I grew up across the street from the USET (The U.S. Equestrian Team) and down the street from The Myopia Hunt Club, so called because its name derived from several myopic (near-sighted, and, so, bespectacled) brothers who had already founded a Myopia Club in Winchester, Massachusetts, several years before. I don’t remember ever purchasing tickets, but my sisters and I would walk or drive over when there were matches and it was thrilling. We all rode - not just my family, but everyone in our town, I believe (indeed, the population of horses exceeded the human population by far) so there was always a happy, excited crowd cheering everybody on. To watch these great riders, who were, as this player describes, at one with their horses: such grace and strength and speed. Just amazing and often beautiful to watch.
