Of all of the philosophies we've studied, Pragmatism might be the most practically beneficial. Why? This video explains why! (Part 1 of 2)

don't mind me, just taking notes. What beliefs are working based on your experience. Test the beliefs: if it's working then it's a good belief. Fallibilism - our beliefs might be wrong.

Thank you, very helpful! I didn't quite get the difference with relativism though. Is it the fact that in relativism, there is no absolute truth? vs. pragmatism, where truth is what works best ? What if two theories have similar results if you confront them in an experiment ? Do Pragmatists say that 2 completely opposed theories are true until one is proven better? Or do they just refrain from making the assumption that any of them is true ?

:) correct on relativism and pragmatism - pragmatists construct truth through experiments : so, 2 theories are possibly, but not yet true ... and you would suspect also that truth will work relatively the same for different people doing similar things

Thank you! How is pragmatic epistemology different from constructivism? I seem to confuse between the two.

Excellent question! I would need to investigate further -- but they are quite similar : constructivists (in education at least) use a kind of pragmatic epistemology where we care about what works -- and emphasize, however, that we are always constructing our worlds in multiple ways. Pragmatists, I would generalize, have more of a scientific method to arriving at pragmatic truths that have the possibility of being shared and transferred. Not sure if that helps! I'll need to dig a bit on this one when I come back around to this material :)

Maybe I’m stupid for ask this question..but..If I want to ask are people good, don’t I have to have some understanding of good first? And if get an understanding of good that *works for* the question are people good, then all is well. But if other people come to a different conclusion with a different understanding of good, and if I have a mass variety of different understandings of good that work for different experiments then does the word good have any value with it?

cool question, if I get it ... I'm not sure that our understandings of "good" are all that good :) one of the reasons I like pragmatism as a framework : we can work towards a more desirable state of affairs for all concerned, with the acknoweldgement that we might not know what that is right now ! :)

Fallibalism / infallibility. -------- falsifiable / unfalsifiable. But if your goal is to feel good because your knowledge is infallible, what works for you may be superstition.

... good point for sure -- so perhaps truth-seeking needs to be part of the equation as well ... .. but if it's harmless to believe in fairies, and that works for me (and it's impossible to disprove them, they exist on another dimension... then ... ? ) :)

@@WisdomWorkshop Believing in fairies and believing in science are not arrived at with the same cognitive orientation. One orientation, it seems to me, is more suited to understanding reality than the other. What are the various cognitive orientations? How does one come about one's cognitive orientation?
