This video demonstrates the capabilities out-of-the-box of the Epson 5050UB and the BenQHT5550. Both are fantastic "4K" HDR projectors and the bottom line is that buyers are going to really enjoy each of them with their own unique strengths. My personal bottom line is that for sports and gaming I prefer the Epson and for 4K HDR and SDR movies I prefer the BenQ. But you can't go wrong with either!
I have found settings that make both projectors look even better! In the video I refer to the Epson 5050UB as having plenty of pop and brightness, but a bit oversaturated in it's factory picture modes. Fellow AVSForum member, Alaric, has posted these fantastic settings for the Epson 5050UB that really help to create an even more natural picture quality. Here is the link to his Google sheet: docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...
Another AVSForum member, Kraine, is the editor for PassionHomeCinema over in France. He also shared his settings for the HT5550 that really helped to find the best balance of brightness, color, and contrast. In Color Temperature menu: Red gain: 101, Green gain: 99, Blue gain: 103, Red offset: 246, Green offset: 256, Blue offset 265, Brightness 45, Contrast: 55

Awesome Video. So glad I found it. I've been wanting a real life close up representation of Epson's pixel shift technology. The screen door effect is apparent, but as my screen is only 120", it will not be so much so for me. Regarding the color of the two, the BenQ I believe has a more accurate representation of color. The Epson like you said is saturated, though that is what I prefer. As I like a more poppy picture with high color levels, it just increases the overall wow factor and goes well with such a huge screen. Awesome video. 👍

Really loved this video! Great job man! Bummed to learn that the Epson doesn’t auto switch into HDR settings. Might be a deal breaker for me. I’m also hoping to fill a 160” diag 16x9 screen so I’m glad to hear these both can do that well, even with some ambient light. Wish the BenQ had motorized lens with memories for my CIH setup. You only need to press 2 buttons and you've got HDR mode... certainly shouldn't be a deal breaker.. The first level HDR setting is the best one imho. But you'll need to obviously turn your colour saturation, brightness and contrast way down to compensate. The Benq wont be bright enough for a 160 inch screen once the lamp dims. The Epson has far more lumens.

I recently picked up a 5040UB on sale seeing as the HT5550 would not work for my screen size/distance. I will say that HDR was underwhelming before I got my hands on some tweaks done by Oledurt and Dave Harper. They made a SIGNIFICANT improvement. I feel like the 5050UB may need the same tweaks/calibration to really help it seeing as the BenQ has what seems to be really good auto tone mapping. Thanks for the review though Scotty this was a great watch.

Hey man. great video. To be a better comparison i would say have the same projectors on the same plane or elevation. Angle of incidence is a factor when dealing with an A/B comparison. I love my epson and I plan on buying the 5050. Inherently, DLP will have a more color saturation. 3 chip LCD shines in every other aspect of projector performance. I did something similar with optoma and epson. BenQ does an amazing job at bringing 4K HDR to the public at a lower cost than the competitors. if people are budget conscious the benQ is a great choice. Great video. You nailed all the key points. very nice review, thanks for all of the hard work that was surely involved! looking at the comparison i see the epson as the clear winner, pretty much across the board... in fact i recently returned a benq lk953st 4k hdr because it looked a lot like what i'm seeing from the ht5550 in your vid.... i'm not a deep black snob, infact i'm willing to sacrifice some black for brightness, but i just couldn't deal with the lk953st's poor black performance, nor the manual lens adjustment... also, i wasn't a big fan of benq's hdr implementation, and the fact that you set it and leave, without the ability to do much of anything once it's on (it disables a lot of image control settings) was a deal breaker as well.

I have the TW9300 (5040UB), and in my opinion there is no way you can accurately compare the HDR image if using the Epson in Natural mode. The filter needs to be engaged, using either Cinema or Digital Cinema modes - especially as it was stated that the BenQ automatically adjusts its mode. If the HDR image was found to be almost comparable in this review, it leads me to think the Epson would have surpassed the BenQ if used correctly. Also, the filter is the only way to achieve rec BT.2020 (for HDR), where this Epson rates at 100% accuracy. So all of the comments about over-saturation of colour would have been void if only the filter was used. I know I'm sounding over-critical here, but in actual fact I appreciate the review.

Do you change the settings in the middle of a movie / game? Or do you only change setting switching to a different movie / game? I like dark blacks but do not like crushed blacks. When I have viewed other Epson UB projectors in person, lost shadow detail for lots of inky black in a scene always bugged me. Thanks Scott, I really appreciate the side-by-side. When you say that it's on the Nvidia Shield, so it's not in HDR is that because the shield cannot output HDR? I'm also noticing that on the BenQ it seems to have a yellow / green tint on the whites of the clouds. I was never able to achieve good white balance on my w1070. The whites on the HT 5550 also looks a little dingy to me . What do you think as an in-person vs. recorded comparison?

Lenny Gee The shield TV can certainly output HDR. It is just that the KZfaq app does not output HDR. It is weird since KZfaq Doesn’t do HDR on the Premier android TV device. BHT 5550 doesn’t produce dingy whites to Mayeye. I also reviewed the TK 800 and that has a clear slice on the color wheel. That produces very bright pure white light. The HT 5550 is not as white as that but I have never had the thought come to my mind that the whites are not white. If that makes sense.

Thank you for this video comparison..very helpful. I see that you preferred the Epson 5050 for viewing sports. My question is...do you think a dedicated 1080P projector would display sports better since its broadcast in 1080 or do you feel the Epson 5050 holds up just as well?

Just picked up a 5050ub 🤣 I actually went with it because my sources are mostly not going to be in hdr or 4k. I use my projector in my living room for daily sports streaming from roku which is usually 720p on roku apps (I know gasp) the 5050ub is amazing at rendering lower quality stuff. Of course, if I had an htpc with full 4k content and a cable box pushing 4k regularly I would probably go with the BenQ. I'll probably upgrade in 2-3 years so we'll see what around $3k then! Remember folks it's easy to get caught up in specs, but it really comes down to the quality of the source! Like you don't need the most expensive speakers if you're watching 2.0 audio on compressed KZfaq videos 😂

Am I right in thinking Benq doesn't have powered zoom/focus etc? Given the current range of aspect ratios starting to appear (2:1 etc) and for those of us who don't like black bars this seems essential? Especially if the projector is ceiling mounted. A deal breaker for me.

Could you mirror the image of one projector next time? That would help give a real side-by-side comparison.

Benq colours look more realistic in this comparision. I love Benq projectors, but I'm sensible to rainbow effect ;(... I bought a Benq and returned it. I got an equivalent Epson projector which I like, but Benq colours are just better imo.

Hi. If you watch the Thor beginning at 16 minutes into your video you see the screen pan up and the Epson image stutters while the Benp is smooth. I'm surprised more people don't mention that issue with Epson projectors

Great review! But i'm not sure if comparing both right out the box justifies the image quality in terms of color etc. I think that you can only compare if both are ISF calibrated (not in factory) but in your own cinema room. I can get the 5050UB (or TW9400 in Europe) for 2400$. That looks like a good deal?

Thank you for this valuable demonstration. Truly helpful. So the Epson does not do shifting which leads to 8 mil. pixels ..instead its more like a 1440p? Also.. that low input lag maintains to 4k@60Hz, or just 1080p? Honestly, is pretty hard to decide between these.. but that low input lag on Epson is freaking amazing...I mean you can play shooters (not on a super competitive level) but still...is super close to a reasonable 20 ms... It also has a better contrast ratio. When it comes to black levels... I guess it depends on your screen as well, so... might just grab the Benq and save for a better screen tbh. (unless you are gaming.

The only reason I kept the Epson is because of the input lag. If I didn't game, then I would have kept the HT5550 all the way.

Thanks for doing this! I had an Epson 5040 that I sent back because of the "screen door effect." It's the first thing I noticed when firing up the Apple TV 4K menu - pixelated icons. If I'm getting into 4K, I wan't just a smooth, immersive image, and DLP does that for me. Currently I have the BenQ8050, which is lovely, but has poor black levels. I think the HT3550 will fit my 100" screen really well, but I'm curious if you'd say there is an improvement in contrast/black level with the 5550 over the smaller guy? Thanks again, great comparison!

Thanks for this! I'd really like to know how 3D performs, especially if the brightness of the Epson makes a big difference. I currently have an Epson 3100 rated at 2600 lumens (same as 5050ub) and projecting 110 inches, but the 3D is too dark to enjoy in movies with very dark scenes. Does that problem exist with either of these projectors?

Unfortunately I don't have the correct glasses for 3D on the Epson. 3D is quite nice on the BenQ though.

I feel like I’m in the twilight zone watching this. How can he in good faith say the BenQ is comparable to the Epson. I feel the Epson is the only choice. It was really funny when he brought up text to compare and when he panned over to the Epson he got closer to the screen which would clearly show more pixels the closer you get to it. Do yourself a favor, if you’re deciding between an Epson and a price comparable projector, just get the Epson. Trust me.

Man this is tough. I’ll probably use it about evenly split between movies/sports/gaming. My gut says get the Epson but $500 and more sharpness are hard to pass up. I also like things simple and the epson picture settings seem like a pain.

Scott could you please advise me on what projector to get (1st ever) I obviously don’t want to spend a couple of thousand being my 1st ever one. I wanted to set one up in my bedroom 3m from the wall hanging on the ceiling is my thoughts. Looking for a good native 1080P with good contrast. Could you name a couple for me please ?? And thank you!!

For the novices, dlp has way better focus and colour, whereas lcd / lcos / sxrd has better black level...that's the way it is, and the way it will always be...my choice has always been dlp, and always will be...i much prefer a sharp picture with accurate colour...😊
