I can't help but think that if the BBC had financed / shown the new 'Cosmos' with Brian instead of Neil Degrasse Tyson (Good job tho' he did!!!), it would have got the highest ratings for any Science show ever (since Tomorrows World.) Mostly in the much sought after 30 - 50 y/o housewives demographic. Of course, they'd still nag too much, and be unable to cook without burning the toast, but at least they'd realise how insignificant and unimportant it was... :)

That's a good point. "In how many parallel universes are middle aged frustrated women getting cross-eyed and sweaty?'
@rg00579 жыл бұрын
My comment is entirely unrelated to the program, which I haven't experienced, and is limited to this video. It is not possible to determine how roomy the infinite monkey cage is, without knowing the population distribution of monkeys within the space. In other words, it's as roomy as it is. The space could be 100% monkey. Of course, they'd all be dead or dying. That is gloomy, unless you don't like monkeys. Then it's just gross. Also, if infinite monkeys type forever, there is no guarantee that they would ever type Hamlet. For that to work, we need to know the nature of monkey typing. If there is any character sequence in Hamlet that monkeys never type, for whatever reason, then they will never type Hamlet. (Or if they always eat the paper, or break the keyboard, after page 35...) This question may not be solvable in reasonable time, because just after you end your observations, the data could reasonably change. One problem with "forever" (which also applies to infinite space into which infinite cages fit) is that it probably doesn't exist, and at the very least it extends beyond human civilization, and certainly our own lifetimes. Physics probably should not be invoking "forever", when it claims time was created at the big bang, and will become directionless if/when the universe reaches maximum entropy. Time inside our universe is big, but does not appear to be infinite in either direction. Last, although math is used considerably in science, it is not science. It's a nice tool for predicting outcomes, but those outcomes must be verified empirically to be science. So far, there is not sufficient empirical evidence for other universes, and maybe there never will be. These science fiction ideas thrill the kids, but provide ready fodder for science deniers. Don't do that.

An infinite amount of monkeys would write Hamlet actually. Everything that can happen, will happen.
@OfficiallyANerd7 жыл бұрын
saying that because something is infinite means that it contains everything, is flawed logic. There are an infinite number of numbers between 1 and 2, non of them are 3.
@TootsMacTait5 жыл бұрын
OfficiallyANerd 3 is an integer, there are no integers between 1 and 2.
@TootsMacTait5 жыл бұрын
The distribution of monkeys is not an issue as there is infinite space in the infinite monkey cage. This may be verging on philosophical but the way I see it is; with infinite space available, each individual of the infinite monkeys will have infinite space as, the space being infinite, the space will not be constrained by ‘amount per monkey’. Infinite monkeys in infinite space each have infinite space by definition. I hope I’ve worded that as clearly as I picture it in my head!
