This video - Horses and the Magic of Mulching - A VERY SIMPLE WAY TO IMPROVE YOUR LAND by the Equiculture and Horse Riders Mechanic KZfaq Channel is about the VERY popular subject of mulching - using your horses - by Jane and Stuart Myers of EQUICULTURE who developed The Equicentral System which combines regenerative grazing, natural horsekeeping, horse behavior (behaviour), horse care, horse management, horse pasture management and horse welfare.
If you want to learn about sustainable horsekeeping - natural horse management - from the equine experts on this subject then this is the channel for you!
You can create paddock paradise for your horse, but this series is NOT about creating a track system but is instead about The Equicentral System, a holistic approach to horse and land management, it includes the concept of regenerative grazing using horses.

Looking at buying property in the next few years so that I can raise goats 🐐 and small breed cows 🐄 . Actually hoping to get a property where the land has been heavily degraded and therefore get it for a lower price. Planning on heavily mulching with a combination of woodchips, hay and waste fruit and verges from the local supermarket. To be honest, I’m not concerned about any veggies germinating, as I’ll Eat some and the animals will eat some and the rest will be trodden back into the ground. Once I’ve got the mulch starting to break down, I plan on overseeing with mix of a goat 🐐 and beef pasture mix, then when I’m getting a good crop of grass I’ll introduce the animals. I’ll be using rotational grazing to avoid over grazing and allow rest periods on the land.

Thanks for sharing this great information Jane. I have been trying to do an equicentral system here in southern QLD on the Granite Belt. Bare patches appearing where the rabbits are at work and where I have just had to let the horses out of the holding area as they are so fed up with standing around due to this dreadful drought that has been going on for over 2 years now. I think I need to keep topping up with my manure/hay that I collect and pile up daily. Haven't been able to compost as too dry and labour intensive. I have never had grass seeds come up from round bale mulching either. Rhodes grass doesn't grow well here. My place does look better than surrounding neighbours where no management is practiced but still no too good. Going through a drought of such extremes makes me wonder how sustainable horse keeping is at all. Very hard. I guess if anything will help it is an EC system.

Tracey, it is difficult in a drought, all you can really do is damage control. However we used to live not too far from you and used mulching during an extended SE Qld drought. Whilst it was true that nothing grew during the drought, what the mulch was doing was providing protection for the soil, holding what little moisture was in there and protecting the fungi and micro-organisms in the soil. When the drought eventually broke after nearly 2 years, then the mulch started to break down and improve the soil. Some of the seeds in the hay did germinate, but we also hand scattered other seeds into the mulch as it started to break down. And yes, in such conditions, horse-keeping is a massive challenge, but we do believe that the Equicentral System is the only system that gives you the chance to improve your land.

Yes I agree Jane , must get some other seeds to sprinkle in soon, rain dependent of course. I have shared to my business page so I hope you get more interest. Thanks for your reply. @@equicultureandhorseridersm7003

This is an excellent video! Thank you! It is well explained and I had NO IDEA that I could mulch with old hay! One question about watching out for a non weedy hay to use as mulch. I am in Pennsylvania (Northeast USA) and I feed Timothy to my horses and they eat ALL of it from small bales. Can I use "clean out "of old hay from other horse owners and not worry about what type of hay it is? ** I Love the idea of putting down the hay and also supplementing with some seed to provide diversity. Thanks again for a wonderful video! I am currently taking the course from Equiculture and really learning so much.

Yes, its great isn't it, using 'waste' to improve your pasture. Yes, you can use clean out from other horse owners, keep an eye out though for any weeds that may appear if you don't know the source. However, the great thing about mulching is (just the same in your garden), that its easier to spot and to hand pull any weeds that do appear in mulch than it would be if they were growing in compacted soil. So you can get on top of them before they become too established, However not all weeds are bad, some of them can be very beneficial, but that is another story. And thank you so much for watching and commenting! Also, so glad to hear you are enjoying the mini-course!

Thanks for this great information!You mentioned using manure for mulching, does it have to be composted first or can it be fresh? If it was fresh I suppose you’d have to fence it off while it did its work?
@equicultureandhorseridersm7003
@equicultureandhorseridersm7003 4 жыл бұрын
If the manure is from the horses while they are eating the round bales that is fine, just leave it in place and it will break down along with the hay when you remove the horses and let the mulch do its thing. Otherwise composted manure is great, but also, mulching can be carried out using fresh manure that has a decent amount of hay or straw mixed with it, so if you have large bare areas you can actually 'compost in place' by putting mulch in those areas and keeping the horses off those areas until the mulch has broken down and the new plants are well established.

Does mulching correctly take a long time? I've got some wrapped bales that have been dumped, I think they are a few years old so assuming that they can still be used this would be a great way to use them up! The only bare patches we have are the gate area so I'm wondering if I can change the gate area and mulch the old, but wondering if it's a good idea to make another permanent gate if it takes a while?
@stuartmyers8418

The time the mulch takes to break down depends on a few things, but mainly moisture. So in wet times it breaks down quickly, in dry it can take a while, however it is protecting the soil from both heat and weed infestation. If you mulch a gate area you have to wait until it breaks down and give the seeds time to germinate and establish themselves, so depending on the time of year it could take a few months before the grass is strong enough to be walked over. The hay you describe sounds great for bare areas, but you can also use it in any weedy areas you have.

Hi Kathy, funny you should say that we were in Spain last week and we were just saying how desperately landowners/managers in Spain need to start doing things that we advocate such as mulching. Depending on where you in are in Spain getting hold of materials to mulch with may take some creative thinking, so if hay is not readily available you will need to use other materials, make sure you sign up for the free course for more info...
