You see this sort of play all the time where the opponent brings the knee in behind on hits. Its partly for balance and partly to ensure the hit puts the player down. It’s kind of amazing we don’t see concussions more often from that sort of thing. Going over backwards like that makes you pretty defenceless, and being a big tall guy makes it worse.
@andrewclarke81637 ай бұрын
This is the right take. I've previously commented here that this was a slew foot, but my earlier comment wasn't quite right... It's similar to a slew foot. Something needs to be done to get rid of using a leg to take a player down like that on a hit. Not sure *how* honestly, since it's hard to see in real time, but it's just far too dangerous to not do anything. This time it was a concussion, but the next time it might be a broken neck that paralyzes someone.
@dooodooo34747 ай бұрын
@@andrewclarke8163how is it similar to a slew foot? Clutterbucks skate didn’t even touch Branny’s.
@andrewclarke81637 ай бұрын
@@dooodooo3474 it's the fact that he used his leg to take Branny's legs out from under him. That is what makes slew footing so dangerous and the same thing happened here. Lots of slew foots don't involve contact with the actual skate (watch any slew footing compilation). The key difference here is that the initial primary contact was the hit on the upper body and the contact from the leg came after the initial contact.

@@tomaszgrzesik3916 Why not just hit shoulder to shoulder instead of doing this push with hands from the front and sweep with legs from behind. Clearly just intended for the player to fall hard. The league should look into that and make some rule changes.
@incumbentvinyl92917 ай бұрын
@@callmesceptical9114 Absolutely. Decades of experience one the ice, in the stands and on the sofa. Your guesswork is on par. Broke someone's collarbone on a clean hit when they were trying to carry the puck up ice at their own blue line. I've also been hit cleanly behind my own net out of the blue by a checker. Didn't break anything but I did suffer a minor shoulder injury. Our goalie managed to give me a heads up a split second before impact, so I manged to at least partially brace myself from the incoming train that I did not see coming. I looked at this closely and it definitely looks like Cal is a psychopath. The way he intentionally lifts his knee and pushes it under Erik's legs to trip him while simultaneously trapping the arm that would help him break the fall speaks of a high degree of malicious and psychopathic intent. That man should never play hockey again. I'd gladly watch him serve a long sentence for this behavior.

This is how you can tell who the real hockey fans are. It was 100% a clean hit. He had the puck when Clutterbuck went at him. You are legally allowed to finish your check even if the player releases the puck. Secondly it wasn't a slew foot at all. He was coming at him from the side and bracing for impact. There was absolutely nothing dirty or malicious about this play. Just like when you lay a great hip check on someone it can send them flying, that's all this is.
