“The Wedding of the Waters” was how Governor Dewitt Clinton described the canal in 1825 when he carried a barrel of water from Lake Erie to the Atlantic on the maiden voyage. This trail left a deep impression on my soul-so much beauty to cram into a 7-day cycling trip in June of 2022. Please enjoy this is “ride-along”, extended video of the trail. 7:20. Me too. We lived in Toronto (Well..Mississauga...right on the border of Toronto) for four years, and it was wonderful. Apart from the winter. Yeesh it was cold. =D. But it was a wonderful place to live. Thank you for this great video. It helps me see the different types of trail I'll be on, and helps me prepare accordingly.

My grandfather operated the Adams Basin bridge when I was young. I thought his job was the most important job a man could have. Thank you for your efforts and posting this. I plan to do the trail this summer. This is most informative.

I biked both the Ohio to Erie Trail and The Erie Canalway Trail in 2023! Both great but the Erie Canalway definitely was more complete and the better of the two. I am ready to bike The Rock Island and Katy Trail across Missouri in 2024. However, the Erie across NY was so nice I might do that again too.😊

Hi from New Zealand. About 4 years ago four of us Kiwis rode from Chicago heading East. We happened to come across Lockport - and carried on to past Syracuse (Amtrack back). No real planning - just ride and follow our noses. Yes, we had heard of the canal (there was even an old school song about it) but didn't know we were about to see it! So great to follow the canal towpath (mostly) after Lockport. I'll always have fond memories of this section of our trip especially. Now back to my WinTrainer in the garage re-riding the much of route, together with you. Thanks so much :)

Thanks for this great video. Its gives a first time rider a good overall view of trail conditions. I attempted a 2 day ride round trip from Little falls to Rome but sadly it got cut short by multiple flat tires on the road section heading into Utica. Loved the Little falls to Llion section. I now have new tires and will pack a half dozen spare tubes for my next attempt.

@@RideAlongAdventures I have a exercise bike that I got during covid when my gym shut down. Got serious about a year ago and I average abut 25 miles a day in front of a 50" smart tv that I get youtube on. I am 78 and wanted to keep up my cardio so this work wonders. I have ridden with over a 1,000 different rides in all states, some more than once. My favorite is still the erie canal and especially riding with you. You make it fun to ride and I keep riding it at least once a week. I have ridden in Maryland and Deleware with other riders but hope you can post one to ride and keep covering the country. Really appreciate you.

I enjoyed the video and it was nice to see the trail and follow along with your adventure. The only critique I have is the look you applied to the video. It's like you used "Blockbuster" from the Magic Bullet Looks Suite. The darks are just crushed so hard that I kept on finding myself wishing that I could see more detail and the sky had a strange yellow tinge that's characteristic of that look. It's your creative expression and as long as you're happy with the way the video ended up, that's all that really matters. For me, it just kept pulling me out, which is a shame because I really wanted to immerse myself in your trip. (I watched on a high end 4K Sony TV and my cell, but it was the same experience for me on both.)

Thanks for the reply and, well, it’s a complicated response. First of all, I agree with your assessment 100%. At that time, I was taking a video production class and was intrigued by color grading. I spent WAY too much time on it and, combined with my ignorance, the result was a mess. About six months later, I returned to using default color settings and only correcting when something was just super off. If you look at my latest vids (from about a year ago to now), I think the colors are more natural. I’ve thought about redoing some of the messy vids and republishing but I’ve got too much current content to get out. Lesson: sometimes simple is better. 😊 Lesson 2: color correction is an art and requires a lot of time, practice and patience, all of which I rarely have. Lesson 3: pro color correction is subtle but a lot of classes make it a centerpiece. I talked to a professional documentarian a few months back and he was showing me how he was adding A PERCENT of adjustment to his content! One percent change. 😂 Anyway, thanks for watching anyway. I hope my later stuff looks better.

Thanks for the great video. I am hoping to ride this trail sometime this fall. Hopefully early in the fall since I know their weather can turn pretty cold very early in the season. I'm planning to do the train from Albany to Buffalo and was wondering if you parked at the Amtrak station and how expensive it was. I'm hoping I can manage to do this as Amtrak canceled bike service on their Maple Leaf line as of July 1 so the only option left is the Empire line, which has been filling up with bikes ever since. I rode the train from DC to Pittsburgh last year for the GAP/C&O trail and it's such a great way to begin a bike tour. I'm hopefully going to be doing a lot of camping along the Erie trail but it's nice to know that hotel accommodations are available if needed. I'm surprised that you don't ride with a Garmin or Kamoot GPS to help keep you on track. It certainly helped me quite a few times on the GAP. Keep up the epic rides. Hope to see you on the trail sometime. Cheers

Don’t hold me to it but I think it was like $70 for the week. As I recall, there were tiers and I wanted to park in a covered area which was slightly more expensive. There was plenty of parking. The train I was on had room for four bikes ($20). I absolutely loved this trail. I’d totally do it again but I would camp this time. If you take video/photos, please share-I’d love to se your experiences. Yes, I need to rethink my mapping strategy. Getting lost is fun the first few times-not so much after so many miles. 😉

Bryan, I binged this in stages over the weekend, and finished it today. Amazing. I spent my college years near both Syracuse and Rochester, so it was nice to see those places again. I remember a day in the mid 80's in Rochester's Genesee Valley Park, with me and my buddy, each on a different side of the canal, tossing an Aerobie back and forth, There were no trails to speak of back then, but I have followed the progress of the trail expansion over the years, and it's great to see it complete, less a few missing signs and a gap here & there. 3 years ago, I did a similar ride thru Ohio on their amazing trail network, and to get there I drove thru most of what you rode in N.Y. Now I need to go back, visit some family, and ride it on my bike. Thank you for sharing.

I live in the eastern part of the canal area (Schenectady and Amsterdam). It was wonderful seeing some familiar sights and to be honest I'm not that familiar with Western New York. I can identify with you on wanting coffee in Amsterdam. I'm not sure when you went on your trip, but there are now several eateries on the south side of Amsterdam (just look straight down the street from Amsterdam Castle). Guge's Dogs on Bridge Street serves a very hearty breakfast. Then when riding through Lower Rotterdam Junction, there is the Hungry Chicken. They bake the best cinnamon rolls ever. Sometimes when I extra time for my commute (on bike) I stop there and lounge in an Adirondack chair while eating.

The Canastota-Rome section is much nicer this year. The section where you have to cut across the gravel parking lot in Rome to find the path again (where it's roughest) is still roughest, but the parking lot is currently a construction site of some kind. I recommend cutting across the field before it, you can see some double track towards the canal that will lead you back to the path. Great video! Butchered the pronunciation of Canastota every single time though. 🤣

@@RideAlongAdventures I usually ride from Niawanda Park to Downtown Buffalo its 11 miles there and 11 back I really haven't been on much of the Erie canalway. Once to Lockport and back. I've been working so much. Gonna go watch your ride .

It’s a Trek Checkpoint ALR5 (2020). I run tubeless 43’ at about 40 psi and it’s a really soft ride. Sturdy frame. I had a cannondale road bike before so I went from a coupe to a truck. It’s a good solution for road and gravel.

How do you get those shots on camera of you from the front and the back and the sides? I see the pole shadow but I don't see the actual pole? Nice camera trick!

Yeah, it’s a cool feature of the Insta360 camera. It magically edits out the pole. It’s a good camera overall. I take it on most of my trips. Thanks for watching, Rus!

As always, great video. You look like Mr. Gulch in those drone shots, only thing missing was Toto. As much as I’d like to do this trail (I only live an hour from the middle section), it looks just too confusing to follow. (Typical New York State, all our tax dollars are funneled downstate into the black hole). I have no patience for getting lost. How dangerous are those road sections, they didn’t look too bad. I have the guidebook but not too impressive, it doesn’t list lodging options so thanks for the input.

Mr Gulch? lol. I should reuse that footage with the music someday. Ya know, it's pretty well marked. There's only a few places where it gets slightly confusing. I wouldn't let that hold you back. it's such a great trail. it's my #1 or #2 at this point. I just rode the Mickelson Trail out in South Dakota and I think that might have catapulted to #1. But, anyway...awesome history and unbelievable countryside which you probably already know. thanks for watching!

I finally had a chance to watch this... and you commenting on getting lost... geez... I got lost THREE TIMES in my own town trying to cut through on the paths a couple days ago. I was using apple maps since I have an apple watch. I won't do that again. It was messing me up left and right and having me go in circles. The pizza was COLD by the time I got home and my partner was getting worried! They've gotten pretty good for car maps, but I need to figure out good bike mapping because getting lost means tacking up unwanted miles. Now - about the video - nicely done. Now I can add another ride to things I might want to try. Thanks! (or gee, thanks?)

LOL. Getting lost is part of the adventure. In my own town? not yet but that's pretty funny. It was strange on this particular trip where my spider senses were tingling when I was lost...like "hmmmm...this doesn't seem right..."

I like the Panaracer Gravel King (sk), tubeless, 43s. I find they last longer than the other brands I've tried and they seem to be high quality. I don't do single track or other conditions that require significant traction so these tires provide the right amount of knobbiness (is that a word?).

I had to look it up…$74: $54 for me, $20 for the bike. I ride primarily a Trek checkpoint ALR5 with 40c tires. I’ve got another video with a gear review if you want more details. Thanks for watching.

Ok I’m glad I wasn’t alone. Im usually pretty good with directions. Not on this trip. The faded arrows seemed “clear” only AFTER the fact. 😉

How easy was it to and how did you discover the restrooms when you had to? Did you plan where you were going to eat prior to leaving? Did you edit out the camera selfie stick (I only noticed its shadow)? How did you attach the selfie stick? Did you hand hold it or was it attached otherwise?

There are towns every so often so I made pit stops whenever I wanted. I used the website bikeeriecanal.com to find food. The insta360 camera automatically remove the selfie stick. Nice feature! I held it in my hand and sort of rested it against the handlebars to provide some stability.

I watched about half and wanted to watch the whole thing. Unfortunately, the video quality was both overexposed in the lighted areas and under exposed in the shaded areas. Not sure if it's the limitation of your sensors or the settings you were using. I really liked the various selfie shots you did with your hand held. You couldn't see the pole at all... almost like a drone shot. Thanks for your efforts... the Erie Canal is a great ride. However, I was disappointed that it didn't have better connectedness. Gord

Thanks, Gord. Unfortunately I think some of it was my novice adjustments in Final Cut Pro. I have a lot to learn. The GoPro is generally pretty good. Cameraman, not so much.

Just finished the trail yesterday for the second time. East to west this time. Video coming. My riding buddy and I were discussing a loop around Lake Ontario during which we would most definitely enjoy some Labatts!!!! 😀

During this whole trip we don’t even know where you are and it’s like I’m in the first day of you traveling and you said something about over there I don’t know what you said. Let me some graffiti on the wall after that. Where are you? What are you doing? Not explaining where you are and stuff you know what I mean it’s like I know this is your journey, but you’ve chosen to lead us out of it, but not telling us where you are.

I try to include callouts with town names periodically. I mean, to each his own. I like to just “ride along” when I watch people’s trips hence the name of the channel. I’m trying to get better at narration. Regardless, thanks for the feedback. Just trying to get better with each video.
