Lynyrd Skynyrd....Ronnie Van Zant lead southern rock band, created great music, 1973-1977. Hell of a show! A plane crash in 1977 took Ronnie and two others. The band members and the wives of the lost members pledged to never play as a band again. However, in 1988 Johnny Van Zant did a reunion tour. That lead to a touring career that lasts to this day, and by agreement 30% of all concert proceeds go to the families of the members that died in '77. They play the music of the original band, the songs the Ronnie and others wrote '73-'77. I am not much of a country music fan at all, but I've been following Eric Church since about 2006 because he is most definitely not your typical country singer. If he was I wouldn't be such a big fan. This man is so full of talent it's just incredible, and I'm enjoying watching him come into his own of late.

As a fan of Skynyrd, I say this is a great cover. I too am a fan of Church simply because of the good music and the fact he wont conform to the new crap country sound. Good for you Eric Church keep up the good work

i am a skynyrd junkie(as my name says) and i hate when people cover/change skynyrd songs but i actually think this is one of the good ones, sounds a lot like old school southern rock(the best)..i like how he really doesn't change the line...curtis loew was the finest picker to ever play the blues(my fav line)

I don't understand the people saying this is a disgrace or Van Zant would be pissed to hear it, etc. Church is clearly a Skynyrd fan and wanted to cover one of his (and my) favorite songs of theirs. Especially since he put his own twist on it, bringing a little more energy, it's tough to even compare the two versions. The original is a classic and one of my favorite songs, but I thought EC did a pretty good job with it.

Some folks are offended anytime an artist strays too far from the original version of a song they hold dear; just out of respect. Understandable - to them, it's as if you drew a mustache on the Mona Lisa. Personally I'm grateful to anyone who covers and promotes this fabulous but relatively lesser known Skynyrd song. And I like the attitude this version has. I think this RVZ tune deserves to have been a lot more famous, so my hat is off to anyone who puts it out there, and makes it more widely known.

Look, I can understand the sentimental attachment to original stuff from Lynyrd Skynyrd. I'm a big Skynyrd fan and their Southern rock remains unsurpassed IMHO. Ronnie was a special and unique talent and will always be missed. However, Eric Church does a great rendition of this tune and I love it! This cover does a good job of helping to keep LS music alive while not pretending to copy or imitate the original. An artist can't do much better than that and the guitar work is excellent. All us LS diehards should give Eric a break. Understand that he does no disrespect to LS and just the opposite, he honors their body of work. Rock on, Eric.

For my "money" (joke on the music industry, sorry guys but you had your dynasty and it's over lol), Eric and Brantley are some of the best new Country acts out there. No fluff and good drinkin' songs. Zac Brown is another talent, but that's more expansive.. very heartfelt stuff.

@DallasGreensBeard Agreed. I'm a huge Skynyrd fan. The last thing I want to do is hear a cover that sounds exactly or tries to sound exactly like the original. Cover songs are supposed to change it up without ruining the song. Now I'm no fan of Ashley Ray's cover of Sweet Home Alabama, but that's fine, it's her interpretation (or record company's interpretation) but I really dig Eric's version of The Ballad of Curtis Leow.

I have been reading all of your posts on this song and i guess that this is a remake. i have never herd the original but i think this one is awesome!! And people can put there own twist to songs. like when the singers perform on stage they can make there song a little bit different than on there CD.

Eric Church does not fit in with the other "country bumpkins". The man has real talent. I think you misunderstand the purpose of a cover. Its not meant to be exactly the same and its not meant to sound the exact same. This is a decent cover of a classic hit.
