Simple, somewhat affordable puukko, which gladly gladly does not try to pretend to be a newly invented wheel with nonsense bells n whistles. Tako by the way refers to forging, in this case its just visual trick to make it look a tad like its forged. Stacked birch bark + faux forge finish =TuohiTako.

That makes perfect sense, I hadn't thought about the hammerd finish. Thank you for the explanation. I like Eräpuu, they make good knives at a good price.

After Old Forest did his review of this, I ordered one. I like it very much as I’ve always wanted a puukko with a stacked birch bark handle. It’s an incredible value for the money. Unfortunately I’ve only used it for carving a pumpkin, but it worked great for that. I like your channel, especially the knife reviews and the outdoor activities. Keep up the good work!

It does seem to be about the cheapest knife of it's kind.wood jewel make a similar one.But I prefer the Erapuu version personally. Such a nice handle material,feels so warm, comfortable and grippy in the hand. Thanks for watching mate.

@@KuukkeliBushcraftyeah same as i thought. Eräpuu makes so much better knives, looking more better, better ergos and far better assembled. As if.... They make stuff with pride

Hi buddy, thanks for the interesting video. Several of my knives have a very small gap (4:25). All my classic Buck (102, 117 ...) between blade and guard. I especially see this with guards. Where the handle was fixed with epoxy resin, I have never had any problems with it. But the climatic conditions here are also not so harsh in winter. I had problems with the plastic grips from two companies. A gap had formed and widened in the plastic handles. In the end, the grips were loose. Have a good time JPH
@KuukkeliBushcraft
@KuukkeliBushcraft 6 ай бұрын
I do actually worry with some plastic handles of the tang slipping out of the handle. As for the gap, It is something you often see in puukkos. I don't know if it makes much difference to the strength. But I kind of see it as a sign of sloppy workmanship. Thanks for watching mate.

I have had it for a few weeks now. It really is a great puukko. I have done some light battening with it and it seems to take it without problems. And as yo mention it is a very comfortable knife and as most pukas very light to carry.
@KuukkeliBushcraft
@KuukkeliBushcraft 6 ай бұрын
All puukkos will take light battoning, it's just normal use. The problem is people nowadays expect a knife to do the job of an axe. There are knives that serve this function. A lightweight stick tang however does the job of a knife rather better in my opinion. The birch bark handles I really like. They just feel so good in the hand. Thanks for watching mate.

Great looking blade. 👍 I made myself something similar with a Mora blade blank years ago. I used antler on each end. Worked out pretty good, and it's super comfy and grippy. Wonderful handle material, is birch bark...
@KuukkeliBushcraft

I think it's my favourite handle material, at least for a normal use knife. I think synthetic handles can be more durable for extreme, rough and careless usage. Birch bark boh looks and feels extremely nice. Thanks for watching mate.

I have this knife, its amazing. I think for the price the gap is understandable. In my experience making these style knives the most time consuming part is fitting the bolster to the tang...as it takes lots of hand filing. So when you think about the cost of this puukko with included sheath and birch bark....its hard to fault them for not spending more time on the fitment.
@KuukkeliBushcraft
@KuukkeliBushcraft 5 ай бұрын
Me too, the bolster is a real pain. With birch bark cutting all of the individual pieces too but I guess they have something a bit more effective than a pair of fishing shears😂. It is a fantastic knife for the price. Thanks for watching mate.

That’s a beautiful looking puukko. I recently acquired a very similar Kellam/Wood Jewel (?) “Wildwood” puukko withe the same blade and similar birch bark handle (mine flares and has a flat brass pommel), my first. It really is a wonderful, comfortable and warm grip. I’ve been told that once you’ve used a stacked birch bark handle, nothing else feels better. I guess I’d agree. I am very smitten with the birch bark grip!
@KuukkeliBushcraft

Sounds like the Wood Jewel version. So many companies manufacturing for Kellam knives that it is hard to keep track😂
@osmoahma7561
@osmoahma7561 6 ай бұрын
I would be a little surprised if your Wildwood is really made by Wood Jewel as it looks hellova lot nicer than all the Wood Jevel knives im aware of. Maybe its then a fully new outsourced custom order made only for Kellam. Yet it looks more like Eräpuu product due to its sense-making shape/ergos/aesthetics etc. Personally i would never buy any of Wood Jewels own designs for various reasons, but hey its just my preference.
@KuukkeliBushcraft
@KuukkeliBushcraft 6 ай бұрын
@@osmoahma7561 thinking about it wildwood does sound a bit like a bad translation of Eräpuu 😂. Wilderness wood/tree. Wood Jewel aren't bad but can be a little hit and miss in my experience.

After posting my comment, I came across some pictures of the Erapuu and fully agree that is what I probably have, rebranded by Kellam (I purchased it on eBay, pre-owned, prior origins unknown). Looks very, very much the same… even the sheath is identical, if that is any indication. At any rate, it’s a beautiful Puukko and quickly becoming a favorite.

Hmm.. Never really thought about the name, but I think its pretty much like you said. Also I think word ‘Takotuote’ means some sort of forged product im general: “Tako product”. Maybe Tuohitako = Forged product wrapped with Birchbark, ‘Birchbark forged product’ or something? Anyways, such a great knife! Will take it actually today to the woods! Thanks for the shoutshout Tim!! Much appreciated! Have a great day there in the beautiful north! 🌲🔪🌲

I think the tuohi refers to the handle, and tako refers to the blade because its finish, and the tuohitako is just marketing name for the knife model. Looks like these blades are sold as "takoterä" i would just translate it as hammered blade or something like that

Great review, and great knife. Aside from the rixasso (which isnt a big deal, but i complain about relentlessly), its one of my favorite production knives out there. I kinda wish they'd offer it with the 95mm PT blade. ... But Lamnia having them in stock during those 10-12% off sales makes up for it, lol.
