My first projector and screen for our family room was an Epson 8340 with an Elite Screens Cinegrey 110" screen. About 24 months ago we upgraded to an Epson 5020UB and it was a big improvement. We are just beginning to look to upgrade from the 5020UB and are impressed with the 5040UB but, have decided to wait at least a year or two as the availability of 4K material is so very limited. And that is an understatement. That and the 5040UB is a first gen attempt. We know that there will be improvements to this and as the availability of 4K material increases Epson will make further improvements going forward. Our biggest dilemma is the next screen we will buy. The Elite Screen Cinegrey we have currently has a very wide viewing angle which is key to our layout in our Family Room. With Family Rooms you do not have total light control. Especially in open concept modern homes. With the newer ALS screens the viewing angles are so much narrower. This is a detriment and dilemma to our Family Room and I suspect to most Family Rooms. Is there a screen that has the light limiting advantages of ALS and the wider viewing angle of a Cinegrey screen out there for Family Rooms where there are people who will be watching sports and movies off to the side of the projector screen in less than total light control environments?

Hi Al8 I really don’t find the time to review screens anymore. I have a motorized SI Slate in my living room. It definitely rolls off to the side more than, say my 1.3 gain Studiotek 130, I’d say roll-off is reasonable until you are beyond 45% off angle, but I say that in a room with light present. Of course that’s likely to be your situation as well. I trust you’ve already talked to Elite. Check out the others. Most should publish info regarding how much they do roll off. -art

Perhaps you can get your hands on an Benq 8050 native 4k HDR and put it head to head with the 5040 some time soon. Play some 4k HDR Bluray movies. :) Love your reviews. Does Epson have a native 4k HDR projector? :)

If you had to choose: 5040ub, Optoma CinemaX P1, LG HU810P? I can get the 5040ub for about half the price of the Optoma and 1/4th of the LG. Just trying to decide if the contrast /age of the Epson is as comparable as the others.

Grab the epson if you want a long throw beamer. Grab something else if you want short throw. It isn't apples to apples. Kings of short throw can do 500 nits. Kings of long throw in the same price ranges can barely top 250. Short throw projectors and lifestyle projectors aren't generally tuned for dark room theater viewing, but non-ideal spaces where brightness and image viewability In light matters more.

Could you confirm that this projector can project in different ratios like 16:9 vs. 2:35:1. Sounds like per your comment that this supports widescreen that it's possible but I want to be sure before I purchase.
@projectorreviews
@projectorreviews 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Jarrett, yes the projector is native 16:9. It uses Lens Memory to support wide screens such as 2.35:1, 2.37:1, 2.40:1 etc. Basically if you go with a wide screen, when your content in cinemascope wide, you zoom so that the movie fills your screen completely. When you put on 16:9 content on that widescreen, you’ll be rezooming and adjusting the lens shift to fill the screen vertically, but with letter boxing on left and right. And all of that is stored in memory so you just tap Mem 1 or Mem 2 on the remote for the correct aspect ratio of what you are watching. -art

8:10, why do the numbers look different with enhancement turned on? If it truly is the same frame...
@projectorreviews
@projectorreviews 7 жыл бұрын
I then took a series of images, each with different settings. Remember I can have pixel shifting on or off. If on, it processes data differently depending on the resolution - 4K will look different than 1080. (I have both Blu-ray, and Blu-ray UHD discs of Ender’s Game (and others) for just this purpose. Finally, Epson has settings they call Image Enhancement (from Off to 1 - 5). Each of those seems to adjust multiple different image processing aspects. So, for example, setting 2 might have less “sharpening” added than setting four, but may have the same amount of contrast enhancement, and have more or less of other enhancement tools, (including image noise reduction, etc.) I think of those options as a grab bag of things that make the image seem sharper, clearer, but it certainly isn’t as natural as having an inherently higher resolution (true 4k) projector. For that reason I commend the Epson’s on looking exceptionally sharp, but also note that when using all that processing the images tend to look a little hard (compared, to, for example, seeing the same image on a true 4K projector.) Hope that helps. In the old days, it was color controls, contrast, sharpness, brightness. Today, they’ve figured out all kinds of advanced processing algorithms, to, say, take good old 1080p, and make it seem as sharp as true 4K. -art

Does anyone know why this 5040UB seems to be in short supply. In Canada its a backorder with no arrival dates given ?

@projectorreviews 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Claude, sorry for the delay. Not sure why constrained in Canada - have you checked with more than one dealer? In the US to the best of my knowledge, they seem to be readily available. Epson Canada is part of Epson America, so the product starts out from the same place, same models. the 5040UB etc. are sold under different model names in the rest of the world outside of Epson America’s reach which I believe includes all of the Americas. -art

Hey Art. On your review you wrote that cinema mode on medium lamp only has 501 lumens in cinema mode which will put me only at 12 ftl, which isn't bright enough for me. However, here you state it is 900 lumens, which would work for me. What is the lumen output I can expect from this projector in cinema mode and bright cinema mode on med lamp power? Thanks.
@projectorreviews
@projectorreviews 7 жыл бұрын
Of course you will pick up almost 80 more lumens at wide angle on zoom - you said 12 feet back, but didn’t mention screen size. If 100, you’ll probably pick up about 50 lumens (not much help). Full power, will give you almost exactly 40% more brightness - which means your 12 ft/lamberts will be more like 17! That brings us to Bright Cinema - basically bright cinema is delivering almost 2.25X the brightness of Cinema… I use Bright Cinema for all my HDR watching. Give it a shot, calibrated, color won’t be quite as “on the money” across the spectrum, but “works for me.” PS not sure where your 900 lumen comment came from short of scanning the whole review - probably maximum for Cinema (wide angle full power?) Regarding the 900 - a couple of things have come into play. First, the 5040UB I’m using now is brighter than the pre-production 6040UB that was measured for the review, although the difference was under 10%. But also, that 6040UB was one of Eric’s first reviews. We’ve since standardized on one meter (we own four of them) that Eric is now using. Each varies, and Eric’s was by far the lowest it turns out. So the 900 should be a more updated, practical max for Cinema, full power, full wide angle, as opposed to something right around 800 lumens. -art

Hey Art, how do these compare with the latest Optomas?
@projectorreviews
@projectorreviews 5 жыл бұрын
Myself, I’ll stick with this for serious home theater. I’m looking forward to the noticeably more expensive Optoma P1 - their 4K UHD Ultra short throw projector (laser), but All of the Optoma 4K UHD’s we’ve reviewed to date have pretty “entry level” black levels, and the difference on really dark scenes isn’t going to be “night and day” it is more night vs dusk. If you want a serious alternative that is 4K UHD, my first choice would be the BenQ HT5550, which is $2499 list. Now if I can get back to finishing that review, it should be live tomorrow morning. And I will be doing an in-depth comparison with the newer Epson 5050UB that will publish in two weeks or so. Good luck in the hunt. -art

it was a big hassle to get my replacement bulb for the epson 5040ub, first they were out of stock so i called epson and they told me to try Compass micro a epson distributor and they also were out temporarily, when the backordered bulb came it required a signature and i was at work and had to go pick up my bulb 20 minutes away from my house after paying for shipping to my house, not a happy customer .

it's hard for me to imagine how the 5040ube can support 4:4:4 chroma in HDR but the 5040ub cannot. Is this correct? How reliable is the wireless version? I hadn't even considered it until I learned this feature
@projectorreviews
@projectorreviews 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Zimba, First, I’m not sure that it is true. If I recall, they should be able to do 4:4:4, only on 24 bit content, and perhaps only at 8 bit, which by definition - might be below the HDR standard (that’s more of a question for Ron, but he’s traveling). Perhaps more significantly, I really don’t think worrying about 4:4:4 compared to say, 4:2:0 or 4:2:2, is very critical to picture quality. Certainly dropping down from say 10 bit to 8 bit would have far more effect than going from 4:2:2 to 4:4:4 subsampling in terms of picture quality. I will check with Epson about the question of whether the UBE can do 4:4:4 at the same bit depth and frame work, where the UB cannot. It certainly is possible, but I’d be fairly surprised. And, if would, in theory be a selling point strength for the UBE over the UB, which I would think would be plus for Epson’s profits, but I don’t recall seeing anything promoting the superior sub-sampling. -art

Projector Reviews, Inc. Thanks so much for the reply. It's greatly appreciated. I'm actually curious as well if I can place the the 5040ub on a high shelf? My ceilings are 9ft and my shelf is 7ft. My friend who has a projector seems to think the 5040ub would need to be flipped upside down if the project is placed high up. I've seen a couple photos on the AVS forums of 5040ub owners who seem to be doing just that; placing the projector high up but right side up, but I'm unsure. The 5040ub will be my first projector.
@projectorreviews
@projectorreviews 6 жыл бұрын
Zimba! Thanks for an easy question this time. The Epson’s placement range doesn’t change, based on flipping it. It is designed for high shelf use right side up, just as well as ceiling mounting inverted. With a 100” screen (working from memory now), you can place the projector (right-side-up) as much as about 23” above the top of the screen surface of a 100” diagonal screen (or the same distance below the bottom of the screen (not your thing) for that matter. That height is measured from the center of the lens, of course. Our site lists the specific - max height on the hardware pages, but to answer all the questions, I pretty much have to work from memory. -art

The highest refresh rate I can get is 50hz. Is that the fastest this machine can do.?
@projectorreviews
@projectorreviews 6 жыл бұрын
Hi MegaHeels, I trust you are outside the US? Should be no problem getting 60hz, except in 4K HDR, where the Epson tops out at 24fps due to 10 ghz HDMI. The Epson runs at 120hz I believe when doing 3D (but that’s strictly 1080 not 4K). Basically the Epson’s main limitation is that HDMI speed, which makes the projector limited on 4K gaming. But as 4K HDR movies are typically 24hz, no problem there. Like any such device, if the source is fully compliant with the standards, it should recognize exactly what the display’s capabilities are, and send the highest quality content that the display can show. Unfortunately that doesn’t always happen, case in point the X-box One which has exasperated probably millions of owners, because it has limited the number of modes, so to speak, so that it won’t necessarily provide an Epson UB, or for that matter, dozens of models of LCDTVs with a usable signal. While we could hope for faster HDMI (next gen Epson?), other than gamers, if the source devices are working right, the 5040UB/6040UB should serve very nicely on 4K HDR. -art
