The "mechanic" that's happening is the faster the bosses health bar goes down, the faster his/their damage ramps up slightly. So, when you level up your heroes (or upgrade their attack) it's giving him a slight damage boost.

I only upgrade gear if it's 60 lvls below me. You just outgrow it so fast during the leveling process that it becomes a huge gold sink keeping it up to date. Just seems better to hold onto the gold and materials for a big upgrading session. Never have an issue with gold and don't see enough of an increase in Dream Realm from gear alone.

should i max all my equipment into lvl 240 for starter season ?

there is no marilee and korin in any of the new season bosses. worth upgrading koko before both of them then?
