On the midfield issues. Even at Ajax he didn't care about the midfield issues like that. He sees football slightly different. He believes the rest defense is more important, and those risks are already accounted for. He really doesn't care about the risks involved/shots conceded as long as it means more attacking threat with an extra man. He even admitted this on national tv back then. The problem is we don't have the players to be secure in areas that are tricky when playing with so many up front. It's not a coincidence we have the lowest shots - goal ratio in the league either. Give him time & the players to build out the system before we judge him. He's not been able to work in peace for a single day since joining us.

Correction: "one of the lowest shots conceded - goals conceded ratios in the league". If Rashford continued his form from last year or Rasmus scored a few more goals we'd literally be sitting in 3rd minimum. It's fine margins imo.

Amongst the contenders for the people most responsible for United failing to finish top 4 this season must be the United medical team. They assured Ten Hag that he would have two fit left backs come January. So, the Tottenham lad at left back, was sent back. United have had to play half a season without a left back. Must have impacted results.

Last season we played 62 games (all comps). Nobody can really argue that our best defence was Dalot, Varane, Martinez and Shaw. *On average we could have selected all 4 of them in 34 different games.* *34/62* This season we can only play a maximum of 52 games (if we beat Coventry). Shaw is out indefinitely and Martinez will at least miss a month. (At least 6 of the 10 possible remaining games). No idea yet on Varane. As of right now, of the 42 games we have played - we have been able to, on average, field Dalot, Varane, Martinez and Shaw *11 times* *11/42* - and with the injuries it’s likely to be *11/52* come the end of the season. That’s just our defence. The complete disarray in our defence this season has been heavily linked to the glaring tactical issues.

Biggest problem we have with injuries, is the mix of players. If we have to change a defender, it's not like for like. A lot of teams have backups that have same sort of traits, so will not effect playing style with them. We have a mix from 3 different managers with different styles.

My problem with saying he needs to go or stay is that the structure is not in place. Without that, who is interviewing the new manager and giving the direction of how we should play. I don't have a trust in the one who is already there. So, the solution needs to be gradual. Let him see out his contact by doing that, and you give the new people time to assess and decide the way forward.

I want him to stay. Everyone has been highlighting a multitude of factors contributing to the team's present predicament. But a lot ends up with throwing simplistic statements like 'we aren't different from other teams who are also having injury issues...' or 'he's delusional because of what he said during the presscon...'. These are just driven by emotion and aren't rooted on reality. I would love to see how our team's injury crisis compare with other teams while considering factors like the player's importance on that postition, the impact of missing him (on the style of play), the quality of his replacement (e.g. how they jive with the others on the field... shuffles in center back pairings as an example) and if it resulted to forcing other players to play a secondary position just to have a fit starting 11. What I can see from the 'optics' is that we don't always have the best players (or depth) on each position as compared to top teams. Regarding ETH's presscon... It's easy to see that he is avoiding saying things that will further destabilize the team. I support him for that as I see majority of the players are still fighting for their manager. He definitely knows what's wrong and that there is no instant solution during this season as it requires a lot of things to change (players, structure, mentality). Like most dynasties in team sports, there will be a lot of long ups and long downs (where we are right now). We got to be patient with building up the right pieces and I believe that ETH is one of them. P.S. Maybe I'm one of the few who wanted to see the weaknesses of this team when playing against different styles so as not to second guess which players should be replaced and which positions we need to prioritize in the next transfer period.

I agree about the press conference stuff, but the injuries and fitness are a different story. We are right up there (3rd I think) for the number of injuries and total number of games missed due to injury. Newcastle have had it quite a bit worse than us, but they are still only one place behind us. But it's not just about missing key players, it's the ones who aren't injured that worry me most. They are all fatigued and have been since last march. They gas out on 20 mins every single game. So why the hell do we try to play a style that requires huge amounts of energy? And why not tweak it if we're missing key players and are burnt out. Why not adapt to the situation? We've lost half our games this season!!! Why do we play such chaotic, frantic, flappy football? Why can't we manage games? These things fall at ten Hag's feet. And before you say it's down to the players not doing as they're told, I'd say they have tried - every single game this season - to follow the gameplan. The problem is how they're prepared. That's a management issue. Ten hag has failed this season.

Our squad needed open heart surgery, our players weren't and arent that good or are too injury prone. We lost that game against Chelsea but we lost Varane and Evans, those are two changes the manager probably didnt want to make. Next season should determine if we keep ETH. It's a bit too soon to be certain, but we might want a LW instead of a RW. Right wing we've currently got Garnacho, Antony, Amad and Bruno (if necessary). Left wing we've got Rashford, Garnacho and Mount (if necessary). If Antony shows more performances like against Liverpool and Chelsea, I think we might be good on the RW. Of course a lot depends on the possible transfer of Rashford, how well Antony does for the rest of the season and how highly EtH rates Amad.

Can we talk about the fact that in the 4 transfer windows since Ten Hags arrival we've had 10 players come in on a permanent deal. Two of them on a free transfers, one as a backup goalkeeper and Tyrel Malacia. So we've only made 6 real signings since his arrival. And we've spent roughly 410 million euros on those six. If we actually want to overhaul the squad we have got to scout for cheaper players. We can't pay an average of 70 million per player when we need a minimum of 6 players this window.

Ronaldo Brown asks what are the reasons for keeping Ten Hag, implying there are none, while completely ignoring the previous season and the progress that was made. 3rd place finish and 2 cup finals, winning one. On that alone, you can give him credit and then look at injuries and say yeah this has been a disaster but there were reasons for it. But he's shown what he can do when HIS players are all on the pitch. Another positive is the development of Mainoo and Garnacho under him. When you have 26 different back fours with zero playing consistency between them, how can anyone expect things like playing out from the back? It's probably a nightmare just picking the team, let alone getting that team to follow a plan.

In a dysfunctional work environment even the best people start making mistakes and fail. This is happening to ETH. He has not become a bad coach overnight. While he is rightly criticised the end of the season can be a rest for ETH , the club structure with Ineos and the team.

For me, I would keep EtH. He's had to navigate his way through so much more insanity in nearly 2 years than any other manager in the league for a start. Secondly, whilst I appreciate the issues with playing style (or lack thereof), the injuries to key players which have prohibited the proper execution of his 'game' alongside the rest of the injuries too has killed him and the team. Thirdly, and many will disagree with me for sure, he's not been backed/supported by competent people above. Yes, he got several players he wanted, but good leadership provides him with a structure to work within first and then tells him "no" when he asks for an Antony, Frenkie or Arnautovic. That same leadership fumbles around and delivers Casemiro for a King's ransom, despite being close to 31, on a 5 year deal for around £60-70m. I'd hive him another 2 years, let INEOS trim and shape the squad, build the structure for him and if he's still not the guy, fine, wish him the best in his future endeavours. UTFR ❤

My take is this. Under pressure, people revert to their worst habits. For that reason you train / work to establish a solid baseline, a best worst habit if you like. Structure, solidity, compactness. Ten hag hasn’t managed to do that in 18 months. Some of that is poor players / attitude, but it’s also on him. There are well known managers who have made their name on coming into a club and steadying the ship in a relatively short amount of time, often with lesser players fighting relegation, so it is possible and should be possible with our squad, however you feel about it.

You could look at last seasons squad and see De Gea, Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Maguire, Martial, Eriksen, Fred, Sancho, Weghorst, Donny, Elanga, McTominay, all played considerable game time, a laundry list of players that you look at and think either we can do better or they can do better. Ten Hag hasn’t handled the injuries well, but let’s look at why. He wants a hard working, high press team, that’s his philosophy. Can he do that with Evans and Maguire? No. Can he build out of the back with Evans and Maguire? No. Can he play possession football with them? No. What he can do is try to be defensively solid, defend the box, and hit teams on the break. That’s how the squad has been built, from Jose to now. And we’ve tried signing players to step away from that but the core of the squad is still that. We don’t have that many players who are good in defensive transitions, who are good at keeping the ball, who can spot passes and link up together. And it really hasn’t helped us that the few who can do that, in defense, Martinez and Shaw have been out most of the season, and in attack, Sancho has been gone most of the season, Weghorst could but we didn’t keep him, Martial could but he’s been out most of the season, Eriksen could but he’s not got the legs. This squad has needed gutting since Jose left. Ole made a good start but Woodward just wouldn’t let players go, or wouldn’t accept the financial loss, better to keep players on the books even if they don’t play. What Rangnick said was as true then as it is now, you don’t need glasses to see it, open heart surgery, this squad needs tearing down and building up again. And I think Ten Hag is the right manager to do that with. He’s proven he can manage the squad, he can motivate players, he makes good decisions, he works well with the youth, he’s everything we would be looking for if we sacked him.

PPL goong against ten hag just don't get it. Its normal the have bad season, pep, klopp, artetta and even SAF all have had bad seasons and only reason they are good now is because they were given the gime to turn that around. Why is ten hag the only one that doesnt get that time? When you are a top level team a bad seasn just means g nishing 3rd or 4th but whwn your curently just a top 4 team (which is what our squad is) then having a bad season is finishing 5th or 6th. Yall need to understand that. And thats despite him showing last year with a fully fit squad he over achieved and even won a cup. And this year hell likely make a final at the least too. We have had all our injuries in one place (defence) this year aswell, just imagine if we had concded 8 less goals as a result of having our best team. We would have won somewhere between 3-5 extra games and comfortably sitting in the top 4. A typical comment of someone who does not look behind the results. If there were any signs of progress instead of going backwards. If there were any signs of an identity or something that looked like a style of play i tend to agree with you. But, we are very lucky being 6th and we were lucky getting 3rd last season. And what you say about injuries : A week ago we were absolutely played off the park by Brentford. Brentford missed their entire back 4 , their captain and had made more changes than we had due to injuries in the back 4 this season. Before that game Brentford were sitting steady in 15th and we in 6th. And as i mentioned we were absolutely played off the park and the only ones really missing, was Martinez and Shaw. Another example : In our two first games this season when we had a full squad, both Tottenham and Wolves absolutely dominated us. But we managed to scrape an undeservedly win against Wolves. The ETH reign is not sustainable at all.

I want ETH to stay and get a chance with an actual structure in place and a new medical dept (Isn't our lead doc the guy Arsenal fired after they had too many injuries?). I always said we shouldn't judge him until the end of next season after he joined - it's a complete rebuild, there'll be downs as well as ups. In an ideal world, if we rotate players they should all be able to play and bring similar things to the team iinstead of "weakening" the line-up. However, he doesn't have the players to do so, we have players going back to LVG who are overpaid and overrated and not good enough for United. So give ETH a structure above him, get rid of some players and bring some in that fit the profile and give him next season to show he's worth extending his contract and giving ETH even more time. This season has had its problems no doubt. I believe the drop off from high performing players from last season (i.e. Rashford, Bruno, Casemiro, ) and of course injuries have had a big impact on creating style and fluidity. Last season he perhaps asked players to over perform and we maybe suffering from it this season. He is also getting used to the relentless demands of the Premier League. And United were the only team to play away from home twice in a row on the back back of the last international break, and all the way down in London for a late kick off to boot. The only other club was Luton, for two London derbies. City, Liverpool, Newcastle, and Chelsea got two home games and Spurs got both games in London(one at home, and one at West Ham). These kind of tactics(stats) by the PL go unnoticed but they are incessant throughout the season, even more so since the aborted Super League where UEFA have since accused Manchester United of being the ringleaders. Just because they don't adress it doesn't mean they can't see it. I think it's a lack of options and personnel. The gaping hole in midfield is a result of three things. First, the fact our DM is instructed to join in on the press and even in the attacking phase. Second, our lack of an athletic midfielder who is physically capable of tracking back all game long. Third, the fact our defenders lack the pace to defend a high line and as a result can't step forward and occupy the space left behind when our DM is pressing or attacking.

The only tactical solution to the problem, as well as the style that best suits the majority of the players, is dropping the high press altogether and defending in a mid/low block. I'm not as old as you, I'm 47 and Ron Atkinson was manager when I was a kid. From what I remember, nobody wanted him sacked, we played exciting but overall pretty unsuccessful football. When fergie came, those first few years were painful and divided the fans, but you could see he was changing the culture. Ten hag is not doing that. I'm sure he wants to but it's not working. I'd say last season, he took us back to 3rd which is decent but it not really an improvement from Ole. This season we've gone backwards again and back to where rangnick left us. When you consider he's spent £400m to go backwards, do you really see him lifting the prem trophy at any point in the future? Liking him and believing in him are 2 very different things.

@@mundolioknows6447 brilliant discussion. One point of contention though. I would argue he did improve us from Ole in his first season. Not in league position necessarily but in the full picture with a trophy as well. He inherited a team that had its lowest ever premier league points tally that finished 6th, that should not be left out of the discussion. He took that team, with 5 added players and about 4 players shipped off due to expiring contracts and finished with both a trophy and a champions league spot. So arguably, better than Oles first and second season with regards the full picture. Yes ole finished higher in the league but, never managed to win any silverware. Finishing one place lower with silverware is a better achievement imo, since that’s what the history books remember ultimately is the trophies.

@@niiadoteysackar3140 I wasn't arguing that Ole was better. I'm saying he returned us to the same level we were at. The rangnick season was obviously a complete disaster and we all know the players gave up. I'm not claiming this has happened again. But if you want to get into the nitty gritty of Ole Vs erik, I'd say Ole had auch harder job than ten hag. Ole finished 3rd in his first full season after the board got rid of 12 senior players and we brought in Maguire and AWB. Our entire list of attackers were : Rashford, martial and greenwood (until January when ighalo joined). Our Midfield was Fred, mctominay, matic and occasionally pogba. I think Ole did bloody well to get 3rd, considering Jose left us in a terrible state. Overall, Ole had far less a say in transfers, spent less, had Woodward as his boss, and a terrible morale to turn around. If the only thing that makes him less successful than ten hag is a poxy league cup then we have to question if that league cup was worth £400m. I'd rather have kept Ole and given him £400m to spend on players he chose. I just don't think we've progressed under ten hag ( and I do actually like ten hag ).

Given the so called 'Staggering Statistics" , aren't these things the major responsibility of the Manager and his coaching staff? The no of shots conceded & the space between defence and midfield - this is down to the manager's tactics and the shape/structure he puts out, and the instructions he gives to his players.

I read that INEOS will "choose the style of play". If they allow ten Hag to implement that style, I'm all for it. But then they have to give him the necessary tools. It will not work instantly, but if we can see hints of the new style in 6-8 months, I have no problem. But if there is no hint of the new style by the turn of the year, then I also have no problem in letting him go. On another note, I don't think the current crop is mentally tough to challenge for the title. They can have a few purple patches here and there, but challenging for the title is beyond them.

Absolutely spot on! These players lack any sort of mentality. The reason they didn't give up and drop their heads when they were 2 goals down early in the game is because this is happening at the earliest stage of a game. If they suddenly conceded a second goal with 15 minutes to go, they will drop their heads and give up ! They lack the mentality. Ten Hag also seems to lack game management. Happened against Brentford and repeated itself against Chelsea. Bottling it at such a late stage of the game consecutively says a lot about the players and Manager.

I would say it’s mostly the players fault - for example, Rashford, Mctominay, Bruno, Lindelof and a few others who can’t hack it. There is no doubt it was a poor recruitment year (Mount… Rasmus - I like him but this was the wrong time for this signing…). We needed a top striker, a top CB, another top ball playing midfielder and got none. Also, Ten Hag has been very frustrating this year and sometimes I feel like he’s sacking himself by constantly making the same mistakes that his previous peers have made, such as picking favourites, constantly picking players he ‘assumes’ cares, off mid game tactics and laughable post match interviews. The youngsters deserve the credit this year and maybe Ten Hag does for playing them. But constantly playing numpties who don’t suit systems, style of play or putting square pegs in round holes is becoming tiresome. Finally, the injury plague this year - whose fault is this? Does he overplay the same team, too much reliance on certain players? Are they getting trained too hard? Who knows… but having Varane, Martinez, shaw and Dalot last season regularly has clearly affected this season’s defence. When Johnny Evans has arguably been the best CB, it says a lot.

I'd say stay, only because I don't know who we get in, and I think it will keep the players more accountable. This season has been a shambles, and if he does get sacked, he shouldn't have any complaints. But imo, the priority has to be getting the right structure in place first.

I have been a manager for various jobs in the past, but I have never managed a football team before. However, give me £200 mill plus the money from player sales and I would be competing for the Premiership within just 2 seasons. The overall wage bill would be cut in half as well. I would build a new team around the three youngsters, Garnacho, Hojland, and Mainoo and I would keep Onana, Dalot, Shaw, Martinez and Mount. I would bring in about 7 players in the summer, with NO BIG NAMES (2x Center forwards, 3x Midfield and 3x Defenders EVERY player can play in multi positions.). In my second season, I would be hoping to bring up two or three of the youth that look incredible right now. The first team squad would be no bigger than 20 players, so in my 2nd season, I'd be only looking for two players just to complete the squad and seriously compete for every trophey. Rashford, Bruno, Mctominay, Casimero, Varane, AWS, Maguire, Lindeloff and Antony would all be sold and aim for £200 mill

Our Midfield isn't setup well to avoid cutback when we are caught on transitions. Casemiro can't cover ground and Mainoo is not quick either. A 4 2 3 1 formation can work with these players but for some reason the manager keeps the same formation. I don't know why he does it but there should be a reason behind. I think the reason is because he is stubborn.

both of you made solid points... maybe his press conferences are just delusional because he wants people to think that he's lost the plot... but it's the football that concerns me the most... we have no attack, no transition, no defense, and we are pretty easy to game plan against... EtH had two weeks to game plan for these current fixtures and yet we managed to regress instead of improve... He doesn't man-manage and that has hurt players (actual games lost) but also failure to develop with the squad... we have a great youth program and yet when senior players underperform consistently and young players don't even get a sniff of game time... and i'm not talking about injury time protecting a lead because we don't have those types of games... we are poor in so many areas and EtH seems to not care about making the correct substitutions to defend leads or hold onto draws... and that's concerning as well... ie... need a #6 bring on McTominay, need a #8 bring on McTominay, and need a #10 bring on McTominay, rather than giving Forson, McNeill, Amad, or any of the younger lads a run-out... i want United to be successful and if EtH can do it then great... but if not... then something needs to be done... because i am Tired of tenHag's United... Great show...

Last season, we had a very stable defense and our midfield was heavily pivoted on excellent players like Eriksen and Cssemiro. Since Eriksen got injured in January, our performances dipped on his return. Same for Lisandro Martinez. We were playing on the half way line all the time last season and we didnt see these turnovers. One thing for sure is Erik hates Tennis football kind of game. He sees all the problems but he csnt jettison cargoes in the middle of the sea. He needs to come to the shore and find time to fix things. In the season Arsenal lost Saliba, things got worse. Same for Van Dijk and same for Rodrigo. Our whole team has been decimated by injuries and trust rhythm counts a lot in team sport. We need fit players and get rid of the poison like Martial, rashford etc

Id keep him only if he makes improvements to his coaching team. Fergie did it all the time because he recognized the need to constantly adapt to the opposition with new ideas. If he brings in a better defensive coach it'd make a world of difference i believe

Stay for another year with a shortlist of replacement drawn up should the season to to shit. With the ongoing review taking both performance and results into account. Reasons: He has dealt very well with the big issues - Ronaldo, Sancho, Maguire, Greenwood, Rashford. Injuries have been horrendous, but also to players who we can not afford to lose (Shaw, Martinez, Mainoo, Hojlund) on top of that their back ups have also been out! If he gets to the FA Cup final there is no way that we should sack a manager who’s reached 3 cup finals in 2 years. It would be entitled as fuck to do so and I want to club to change from the Van Gaal days of sacking a manager after winning a trophy. Liverpool, Barcelona and Bayern will all be targeting new managers and will be better equipped to sell their vision. I’m not keen on bringing in a 3rd / 4th choice coach. There is too much changing. Get the structure of: Brailsford - Blanc Berrada Ashworth Wilcox Head of Recruitment Sort that out and announce the new 100,000 seater stadium to be finished in 2027. All of a sudden Utd have huge pull again and can target the best coach and players aged 17-23. Eric Ramsey leaving means Ineos can target and appoint another assistant coach to work under Ten Haag but be their eyes on the ground. I wouldn’t be surprised if Berrada and Wilcox head hunt Ben Wilkinson (Howard Wilkinson’s son) and City U18 coach who’s won 3 under 18s titles in a row. He could be the ‘young up and coming coach’ and an ‘Ineos man’ without changing the manager. Ten Haag is on 12 months notice to change the style of play and get within 10 - 12 points of top place. Allow him to get rid of 8 - 10 squad players, bring in 4-5 first team players and promote another 3-4 from the 18s / 21s. Only time will tell!

A well balanced discussion here. Ten Hag needs to go, but it would be sensible and strategic for him to see out his contract and stay for another year. Giving the next manager that comes in an environment that no other manager at United has had. Because an interim manager will still make atleast one signing in the summer without having the INEOS people in place as part of the long-term vision. This is just a huge waste of time, money and energy and just another opportunity for further scandal at the club. P.S we have seen many players suddenly get into form when they have one year left on thier contract, would be interesting to see how a manager does knowing he only has one year left also 👀
