Kyle was hilarious and I'm pretty sure he was the face of all of us. And I agree, Thorpe was freaking awesome in this episode. I think I'm starting to warm to him, even if I wouldn't want him in charge of my murder investigation ;)

I feel sorry for Ryan. He clearly wasn`t himself neither when he killed Amy, attempted to kill Tegan or kidnapped Kim. Because he has these irrational fears his entire world will collapse if people find out he is gay, those fears block out everything else, takes control over him and dictates him to do whatever is necessary to keep his secret. The fact he can go so far as to kill to prevent people from finding out he is gay, proves he was not sane at the time. He had no more control over his actions when he killed Amy, attempted to kill Tegan and kidnapped Kim, than a schizophrenic has over the commanding voices in his head. Therefore it wasn`t Ryan, but his irrational fears that committed those crimes. Ryan needs therapy - not prison.

Ryan isn`t a psychopath. He is controlled by irrational fears of his entire world collapsing should people get to know the fact he is gay. Since that fear is so enormous he kills to keep his secret, clearly it isn`t rational. Which makes Ryan insane and unable to control his actions and thoughts when those fears has been evoked. As a result Ryan is three people. A police detective, widow and stepdad. A teenage boy stuck in the time and place his father caught him with a male companion. And lastly, a robotic monster who will do anything to prevent people from finding out Ryan is gay. But the third one Ryan is not aware of. He sees what he has done, and has to attempt to prevent those crimes from being discovered. But Ryan himself cannot control that aspect of his personality, it is evoked and controlled by his irrational fear of being discovered to be gay. The police detective and family man represents the man Ryan wished he could be, and has tried to be. But the teenager trapped in time and place of when his dad caught him with a guy is who Ryan truly is. Large parts of him has never gotten away from that moment of humiliation, shame and disappointment. And that is why he developed his third personality - the robotic monster who killed Amy, attempted to kill Tegan and kidnapped Kim - he protects the vulnerable gay teenager. Ryan`s story line is a tragic one. I feel more pity and sympathy for the poor guy, than I hate him. He didn`t kill Amy, nor is responsible for any of the other crimes - his irrational fear of being identified as gay is the culprit. Everything Ryan did was dictated and controlled by that irrational fear. Both the unconscious bits, killing Amy, attacking Tegan, kidnapping Kim - but also the conscious bits, trying to conceal his tracks, keep her siblings away from Tegan and bring food and water to Kim. He had to continue what he had started, cause if he didn`t, his big secret could come out. And that being his greatest fear, his third personality - the robotic monster - would emerge as soon as that fear was evoked, and Ryan himself would no longer be in control of his actions and thoughts.

Tvjunkieful12, thanks for the neat analysis but you seem to be biased to me and your words appear to be rather those of a barrister defending his client than a medical expert: Ryan is not portrayed as a man with split personalities and of course he is consciously manipulating his fellow Hollyoakers to hide his crimes (which he is absolutely responsible for) ... he may be traumatised and stricken by fear of exposure but his personality disorder provides him with the ability to block out human emotions like empathy or regret the minute he feels threatened ... wich perfectly qualifies him as a psychopath. After the impulse to kill, wrongly put behind bars or even take hostage has subsided he goes back to a very controlled man who meticulously keeps up all the ruses to prevent everyone around him to discover his true nature ... so strictly speaking he has sociopathic and psychopathic tendencies ... doesn´t make him any more innocent or likable for that matter!

That is a legal conclusion and argument - not a medical one. The medical definition of insanity does not always concur with the legal definition of the same. Other than that, well spotted. But when you have been confronted with as many psychopaths, mental conditions, pre trial observation reports and testimonies from psychological expert as I have, you pick up a thing or two along the way. In fact I wouldn`t be at all surprised - if you are a general practitioner or medical doctor in a hospital - if I have encountered more, and a wider specter of, various psychopaths and mental conditions, than what you encounter through your work.

I don´t recall him hearing voices or showing real signs of paranoia and his character is shown beeing aware of and having memories of his actions while and after he killed amy and tried to suffocate teagan and defintitely while he was/is taking kim hostage ... so I would not be so sure about the insanity plea ... but I don´t care if he´ll end up in a prison cell or the looney bin ... I really hope it happens soon because the whole mess is going on for far two long now...!

Team Starry I have been a starry fan all the way and will forever be, but now I just don't like how ste is being with Ryan right now. ShawtyKnow HeBadd What, in my opinion, makes Kyle and Harry a solid match is the similar ways they went after Ryan and Ste respectively. Those two have the same view when it comes to putting the man of their choice first, be faithful and loyal and focus on each other, more than anybody else. I think Harry deserves to have someone that puts him first. He is too young to come second and lower to anyone from Ste`s kids, to Amy, Ste`s sisters and niece - even JP, as he experienced again and again with Ste last year. Since Ste tend to stray rather suddenly and frequently, I don`t think he would be good for Kyle. Because of the kids, and the memories of Amy, I think Ste and Ryan are more likely of both being faithful to each other, and become happy together - had it not been for everything Ryan has done to keep his true self a secret. But since I think it is fairly obvious those fears were both irrational, and also so significant they controlled both his actions and thoughts so he acted on instinct without realizing neither what he was doing, or the consequences of his actions - until afterwards. Which makes those acts the legal definition of temporary insanity, and he therefore likely wouldn`t have been sent to jail, but to a mental institution where he could receive therapy, and would be free to return to society as soon as the irrational fears no longer was a problem. Learning Ryan did what he did because he was temporarily insane I think would have made it possible for both Ste, Leah and Lucas to continue to see him as the Ryan and Ryry they knew and loved. Giving them all a chance to become a happy and functioning family.
