Benazir Bhutto was the first elected female Prime Minister of Pakistan. She was also the first female leader to lead an Islamic Country. She was elected twice, once in 1988 and other in 1993. She also served as the opposition leader. She was born in Karachi and was the elder daughter of former Prime minister Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto. During both of her terms, her opponent was Nawaz Sharif, whose party Islami Jamhori Etihad (IJI) and then Muslim League Nawaz formed the government when Benazir Bhutto was the opposition leader. Her first term was not so effective as it lasted only 20 months. There were serious cases of corruption against her husband Asif Ali Zardari. Her first government was dismissed by President Ishaq Khan. Before becoming prime minister she came to Pakistan in 1977 when her father was arrested. Then she along with her mother campaigned for PPP. Then she was exiled and then returned to the country during the 1988 elections. Bhutto’s second term was much better than in the first term. In her second term, Bhutto enjoyed the support of the military. During the 1993 elections, PPP won and Pakistan Muslim League (N) formed the opposition party. Nawaz Sharif still holds the control of Punjab province. The monopoly of gold imports was given to her husband Asif Ali Zardari who made $10 million from it and then deposited it to the Indian bank. During her second term, Bhutto made 24 foreign trips. Domestic violence was at peak during the PPP rule. Bhutto ordered, “Operation Blue Fox” in which almost 3,000 people died in Karachi. Relation with her brother Murtaza was also not good, and he was murdered by the police. Bhutto also disagreed with her father’s policies of Nationalization and socialist economies. After the soviet union's fall, Bhutto started to privatized major industries, but in reality, nothing happened. The value of rupee fell from 21 to 30 against the United States dollars. United Nations sanctions were also there. Pressler Amendment did the rest of the things to damage the economy of Pakistan. all state-own banks were privatized after 1993 elections and state earned Rs 42 Billion from it. United states also invested $20 Billion in Pakistan. in 1995 Bhutto visited the USA and met with Clinton to remove Pressler Amendment. Bhutto condemns India’s nuclear program and called for the sign of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (CNTBT). Relation with the military was good, as senior military officers were professional and liked western democratic ideas. on 27 October 1996 Jamat e Islami started to protest against the PPP government. On 4 November 1996, her hand-picked man Farooq Lughari dismissed her government. She filed a case in Supreme Court but SC gave its verdict in favor of dismissal by 6-1. During her second term as an opposition leader, she criticized every policy of Nawaz Sharif. In April 1999 Ehtesab Bench gave Bhutto five year prison, $8.6 million fine and disqualified her from public office. She spent 8 years in Dubai. Then he returned to Pakistan to contest the 2008 elections. On 27 December 2007, she was assassinated in Rawalpindi.
