I love the fragile "weeping" sound of the erhu. The way string instruments can bring out their sound, it's like they're singing whenever they play; the erhu's is between a soulful birds song and a weeping lady.

People playing music on wine glasses sound a little like people singing too, and of course other bowed instruments. Check out "man playing hallalujah on wine glasses" and you'll see what i mean :)

blazednlovinit i think theres a science behind the erhu tho, it has the same range or frequency, "The erhu sounds similar to human voice, and can imitate many natural sounds such as birds and horse. It is a very expressive instrument, most well-known for playing melancholic tune, but also capable of play merry melody."
@Hermit-Crab
@Hermit-Crab 8 жыл бұрын
The erhu is known to have a very melancholic sound. The title for this particular piece of music may roughly be translated as "Memories of Yubei". Yubei refers to the northern part of the Henan province. Judging from the title and the melody, the music seems to be full of melancholy and nostalgia reminiscing the historical past of the Yubei area. You probably didn't know it but you clearly felt it. Hence the tears.

Yu Hongmei is, of course, brilliant: but let's hear a bit of applause for the pianist! A crisp, well-judged accompaniment that makes an excellent foil to the erhu's melodic line.

The erhu is one of the most beautiful instruments because it has the same range as a human voice, it literally touches us on an emotional and instinctual level. When the erhu sounds sad, we literally feel the sadness of another human being.

Eason music (singapore based) has many more options and proceeds into higher qualities (imo) and shipping can be expensive. That's why I believe it's good to go with SOA first since it's relatively close most likey, and good shipping. Came pretty quick, too! Good luck on your journey!

There are no words for China. To enter immediately into the spirit of a culture, one must listen to his music. The refinement of Chinese culture, sweetness that plucks the interiority. The erhu is the human soul that speaks, silent, cries, exists.

I don't know what to say. Both the musicians are extremely talented and tremendously practiced. The erhu has piqued my interest since I heard of its name in a few books I read. I tend to be a very curious person and did my research on this instrument. I can't even imagine how long it would take to learn even the basics of playing the erhu. two strings that can make so many different astoundingly beautiful sounds must surely be worth learning. what makes me sad is how few people I've asked have never even heard of an erhu. it's beautiful and is even possible to move someone to tears (which I have tested on a few of my friends). I wish this kind of music and instrument would be better known by those I have encountered.

The erhu is a really difficult instrument to play; though in theory it is like a violin, the techniques involved are very different. It's really hard to switch strings because of the fact that the bow is actually between them. The fingerings are also farther apart than on a violin.

The chinese culture is one of the most acient in history. The Chinese People new the Creator God, as you can see in the old Chinese Alphabet. The Erhu with its voice-like sounds imitates for me wonderfully our longing and worship to God. Also it reflects to me the sorrows of this world and the hope for a New One. Wonderful!

Wonderful thank you. The lilting lament and commiserate over much hard work and life's hurts with a drift towards a sentimental longing an imbibe in longings, a reverie at suns set with a cup or two of Saki and then a leap of energy into may's dance of flower and fecundity of joys sunning smile and all places in between. From a lullaby to rest to a call to the dance such strings resonate from east to west, in Ireland a sentimental ballad to a prancing jig a reel a jest. Great beauty vigour and grace.

The beauty of Yu Hongmei as an artist overwhelms this board. No less amazing is also the beauty of piano and erhu combining to bring out perhaps the best melody of a local folkloric narrative--the Ballad of North Henan Province. From the emotional music one can hear a touching story in remembrance of a distant eventful past.
