Episode 9 | The Baptist's Head | Saint John the Baptist: From Birth to Beheading

Күн бұрынThe representation of John the Baptist's life doesn't end with his martyrdom. Independent images of his severed head are a particular focus of devotion and became popular both as paintings and as sculpted objects made for the home - a tradition that continues to the present day.
In this episode art historian Jennifer Sliwka and theologian Ben Quash look at the National Gallery's masterpiece by Caravaggio, 'Salome receives the Head of John the Baptist', 1607-10 and pay a visit to a private collector who keeps a polychrome sculpted head of the Baptist by Brazilian-born artist Ana Maria Pacheco in his sitting room.
'John the Baptist: From Birth to Beheading' is a series of 10 films sharing the highlights of the collaborative MA course taught by Dr Jennifer Sliwka, Howard and Roberta Ahmanson Fellow in Art and Religion at the National Gallery and Professor Ben Quash, Director of the Centre for Arts and the Sacred, King's College London.

I would have appreciated it if Dr Quash were to have explained what "truth" John "spoke to power" (9:28). I am no theologian but from what I can discover from reading Wikipedia, John was executed to fulfill a promise made by Herod Antipas to Salome, the daughter of Herodias (daughter by an earlier marriage, I think). Herodias, the second wife of Herod Antipas, was offended by John's objection that that marriage as unlawful, and so Herodias, anxious to silence John, induced Salome to ask for John's head as a reward for an impressive after dinner entertainment. In short, this was a family drama, and the moral of the story is that one should be careful about using the word "anything."

It could be from self-reflection. Although the subject matter is not mainly about the painter. Caravaggio was in a state of deprivation after reaching fame and being on the run from committing a crime as bad as murder.

Hallo from Germany. Danke for arts. I need music too but I think in this time with epidemie / war / inflation and crazy migration we all need something else to let our spirit go to different places. Everything is politics/ news and the opposite of spiritual energy.

No one actually gave an answer lol, Herodias hated John the Baptist because at the time he advised Herod that it is unlawful for him to have Herodias as his wife bec Herodias was his brother, Phillip’s wife. Herodias had this grudge against him. So at a banquet/party Salome, Herodias’ daughter danced and entertained everyone so well and Herod promised her a wish granted up to half of his whole kingdom, Herodias told her to ask for John’s head on platter, Herod not wanting to be embarrassed in front of the people, and to live up to his word - ordered the beheading - there ya go
