Absolutely agree with this. College especially was like drinking from a fire hose. I struggle to remember even a single book title from my world lit class, let alone any of the content. The few things I do remember from college were labs where I spent a period of weeks studying one concept in a hands-on way.

This was well-written and well-stated. I teach introductory Latin and Ancient Greek in the middle and high school range at a wonderful classical academy. I am also a first-year teacher, coming straight out of a bachelor's degree in classics, and am currently pursuing an MSc in the same. I often find my scholars too distracted by the number of things that they are juggling in their academic and personal lives, and every new school day I must again break through their ever-reconstituted resistance to what ought to be the foundation of their entire education. If I could build a school, I would certainly agree with C.S. Lewis (not a hard thing to do) and limit the number of subjects and unleash the quality of those retained. After all, it is law and limit which actually set us free to bound across endless possibilities. The utilitarian phantasm which haunts our educational culture is not so easily outdone. The words "classical" printed or posted upon our letterheads and doorways do not function as effective exorcisms for such a spectre as the utilitarian abyss. This problem is one of the primary reasons why, despite my career and devotion to classical education at the private, charter and public levels, my wife and I cannot wait to homeschool any future children in a curriculum which favors multum non multa.
