The settlement is a joke. I noticed the website runs well because they want you to easily foriet your right to sue them if your identity is actually stolen. To avoid forfeiting your right to sue them for the breach you have to send in a letter by like November. Notice how that's earlier and harder to do than filling out the claim? It's because this settlement limits their liability.

The Capital One breach also affected anyone who ever applied for an account there, including if the application was denied. So even if you never actually did business with Capital One, you could still be part of that 100 million affected. All of your application data would have been what was accessed and likely disseminated. If you think about the aggressive marketing Capital One has done to college students over the years, even having people on campus processing applications outside dorms and on quads, their information is now at play.

Dave is actually wrong here. Equifax isn't paying $125 for people that have paid for personal info cleanup or for their time. They are actually paying to anyone that has been compromised in the hack. You can claim ADDITIONAL money on top of the $125 if you have paid for credit cleanup services, or for your hours spent related to the hack (e.g. if you spent an hour on the phone with a company after your info was hacked, you could claim for time spent). I think he's correct that most people won't get paid the full amount but he has the details wrong here.

there should be a law from them having your information because they can't keep personal information safe anymore. 5. I don’t want Equifax to have my data. What can I do? Equifax is one of three national credit bureaus. These companies collect information about your credit history, such as how many credit cards you have, how much money you owe, and how you pay your bills. Each company creates a credit report about you, and then sells this report to businesses who are deciding whether to give you credit. You cannot opt out of this data collection. However, you can review your credit report for free andfreeze your credit.

Technically, Equifax does have your permission to have your information. Part of any credit application is allowing the creditor to 1: Check your credit with the credit bureau and, 2: Share your information with said credit bureau. So while you didn't give them permission directly, you did by proxy when you agreed to the terms of your credit application. That said... I completely agree that there is not enough regulation enforced on the credit bureaus and situations like these are only going to become more frequent as technology evolves and we move closer and closer to becoming a completely digital society.

It means that your credit score can't be pulled in case someone steals your identity and tries to take out a loan in your name.

Too many people have said they wanted the 125. More than they thought. The Identity protection is worth more.

@@just_another_bot0110 I’ll use Experian identify theft as a example. So Dave said that you will be lucky if you get 3 dollars if you chose to get paid. The identify theft cost $29.99. For 12 months that come to 359.88. For 4 years which I believe that’s how long you can get it cost $1439.32. That’s why I was saying it’s a better value. $3.00 vs $1439.32. Experian will give it to you for free.

@@just_another_bot0110 sorry i was confused. So identity theft is not a credit card. they will monitor your accounts for any thing that looks odd on your credit score. Some have protection up to 1 million dollars. If some one dose steal your identity they will do all the paper work and protect your accounts. Also make sure that it protects your bank account also. With them doing the work that saves you a lot of headache on doing it yourself.

It's all a cooperate effort - there are no "hacks". $3/piece is just about what personal info sells for on the black market.

That is what happens when those companies stick to old technology and don't upgrade their security software especially when it matters and allow hackers to send them malware and infect their computers and their data centers follow the same issues if a particular kind of data center server is commonly used, it needs the protection and firewall and so on to provide the needed security. But in all honesty I wish they could abolish the credit bureaus entirely and have a government related credit check since the government is the one the issues your passport and social security number and is where you file taxes anyway and so it would be a reliable way to check if you reached the point where you had to file for bankruptcy.

Everyone should get money REGARDLESS of whether you spent money to repair credit. Furthermore, Equifax shouldnt be allowed to do business anymore.

just wanted to see if he was gonna pass-off the $125 knowledge as his own.. also, you're wrong about the $125 being for people that spent to repair, it was initially the default amount regardless if you spent
