I made 3 of these pillow covers. I am a beginner and have been sewing for almost 2 years. I am very impressed with myself. Each pillow came out very cute. Of course, there are some little flaws here and there but, nothing to noticeable. I will be making more once I get my new sewing machine! Happy Quilting.

Hi Erica, I want to make an 18 inch pillow using a jelly roll. But I don’t want to use the sashing. What size blocks do I need to make an 18 inch pillow? Also, is there a book out there for making pillows using jelly rolls? I am a beginner and all these measurements can be a little overwhelming. Thank you

You would make your blocks 9-1/2" square, but that will change how many strips you sew together as well. I would probably do the sashing between blocks, but then skip the outside border fabric, that will finish at 18-1/2"

Erica...Im having trouble sandwiching...my quilts....they dont come out perfect. How can I make it better...I lay them down on my floor and try so hard to make them perfect but when I start sewing the three pieces together the material pinches together and does not lay flat...it bunches up...what suggestions do you have for me?

So if it's bunching up while you are sewing the three layers of your quilt sandwich together, that just means your machine is pulling the backside through faster than the frontside because the teeth are on the backside. I would suggest either using a walking foot on your machine, or adjusting the presser foot tension if your machine has that capability. I would also suggest using a new needle as well, I change mine each time I quilt. If it is still bunching, I'm assuming you're pin basting, I would suggest spray basting using 505 Spray Adhesive. I used to get bunching depending on the type of quilting I was doing and since changing over to spray basting I don't have that issue at all. I never pin baste anymore :)

I'm new at this and I can't understand where you get the figure 19.5" x 26"? I'm making a pillow that is 18" square. I read somewhere that the formula to make an envelope type back would be double the size of the pillow + 6". So that would be 36" + 6" = 42". But you are doubling your back fabric, right? Because you folded it. I don't understand how you get those measurements. Can you shed some light on this? Thanks!

Hi Barbie, The formula that says "Pillow x 2 + 6" is to create a cover for an ENTIRE pillow (front and back), we are just making the backing since we quilted the pillow front so ours will be different. So as shown in the video you will fold both backing pieces in half so they measure 19.5" x 13" ea. That way they will overlap each other by about 6". I'm sure there is some formula for figuring this out, but I usually just go by what looks good on my pillow. For an 18" pillow I would probably go with two pieces 18" x 24", that way when folded in half you would have 18" x 12" and they again would overlap by about 6".
