Hello 2Legs Faithful!
This week we chose to analyse (in real time) another vintage Paul interview. As we have done in the past, (1986's Paul McCartney Special) etc. This time around we opted to view the rare 1980 Interview conducted by Tim Rice of all people which was recorded in May 1980 and later released that August. This was a promotional piece to promote "McCartney II" which had just been released.
We like to focus on interviews pre-1989/90 when Paul's interviews became more formulaic with his answers. And certainly any interview pre-December 1980 are valuable. We find that to be the case with this one. And would a video interview about a new solo album in 1980 have happened without the events that happened in January of that year? We discuss all this and more.
How do you feel about Paul's interviews over the years? Let us know in the comments!

I remember watching this interview back in 1980 as a 16 year old kid and I would've been all over it. One of the interesting aspects is having Tim Rice whose a lyricist talk to Paul about that side of things. Also, having a creative person interviewing Paul helps a great deal and Tim Rice's gentle delivery helps with the odd awkward question, very George Martinesque! One guy i would love Paul to be interviewed by would be Rick Beato an ex music professor, music producer and musician who has 4 million followers on his YT channel, his interviews with artists like Sting, Brian May and many others are proper musical conversations and are much less inane than Paul's usual ones from the last 30 years. Andy, I have a friend who lives in Ocean, NJ who's off to see Jeff Lynne's ELO in NY too and I must say the prices for decent seats are getting out of hand over there in the US. Here in the UK I'm guessing we'll get a tour at some point as the 2020 UK tour was pandemiced out! :) I've been lucky to see Jeff's rebirth as a touring musician four times since his return and it's been a blast, to quote a famous musician.

Tom the audio is fine to me. I am a bit surprised this famous interview never came out on CD. I am referring to the “McCartney Interview” LP. That should have been on the Mc II box set. That whole ending with Victor Spinetti was not included on the McII box set.

It has gotten to the point where a lot of us long time devout fans can recite his answers pretty much verbatim before he begins answering. It would be nice if more of these interviews could be done by media people that are know to be big fans and if they weren’t confined to the same questions we have heard answered over and over.

I knew that was the same Tim Rice 🍚 who co-wrote songs in Beauty and the Beast and other Disney movies 🎥. Interviews from producers and songwriters are better than interviews from some journalist. Paul is such a genius that lyrics and music 🎵 just come to him. That’s why it’s so difficult for him to discuss his work.

I'm not sure if MPL was entirely responsible for producing this interview but I think it may have been. I believe it was shown by ITV in 1980 - I certainly remember watching it. I don't think it was shown in prime time. If it _was_ self-produced, it's not exactly the sort of thing you'd put out these days, with Tim Rice basically spending the whole thing asking why Paul didn't write some better songs. I assume that this interview is in some way related to Noosha Fox releasing a cover of Hot As Sun in 1981 with lyrics provided by Tim Rice. (It's not her finest hour, or Tim Rice's, or Paul McCartney's.)
