Erik ten Hag calls on Manchester United fans to support Marcus Rashford

Erik ten Hag has a "lot of sympathy" for struggling Marcus Rashford and says everyone needs to get behind the misfiring Manchester United forward.
The 26-year-old produced a career-high 30 goals last season and was rewarded with a big-money new deal until 2028 over the summer, but his form has dropped off markedly since then.
Rashford has managed just eight goals in 40 appearances for his boyhood club, with his output criticised by onlookers and some fans booing him in last Sunday's FA Cup semi-final against Coventry.
The England international told the Players' Tribune in February that "if you back me, good" and "if you doubt me, even better", but he feels criticism has overstepped the mark.
Responding to a post on X that called the treatment of Rashford "absolutely disgusting", "cruel" and "abuse", he said: "I appreciate your support! It is abuse and has been for months. Enough is enough."
That post at 12.36am on Friday was put to his manager in the press conference around 13 hours later.

In any top clubs in Europe, underperforming players are replaced while in Man UTD who claim to be a top club (in history) is asking to suppor players who’ve been underperforming for years. Rashford is not a newly signed player who has yet to prove himself. Hes been at the club for now a decade but still expected to be coddled just because he has fragile feelings when comes to criticism towards his footballing performances.

Two factors at play here: United generally have a massive problem with getting rid of players, and Rashford has the media wrapped around his finger.

How much more support does he need? This has been going on for years...sheesh. What makes him more special than any other player as all players have dips in form but other players will still try and also have better body language. How can fans support a guy that shows no interest for the team, the badge or the fans? Look at he's body language, it's literally in 4k.

It’s so bizarre because you have one side of internet weirdo people obsessively criticising him, even though genuine criticism of his play is valid and is equivalent to what Maguire, Bruno etc have received. But then you have the people who then begin to obsessively defend him, which includes exaggerating some of his criticism too, which only elevates all of it into a ridiculous discourse 😂🤦‍♂️

We support Manchester United. We want what's best for the team. We will support Rashford, but when he's on the bench or out of the squad if that's needed. This is not a Rashford project where he gets to play until he picks his form meanwhile other players who deserve a chance are on the bench and his performance is beyond terrible on the pitch.

I'm an Arsenal fan but I bet I speak for Utd fans when all they want to see is effort on the pitch, put in 100% every game and I bet even if you lose they would have so much more patience with him. He jogs around the pitch like he doesn't care and gets paid a kings ransom so no wonder fans (Who pay a lot of money to turn up and watch lets not forget). Yeah extreme abuse is not acceptable but there is a reason behind it all. What does he expect to happen when he goes out on the piss and doesn't go to training and then jogs around looking like he has no care in the world in the next game, yet still gets his 200k what ever it is. Now the manager wants fans to support him...? No wonder footballers get a bad name.

Ten Hag has to support the supporters and keep under performaning players out, we always play in 9..Rashford(can't dribble, can't pass, can't score) and Casemiro(he walks for 90 minutes) out!! Mllions of people make sacrifices(money, time, health), respect foe the supporters!!! Best players on the pitch!!! ..and we let Sabitzer, Van De Beek and Alvaro Fernandez go!!!! What a shame!! I'm really sad for Hojlund, he never receive good balls, we take always 5 minutes to carry the ball forward..slow thinking players..this team is a disgrace 😭😭😭

How about we see some EFFORT ON THE PITCH FIRST ???? It’s a two way thing @manutd. A player on £375k PER WEEK who can’t be bothered to run. If he worked hard he would get support. Walking and jogging about the pitch he won’t. It’s that simple.

We as fans are fed up with him! So don’t expect us to support him ETH! The fans have given him more than support over the years, we have seen through him for what he is! An underachieving overpaid player that is a shadow of his former self. The reality is this. Rashford needs to go more for himself than anything, a fresh start could kickstart his career. He isn’t doing my club or himself any favours. Too many good players in the academy that deserve a chance over him.

Rashford looks conflicted. He needs to figure himself out. If he wants to remain in the Starting XI and with the club, he needs to be more focused. Something's off with him this season.

If the abuse Rashford has received was of a racist and discriminatory nature then rightfully so it can and should be condemned, but if it is not on any of those tones then he deserves what he is getting. His behaviour is a bad example to Garnacho, Hojlund and Mainoo, he has been awful not just this season but for the past few seasons and United fans do not need primadonnas or passengers at their club and he is of a few that needs the window. Rashford will never be remembered by Man United fans as one of the best. If he behaved himself, focused on his football and improved his performances, United fans would talk about him for the good and right reasons, but he screwed up and screwed up big time. He deserves no special treatment, he deserves no rewards for the unaceeptable levels of performances he has put in, he doesn't deserve the respect that the United fans would give him and he doesn't deserve to represent England. Rashford is a Specialist in Failure, he has had enough chances and its time to kick him out and not only those around him who have failed to represent the United badge and fans but also change the culture of where players are held to account and not just managers.

I support who i like Erik, and Marcus doesn't deserve support. Also, its the injury blame game again, you never heard Sir Alex do that. People keep saying Rashford was great last season but that just isn't true! Yes, his goal tally at the end of last season looked good but in terms of his performances, he certainly didn't have a brilliant season! He was poor in all but a couple of games before The World Cup, then played well for most of the next two months(mostly in cup games) and then went back to being poor again at the end of February '23 and has been getting worse and worse ever since. So he's been mostly-poor for 6 or 7 years and particularly terrible for 14 months and counting, yet people still try to pretend that he's a world-class superstar who's just going through a bad patch! Rashford is basically Federico Macheda with a great PR team and it's just ridiculous that United didn't sell him years ago and probably won't sell him for another year or two!
