Welcome back to our Caravan Build Series!
In this episode we:
• Removed the pop top roof, sanded, bogged and painted it
• Installed the new pop top skirt from Bagsnswags
• Removed water damaged timber from the top of the aluminium frame and replaced it
• Added aluminium framing to the top of the van to support the pop top collar
• Made a new meranti pop top collar
• Weather sealed the top of the van
Stay tuned for Episode 5 coming soon where we sand and paint the outside of Sunny, reseal windows and install the new J-rail.
Any questions regarding this project, drop them in the comments below or, reach us on our socials @jossandell.
Cheers!

Hi im wondering how long and how many ppl did it take to replace the canvas ? I'm about to replace mine and wanting a rough time frame ?
@jossandell
@jossandell Күн бұрын
Hi there, definitely allow a good few hours with an extra set of hands to replace it. My wife and I did it together and it is easier with a second person to help get it positioned correctly. If we could offer any advice it would be to start with the top and then finish with securing the bottom. We did it the opposite way and screwed the bottom in first and it made it difficult to get the top done. All the best with it!

Hi there it looks great but can I ask did you have to tie the scissor lifts in the open position to stop them opening all the way or exploding open when removing the roof. Cheers 🍻

Hi, thank you! Yes, once I loosened off the screws holding the scissors to the pop top, I pulled them closed and put a cable tie around them to hold them closed 🙂

Looks like you had to cut the aluminium to put in the frame replacement. How did you join it back up and water proof the bit cut out? I have some holes so interested in options for sealing the roof holes. Many thanks. Prob have some other questions sorry 😁
@jossandell
@jossandell Жыл бұрын
Hi Andrew, which bit of the aluminium frame are you referring to exactly? I didn’t cut any of the original aluminium frame but I did notch out the timber on top of the aluminium frame to add in the aluminium running width ways of the van to support the pop top collar if that makes sense? Where abouts in the van are the holes you mentioned? Hit me with any questions and I’ll try my best to answer them for you 😁

@@jossandell Watched again, at the 6.01 mark it shows the overlap. Then at the 7.23 mark the sheet is gone from the from side of the roof. Sorry maybe I didn't explain myself. Just curious if this was a joined sheet and you just overlapped it as per before. I'm starting to do my J-Rails and haven't got to that part of lifting the sheet up. Hope that makes sense. Cheers 👍
@jossandell
@jossandell Жыл бұрын
@@andrewmadge ah yes! So I notched out the timber on top of the aluminium frame and then that piece of aluminium I added running width ways of the van I pop riveted in place from underneath into the existing aluminium frame. For the long sheet that sits on top, the way I fixed it back on was once the new pop top collar was installed back on top of the new aluminium framing I added, the aluminium clad that goes around the pop top collar was then stapled back on to the timber pop top collar and into the timber on top of the frame under the j-rail. 😁

@@jossandell Perfect, I watched it again with the better half. Cassie explained it, or confirmed exactly what you say above. Our top is too low and our canvas almost sits flush with the van. And its an ingress water path as its so flat, close that water is going over and under the aluminium. Look forward to seeing you line and fit out the internals. Thank you again. Great work, love the 'can do' attitude
@jossandell
@jossandell Жыл бұрын
@@andrewmadge I see what you mean. It might be a bit different to ours then but hopefully you can sort out the water coming in. Thanks heaps mate! We’ve got more episodes coming. As of this current date, our van is actually complete and we’re leaving tomorrow on our lap of Australia in it. We’ve just been so busy getting to this point that I haven’t edited up the next few episodes but I’ll be doing that on the road and hopefully releasing a new episode of the build weekly/fortnightly 🙂

Hi there, I’m pretty sure that tassie oak trim was 20x20 but I will go and measure it to be sure. And for the roof are you talking about the pine lining boards? If so than yes they were from Bunnings 👍

Yes, the timber under the VJ panel do you know the width of that timber? 140 x 12mm ?
@jossandell

@@Tigerlillyxo12 oh around the pop top collar? For that I used meranti timber from a local timber shop and used the original measurements. I can’t quite remember them off the top of my head, I have a feeling it was around 15mm x 95mm? Again I’ll measure that again for you along with the tassie oak today 🙂
