Stella is definitely my new teacher. She's calm, doesn't talk too fast, straight to the point. Most of these teachers on youtube are cool funny and all but sometimes you want to feel like you're in a class room where you trust that your teacher will help you get it. This is Stella for you. Whoever dislike her method and preferred commedy sessions is not serious about mastering the arts of music

This Sound Basics series is exactly what I needed. I've always fucked around with different settings and knobs when making my own music, looking up specific tutorials if I wanted to do a specific thing without necessarily understanding why it should be done. But I was too intimidated to actually sit down and learn the basics. This is completely reshaping how I'll approach mixing going forward. Thank you.

Stella you've made a perfect series for beginners. More please. Other instructors appear not to understand that beginners need even the most basic concepts and tools explained to them. They too often seem to assume the beginning pupil has some understanding of audio mixing that he or she does not yet possess.

Thank you Stella, much appreciated. I really like how you took to time to use specific instruments and adjust their EQ so we could hear the differences. Like Glorian below, I'd love to hear your take on compression. EQ may be the most basic tools for sculpting sound, but compression is one of the most difficult to master - at least for me. Cheers.

I would like to know a bit more on how to select the right frequencies to achieve the proverbial wall of sound...
@DavidCasper
@DavidCasper 5 жыл бұрын
The "Wall of Sound" is a studio technique that Phil Spector used to use, and it's not just merely a result of EQing frequencies. Spector achieved that sound first and foremost in the recording process. Whatever parts there were in a song, he wouldn't just have one instrument record that part - it would be a bunch of instruments. Each saxophone line, for example, would actually be played by multiple saxophones, usually with one sax turned up above the others to make it the prominent lead, but the other ones filled out the sound in the background. He'd also arrange a bunch of small filler parts for instruments to play - extra percussion lines, little background guitar parts, etc. - and record all of that. Then, he'd take all this stuff and EQ/volume level/compress the different parts to all fit together instead of sounding like a chaotic swirl of sound. The end result was songs that sounded huge, powerful, like a "wall of sound" hitting you because it was probably 40 or 50 different instrument parts hammering the melodies home, like an electric orchestra. Probably the best-known and most helpful example to listen to is "Born to Run" by Bruce Springsteen. Hope that helps!

Can’t believe no one mentioned his use of reverb yet. ‘In the 1960s, Spector usually worked at the Gold Star Studios in Los Angeles because of its exceptional echo chambers, essential to the Wall of Sound technique. Microphones in the recording studio captured the sound, which was then transmitted to an echo chamber-a basement room outfitted with speakers and microphones. The signal from the studio would be played through the speakers and would reverberate around the room, being picked up by the microphones. The echo-laden sound was then channeled back to the control room, where it was transferred to tape. The natural reverberation and echo from the hard walls of the room gave his productions their distinctive quality and resulted in a rich and complex sound when played on AM radio, with an impressive depth rarely heard in mono recordings.’

Enjoyed your video I’m a professional installer in Fort Lauderdale and I spent entirely too much time setting the E cues on speakers and obviously that’s tune to my ear. For general use to you have any EQ settings guides to start from obviously I try to do things so the music sounds good mostly what I’m installing as theater systems and the music is 30% of the use.Types of speakers don’t really matter because I use high-end equipment and I can use the crossovers to drive it to different speakers but just the EQ settings recommendations is awesome
