I'm 51 and I learned to drive stick back in 1990 (I think). Anyway, it was a '68 Beetle. I knew the concept behind manual transmissions and how and what they do, but it was the muscle memory and actions that I hadn't had down yet. So what I did was took almost a whole day to just drive around the back streets of my little town (pop 1200). And by the end of the day, I was competent with a manual. Just gotta get out there and do it until it feels like 2nd nature. And you've probably heard this WAY too much from us genXer's, but it's just like riding a bike! 😁 Speaking of "feel," you're right. Every car feels different. And every car has its own "soul." I've had a '75 LTD, a '67 and '76 Impala, an 86 Toyota pickup, and several newer cars along the way. Each one just has a driving feel that is unique even if similar to others. Craziest thing I ever noticed was that in the Gran Turismo 3 game series, my real-life Toyota pickup handled a little bit like one of the TVR cars on the game, albeit with MUCH less power lol. But it has a certain weight shift that would happen around tight corners that would go from slight understeer to slight oversteer, and although it wasn't crazy or unpredictable, you could definitely feel it happening. I've never driven a TVR in real life (and the game might not be 100% representative of the car's handling), but it was so similar that I noticed immediately.

Thanks for watching the episode and taking the time to reply. Your suggestion is spot on Jon although after receiving my initial instruction, I had to wait till my parents went out to drive the car as I was only 12 years old at the time. It took some time to figure out how to let the clutch out without stalling or bucking the car. Figuring out the gear shifts came next. Figuring all of this out was just a wonderful time in my life!

Love this episode, Steve. I now realize my Austin Healey doesn't have a name. I'll ask my daughters to name her.

Thanks for the positive feedback Tom! This episode has more than twice the views than any other episode at this stage of viewership so it is resonating with people. Austin Healeys are such beautiful cars. My graduate school advisor had one that I use to drool over every time I saw him in it. My daughter has always named her cars (Pearl and Dash) and we always use those names when we discuss them. I find that it actually brings them to life. I am sure that you and your daughter will have fun going through that process. Let me know what name that you pick!

Hey Steve, I'm sooooo glad Mags is going to a family member. And not just any family member, your daughter Sarah. She is brilliant I tell ya, just brilliant! (in my not so good, boisterous British accent). But Steve, you will always be the Overseer of Maggie to keep her safe and in excellent running condition. You're the one for that job Mechanic Steve. I don't care either way if u want to continue with the characters or not, I'm still gonna watch. Well, hello from the south shore of Long Island, NY, and a fellow '72 MGB owner. Have a great week.

Thanks Anthony. As my daughter so astutely pointed out, people like us take pride in our cars and keep them in great shape. No one will repair things on our cars like we will as owners. Thanks for your opinion on the characters. The score presently is 3 (keep) 1 (ditch) and 2 (either way is good). I will compile the results over a month and see how things shake out. Might I ask you for another opinion? Do you think that I should ditch the music entirely, keep it at the beginning & end or leave it as is? Over the course of the last year, two people have said that they don't like to or can't watch the videos because of it.

@@MaggiesMakeover72 Hey Steve, wow ur like the lightning-speed responder!! Thanks. I just got back from a local drive in the MGB and a further drive in the '69 Mach 1. These things hv to be driven, as you know. To answer your question, as much as I'm a lover of music, it can be a little distracting when you're explaining technical things. At the beginning or end it's all good. I mean ultimately it's your channel and you can do what you want. I suppose audio can be muted and we can read the closed captions, but it's nicer to hear you Steve, as you have a nice, accurate way of explaining things. I'm an engineer too, but of the electrical kind, but I don't speak as clearly as you, but not too bad. People think I'm a mechanical engineer since I'm always tinkering with cars. Of course a mechanical engineer is a far cry from a tinkerer. I'm sure ur always getting asked to fix things, since ur secret's out about being a mechanical engineer. I get asked to fix anything and everything electrical too - lol. Have a good week Steve!

Thanks for the feedback on the music Anthony. As a result, I will try it just at the beginning and end of the episodes and see what the response is to that. I believe that it will cut down on the "ditch the music" comments that I sometimes get. I appreciate your know comments on my ability to explain things to people. Although I was formally trained as an engineer and worked in that discipline for the first 11 years of my career, the 30+ years I spent in software sales probably taught me how to explain things to people in a concise way. I remember my electrical engineering classes that I took as part of my mechanical engineering program. It always seemed like voodoo to me! With that said, I hope that I have enough electrical ability to get through troubleshooting and fixing any of Maggies electrical problems that will undoubtedly come up. I LOVE fixing things as they are problems that involve learning, rational thought and applying solutions.....all things that Engineers love to do!

@@MaggiesMakeover72 Hey Steve, it's your slightly younger electrical engineer not retired yet counterpart - lol. So that explains your well-crafted speaking abilities. Awesome! Thanks for sharing that. As far as any electrical issues with Maggie, once she's renewed, I don't think I've seen a more simpler electrical schematic for a car, than with a MGB. I think you will be quite fine with that. Most of the time you just need a digital multimeter. Knowing Ohm's law helps in droves: Volts = Current x Resistance or V=IR. This helps an awful lot. Jeesh, my '91 Jeep Cherokee Laredo 2 door had a schematic in my Chilton's manual that was more than a half inch thick in pages !!!! Maybe more !! What happened to the engineering statement KIS? I know you know what this means but for others I'll define it: "Keep It Simple" There is also the same acronym but with an extra "S". We won't go there.

@@anthonyhfe6450 thank you for your compliment! Gld to hear that you believe the electrical schematics of an MGB is "simple". My racing teammate (the guy in the Engine Pull episode) has been hounding me to power Maggie up to see what works and what doesn't before I strip her down and start the bodywork portion. I was really lucky in that the mice nest was on the drivers side fender and not the passenger where the engine bay loom originates from. Hopefully when I do, only minor issues will be seen that can easily be fixed.

Owned my MGB since 1984, she has seen people, life events come and go, even now every drive seems special, years roll away and you feel young again. Theres the feeling when you see the tiny B next to a huge SUV. I dont believe older MGS have a soul but they are very close to one

A '69 B was my first car. I drove it through College. I was able to keep it running, but not in good shape. It was a rust heap when I gave it away to someone I hoped woudl restore it. But instead he abanadonded it, and I wasn't in a place to take it back before it got scrapped. But I still dream of finding that it evaded the scrapper, so I find and restore it. Ah Dreams.

Never say never Kirk.......try to carve out some time to devote to the search as you just never know what might turn up. If your original MGB evades you, go buy a used one. Lots of them out there in both pre-restored and restored shape at very reasonable prices. Let your mind dream and then take the many steps to get there. You will be glad that you did!

The B is a great car to learn to drive manual. I "knew how" to drive a stick but I didn't really understand it until my dad bought his '74 back from my uncle and I got some seat time in it, once I got in and tried to drive it everything clicked in my head in spite of the worn clutch and bad synchro.

@@MaggiesMakeover72 I'll inherit my dads car, it already lives in my garage since his garage has other projects underway. I keep it maintained and get it out to stretch its legs on weekends. As a side note, keep a spare ignition switch on hand, I've gone through a couple in the last decade, they tend to split down the middle and then the car won't start. Also, if you aren't already planning to, put a battery cutoff switch in to keep the oh so reliable lucas wiring deenergized while not in use.

@@samb756 that's awesome! There is nothing like driving a car that you have a history with. You will think of him later on in life ever time you turn that ignition switch. Thanks for the pointers. I always thought that the kill switches were so people wouldn't steal the car. Good call on isolating the battery from the rest of the car while not in use due to wiring issues.

I agree, the 4-speed B is a good, easy car to learn on, but not with a very costly rebuilt tranny that's going into Mags, as you know there will be some bucking !! I taught my sons on my '77 TR7 which has the Rover 5-speed. It just so happened that's how the timing worked out. They got licenses, Dad has a TR7 and no other manual vehicles at that time. There was some bucking but they learned fast. Could you ever forgive me TR7???
