I think we need to wait to hear the final specs before we are too critical however it is hard to think this is not a step backwards. Thousands of speed shops across the country are building these types of engines for street and weekend applications. Clearly the maintenance and bespoke add ons will be important. As long as the racing is more spectacular than the engines then all will be ok.

I disagree. Having more factory parts is an improvement in my view. One of the biggest criticisms of the category has been the move from near factory cars to custom built everything that has no resemblance to the car/manufacturer they are supposed to represent. Any move towards the factory is a good thing from where I'm sitting. Can't please all the people all the time I guess

@@dons1932 It does matter when a rod fails or piston disintegrates and destroys the whole unit. Let’s not forget this is Australia’s elite Motorsport category. If cost is your point why don’t we just stick a cage in a road going mustang and call it a race car. That would be far cheaper than a hand made space frame chassis. Where’s does it stop?

@@mortifiedpenquin It doesn't. That's the point. You cut costs where you can. I LOVE the engineering but this makes sense. Money doesn't flow through the sport like it used to (not NASCAR spec) so it's the only way. The chassis' are cheap. Way cheaper than a road car. Again it's the labour that's expensive.

@@dons1932 incorrect, the handmade chassis with carbon fibre bodywork along with all the hand fabricated tanks, brackets fixings ect, custom harness and expensive motec electronics are not cheap and plenty of room to cut those costs. Didn't you notice the dry sump pans? That's 6 - 14,000 bucks worth of billet design and machining there. On 1 item. The balancer another 1000 bucks. The belt drives. Things ADD UP. Fast. Engines aren't as simple as they look. You've countless pieces that add together plus labour and electronics. All the MoTeC stuff and AutoSport connectors on the engine would be 20 - 35K alone. Moreover, an average joe engine shop big power donk wouldn't last for 1000kms living at 7500 driven at WOT either. The camshafts and heads are still highly strung to make these things accelerate out of corners. Again. Ain't as simple as it looks, sounds or seems.
@James-zj3ud

@@James-zj3ud And again, power where it counts. These things are measured in 0 - 100, 100 - 200 and 200 - 300kph. Being able to build an engine that can accelerate in every gear, at many rev ranges, hard, is a skill completely dissimilar to being able to build an engine that ONLY makes peak power. For something like drag, dyno or torching tyres. Have you seen the flywheels in these things? They are 2kg. TWO FREAKING KILOGRAMS. Paper thin. They don't even run rear main seals - the cranks seal on the sump pan and leaks until the engine is started and the oil pump pulls vacuum. They even machine the blocks externally and internally to remove kilograms of weight at a time. That's the level of detail they are at to get every last little advantage they can get.

No one seems to be talking about the serious size & weight disadvantage that the Ford engines will carry. 'Oh we had to set the Coyote at 5.4L vs the 5.7L LS for parity'. Did that parity adjustment take into account the weight of four camshafts vs one, the heads & covers that are twice the size, & the fact that all that weight sits up high on top of the engine making for a less than optimal C.O.G.? In any case, no Mustang carries a 5.4L & no Camaro a 5.7. Yet you want to tell us they are more relevant? 🤦‍♂️

They were just as stressed. All three engines had to be 5.0L, rev to 7500RPM, and make the same amount of power and torque at the same point in the rev range as the Pushrod Ford and Holden counterparts. 7500RPM is really high for a 5.0L Pushrod V8, but is quite normal for a Quad Cam V8. That brought on difficulties with making the right amount of power in a constrained rev range. That’s why those three manufacturers didn’t quite have the same success as the already developed and proven engines. That’s why these new engines should save money, bridge the gap between road and race car, and encourage new R&D that the category hasn’t seen for a few years.

Utter stupidity! Pushrod vs DOHC, if there is parity in HP/Tourque, there are Zero benefits to running a DOHC setup. All that happens is that you raise the centre of gravity of the racecar. Anything running that DOHC motor will have a handling deficit to the cars running pushrods.

@@timjohnun4297 The only way I think it could possibly work, for parity would be to make them ballast the bonnet. The coyote is just physically bigger, taller and wider. I just think that these vids aren't nearly enough for the fans who care about gen3 supercars. (More for casuals, not that casuals don't deserve to know.) You know, as well as I do that there is some *serious* BOP work to be done, and this seems like a needless difference (LT/Coyote). There's not a single Manufacturer team in the series, and they're not coming back. They should simplify things (to bring costs down). @@kylehall1220 your going to need to put a link to that part because I'm sure it doesn't exist. This isn't the same 5.4L that lived in the BA through FG Falcon, or Cobra R Mustang or Ford GT. They have a taller deck height to accommodate the long stroke needed to get their displacement of 5.4L. The Coyote is based off the 4.6L deck which is shorter by around 2 inches. Why make them equal, this is going to be like nascar....... i dont like it, next the body shape needs to be within spec, then its going to be tyres jada jada jada and the only difference will be the fibreglass body and its stickers. Not happy jan. The engines should be "go for it boys....."

Well that is a useless piece of information, your not actually telling us anything new. I’m afraid that Supercars are dumbing you down Larko.

Guys, I have watched for a while now and can't stand it anymore. I implore you to listen to the fans, they are the only reason Supercars exist. I hear words consistently used like "market relevance" and "Parity" which fans quite frankly have had a gut full previously. In regards to market relevance, the current V8 Supercar is a space frame chassis with a current body skin over it...IE Nascar. It has no relevance to a modern day road car therefore the horse has bolted regards this point so why now push for a change to engine package on this platform. With parity, the fans will love this all over again and would have thought Supercars had learned a lesson. Anyone with a small amount of racing knowledge knows the 5.4 Coyote will have a completely different power curve (power delivery) compared to the GM product. We all know that horsepower is secondary to how the power is delivered and its impact on tires IE. Power to the road. Larko, I have the utmost respect for you and your are an engineer at heart...I cannot for the life of me understand why Supercars are tying to stifle Aussie engineering and force feed this change to the fans. As a fan for 50 years all I want is brilliant engineering, best drivers exploiting the limits of the engineering. Why not set the overall parameters for the category and then set a "salary cap" per car. Let the teams develop and engineer the cars as this is what they do best. Suggest having a long talk with Larry Perkins as he has understood what fans want for years. Lastly, from what I have seen so far, the sound from the Gen 3 V8 is flat and drone like. This will drive fans away in droves and needs to be addressed. Just look at F1 and what they went through with the sound of the new generation turbo engines. Please, please learn from others mistakes. I am very fearful that Supercars are at a point of no return and it will be shameful to have such a world renowned, successful product lost through bureaucratic arrogance. If fans walk away, do you think wold class drivers we currently have will stay in the category ?. I want to "believe" but am concerned this maybe my last year supporting Supercars after 50 years.

@@tonybranson5809 Not at all. Less aero and less downforce is great! It means more wheel work and less disadvantage when following. That means closer racing and more driver difference than set up difference. And they have told us about rev limits, they have said the limit they are working on is whatever limits the cars to a maximum of 300 down Conrod. Less downforce means less power required to go just as fast.

The coyote engine is a far superior engine what GM are using it to see how and when the bitching starts a bit paranoid and has GM fixed it’s a big issue with this engine

Should have done a single engine in a pool, officials can swap your engine out at any time, parity and cost savings done better than this nonsense.
