Sennheiser has released a successor (or two) to the legendary MKH-416 shotgun microphone. Today we're taking a crack at the Sennheiser MKH-8060 short shotgun microphone for up-close dialog in the studio as I show here. Thanks for watching my Sennheiser MKH-8060 review and HUGE thanks to Pablo for the loan!
As always, unless stated otherwise the audio in these samples is completely un-edited. Simply normalized audio levels.

There is a noticeable difference. The 416 has a more obvious presence which is why the 8060, despite sounding very good, won't catch on for voice over in the same way the 416 has. Just as you said, the wider pickup pattern means that it picks up more of the room and you voice sounds slightly more distance. It'd be nice to hear these compared in a more treated space as these differences will become more obvious, even more so after compression.

Wow people can actually tell a difference? They're both practically the same mic with different pickup patterns. Both amazing and would complement each other for different uses

The most optimal stand for doing talking head stuff with a shotgun microphone would be with the microphone on a boom pole, then the boom pole attached to a C stand with a boom pole cradle attached to the grip head of the arm of the C stand. This has the advantage of being able to float over the subjects head very easily and out of frame. You can also weight the C stand down with a sand bag to ensure it won't be going anywhere. That set up would be good for you since you do a lot of talking head stuff in front of the camera with minimal movement.
@EposVox

My normal mic stand already does this without taking up the floor space that a normal C-Stand would lol
@augustcelineiii946

@@EposVox I guess it's true that the set up I described is most prized for it's rugged portability and consistency when doing field work. That's why C stands are considered a must have in field and studio work because they can be collapsed easily and they can take a beating. So really a C stand may take up some room, but it could easily be collapsed and fit into the space of a smaller gap space in your apartment when not in use. If you have an in studio solution that works for you then that's that. No problem. I just heard you complain in the video about your mic stand, and I thought to myself very little people ever complain about the consistency the aforementioned set up provides. 😊 It's a standard set up for a lot of people that do talking head videos, but there's nothing wrong with exploring other options.

yeah well in my small apartment between my massive main light stand and my existing c-stand (and camera tripod and mic stand) I'm already tripping over stuff too much. And this might have been shot before I bought a new stand. Either way the main problem was balancing the adapter to put both mics on at once, it kept unscrewing haha
@augustcelineiii946
@augustcelineiii946 5 жыл бұрын
@@EposVox Oh that's not such a big problem after all. Lol Especially since on a day to day basis you probably won't be rigging two mics to do a comparison very often. Anyways, I've seen your apartment in several videos. I can believe you would be tripping over stuff! I think all the stuff you have is cool though. 😊 You just have a lot of it.

Yeah a C Stand gives you so much flexibility in how you can place the mic for locked off shoots. My C Stand is probably one of my best ever investments I made.

One thing I hate about the 8060, is that friggin' clip that takes the skin off. I feel like that would be better suited for the more robust 416. It's like the two need to swap clips.

I typically don’t recommend shotgun microphones inside small interiors. They tend to pick up the slap back in rooms because of their distance sensitivity and they are absolutely awful if you have a controller that has stick clacks. I find lavs a better choice for those who need to move around on stream like VR or wii games. Otherwise stick to the studio mics with popper stoppers.

If you're doing stand-up VO in a sound treated environment, a shotgun/dialog mic will sound exponentially better every single time. I love my Sennheiser lav kit (cost as much as these mics!) but my 416 blows it away in every aspect. Obviously I'd never recommend it for at-desk stuff, but for stand-up set production, unless you have a super reverb-y room, definitely.

yes agree, for indoor a MKH 8050 would be a better choice, or a cardoid such as Sennheiser MKH 8040, if you have not prepared the space with lots of damping ;) see kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iL-Hd5iorpymaZ8.html

Glad you're giving some love to the 8060! (there was also the MKH60 between the 416 and 8060, which is one I own myself. Although I usually prefer my Sanken CS3e) Is kinda strange how people keep on buying the 416 brand new, when there are so many newer better ones out on the market now in 2019. A bit like how people keep on repeating recommending the Sennheiser G3.... sigh

To be fair, mics don't really age poorly. RE20 has been the standard for decades, haha. Analog lasts way longer.
@SoundSpeeding
@SoundSpeeding 5 жыл бұрын
EposVox indeed mics don’t age as fast as say camera bodies do, which go out of fashion so fast! A better analogy would be to say mics are like lenses! Which also stay relevant and interesting for a very very long time. So a lens of similar vintage to a 416 would be a Nikon 50mm f/2 Pre-AI lenses. Which is a pretty cool lens, I own one myself! But should anyone pay full price brand new retail for such a lens? Oh hell no, that would be bonkers! I only picked up the lens because it is also such a bargain on eBay (or KEH in my case). If you’re not picking it up secondhand for a song, then I reckon you should be considering a different lens to get better bang for your buck. I feel similarly about the 416
