthetically. It’s hard to believe they wouldn’t want you to restore or upgrade the rifle as needed to keep it performing superbly. So, if the person who now owns the Venom trademark swaps the internals, it’s still considered an original Venom because he owns the name? But if someone else does it, it’s not original anymore? That’s just silly. Great debate tho. Loved it.

Hello Gentlemen, Thank you for our latest edition of Hot Air. I'm not vastly experienced in air rifles, though super keen. I think the problem with older Venom tuned air rifles is that there are consumables involved that will wear out eventually. The older the air rifles are, the more likely they've been used, the more likely I would think parts have been replaced. If it were me, I'd want to keep my kit in tip top form. So, I think I'd replace what required renewing, though keep a logbook with photographs of what I'd replaced and write notes so nothing is forgotten or can't be argued. My Venom tuned air rifle, then wouldn't be venom tuned, in my eyes. I wouldn't be keen at all in buying a Venom tuned older air rifle as there are too many people to trust and I don't fancy that idea. If the gentleman who's purchased the Venom name from Webley, was making new Venom tuned air rifles, and I wanted one, I'd buy one, though produce a logbook with it, in case I needed to sell and produce an honest account of its history, everything timed and dated. I grew up in the eighties. I'd have loved an air rifle. The closest I came was to reading my dad's Airgun World when he was at work. The name Venom still makes my knees buckle. I wouldn't, however, even think about buying an older Venom tuned air rifle because there's too many people to rely on and to tell the truth. I'd rather buy a new quality air rifle from a quality manufacturer, made with all the latest materials, knowing it would last, with a warranty and knowing exactly what had happened to it. Sorry to drag on, everyone, but that's my honest opinion. Best wishes, Ian.

I personally think this is one of your best episodes...Indeed the debate is pertinent. Many of the Venom rifles were indeed an internal tune of the 'Power Plant' - Spring & Guide, Piston & seal - from my perspective, if these have been replaced with modern 'standard' internals (I would except VMach Piston seals and Springs being acceptable replacements - VMach has the Venom DNA via Steve Pope) it really cant be a Venom. I have a genuine Venom HW 35 'O ringed' Piston, which I'm putting into a 1976 HW 35 which I'm restoring - however I will never pass it of as a Venom, because apart from the Piston, its a standard 35 which as a whole, never been touched by Ivan, Dave(RIP) or latterly Steve(RIP). Keep up the great work

My take on original is the same as my classic series landrover , to keep it on the road or keep your gun shooting sometimes you have to change parts, just keep it in the spirit it was made as close as possible, got into a big argument on here with a company that are taking out perfectly good engines out of classic cars and modifying to electric.

Venom made back in the day were the real deal,could never afford 1 on my paper round but was lucky enough to get a verified hw80 lazaglide last year in a maple gary cane stock,it shoots mint so im lucky that nothing needs doing to it...if i had 1 that needed tweeking up then i would get it done...as for venom selling their name...well thats all they sold,the bame not their work!.some great tuners out there today that do work as good as, but if i bought a gun from whoever purchased the name in my opinion it would not be a venom. Great video lads,keep up the good work 👍🏻

I think it's nice to use the gun in good order if possible, and if you need to change anything on it just keep the original parts in a box , so if you ever sell it you can pass the original Parts with it .

If the piston cylinder ring is cracked on a motor, it needs to be replaced and shouldn't affect the overall value of the car or bike. Engines have parts that wear out or fail, same with air guns and replacing parts (with originals if possible) should apply. Mind you, I would still like to know if it's all 100% original or been refurbed. If I bought it as a collectable rather than a shooter (I can't imagine buying anything I don't want to shoot) it's not as important if it's inaccurate, underpowered and basically useless, I wouldn't pay top end price for it though like I would an original in good working condition.
@Getting-Older
@Getting-Older Ай бұрын
Interesting question about what makes something collectable. For me its what grabs me when I see it, could be the stock, could be its been tuned by a genuinely skilled gunsmith or the fact the stock is unique and the skilled work in the stock screams out. Some like the rare kit, I think thats what I love about it all as its very individual. As for price, tough one. Some kit shouts quality and skill, others not so obvious and I think and as a relative newbie to this I will need require more knowledge.

If an original Venom or Airmasters etc spring was bent or broken I'd have to replace it. I can see how in a way that's a shame and ideally you'd want everything completely original but so long as it's done competently (not a hack job obviously) and to a standard that does the other work justice that seems like the only option. For me an air rifle being in good working order is a main part of it's appeal, at the end of the day it's still a tuned rifle. Venom HW35 with Schmidt & Bender scope, that's a keeper!
