Sounds excellent! I get his tone - for the most part - with Guitar Rig 5. The 'Pro-Filter' rack effect is the key. Only once in a while do I put chorus on - and that depends on the song. I'm forever tinkering with it - as I see you are as well with yours! I think that's how Tom infects us! We become mad scientists like him!

What is crazy is that I noticed is tone only recently, when I had in mind to create his specific effect (compression at the trebles), and I kinda did that cutting EQ on the bridge pickup, and then giving back the trebles from the amp and post-EQ, and I was wondering if an EQ before and another after the amp, would make this exact effect. Then I noticed tom tone, and here I am having confirmation about what I was thinking ahah

The eq changes with volume level. That rig Turned up a lot , could have too much treble . Also use a phone app spectrum analyzer to ball park the eq from an isolated track. Sounds good.

Very nice. Every try a stereo setup? I use a Sustainer, 2 Rockman EQs, Stereo Chorus and Stereo Echo (nice head unit including a Midi Octopus put together by Rockman guru Jark) into 2 amps and 2 cabs. Gives a lot more depth to the chorus and the echo. Aphex Guitar Exciter I find sweetens everything nicely. Also tried experimenting with a Roland Space Echo for the Hyperspace pedal type stuff. Looking forward to trying your EQ settings.

Thank you for this. I went and bought the EQ-215 and just tried your settings. They sound pretty good and make sense. I found that in the pre-EQ the 6.3k, 10k and 16 k had to come down a bit or the tone was too harsh and shredding my ears. I also brought up the the 63H and 160H just a bit so I got more body. I suspect guitars vary in their individual tone and so these settings will have to vary. Any website you know of where Tom Sholtz's recommended EQ settings can be found on different songs and albums? I bet he had a variety of settings he relied on, right? Thanks for this. Super helpful!

So I compared this vid with the one you did a few years ago about setting up a rig for "Boston Tone On The Cheap". Can you substitute a Stereo Chorus for an X100 headphone amp on clean 2 like you described in that vid, or is a Stereo Chorus a must? P.S. I thought the reference to "Higher Power" at the end was cool. Don't hear that tune very much, even among Boston fans.

That would also work perfect for Def Leppard Hysteria tone as well

I’d like to know if Taylor Rhodes or anyone else that has commented on this video has ever tried approximating this town or one like it the same way that I’ve tried of late, using my Boss ME-80 and the Metal Zone for the distortion sound. That came to me when I was watching a review of the original Metal Zone pedal, in which the commentator said that it basically was an amp squeezed into a stompbox that‘s been misused and has a bad reputation. Which means that it can go so much farther than it’s gone today. Wink wink! What I do is use the Roland JC 120 amp model, the compressor with sustain at the max and attack at zero, the chorus generator with depth at the max and the rate between three and four and finally the Metal Zone simulator with the EQ (all four bands controlled by one dial) between noon and 1 o’clock and the gain between 0 & 1. It kind of comes out (for me at least) partway between the tones that Tom got during *Don’t Look Back* and *Third Stage.* I find one thing I can’t do successfully with those settings is scale back the volume the way Tom did during “We’re Ready” and “Cool the Engines”, however that isn’t a big loss. Better to use the foot switches to turn everything off and on.

why do you boost 10k and 16k... on both pre and post? Isnt that just hiss and noise? is there harmonic contentthat high? The EQ really adds clarity overall.

That sounds like the later Boston tone. I have never heard anyone nail the 1st album tone which to me had a bit more beef to the low mids.

i pulled the trigger and purchase a used Peavey EQ-215 15 dualo 15 track equalizer. Unfortulately I have the Stereo Chorus Delay (not the same as your rig) will that effect it substantially?
