Winter can be an amazing time of year to visit. There is deep snow in the subalpine zone and often trees drooping under the weight of the snow. It sometimes looks like a winter wonderland. Yet, if you are planning to enjoy the trails of Rocky Mountain National Park at this time of year, there are a few things you need to know. In this video I explain five basic rules of respect for exploring the park in the winter.

Great tips! We took your advice from an earlier video and got micro spikes for our trip in December. Wow, those were a game changer! We really appreciate all of the info you provide on here.

Great list, thank you! #1 and #2 are really pet peeves of mine. And we see the same issues in the Cameron Pass area!

I have to urinate often. I do go off-trail, but going back to a restroom is not an option when it’s 5-6 miles away. Every other creature urinates there as well, sometimes us older folks need to also. Don’t look down on us.

Please know that I understand that. The issue is not that folks have to go out in nature, but rather the concern is where they go. It needs to be done off trail and away from water sources.

I would of never even thought of the first couple of tips, coming from Ireland that would never seen snow like this The last tips should be universal no matter where you come from Thank you for your video, we are due to visit next week Cant wait , I'm actually counting down the days A little nervous though about road conditions driving from Denver up to Estes for my first time driving in America We have bought micro spikes for the planned bear lake hike, but should we rent snowshoes? or are they only necessary if we venture off the trail?

John Paul, you should not worry too much about the drive to Estes Park from the airport. The roads here are wide and driving in the US is generally easier and more forgiving than what you may be accustomed to. You can expect quite a bit of traffic initially, but as you get closer to Estes Park it will quiet down. As for snowshoes, I suggest that you rent a pair if there has been a big snowfall in the last few days, if there hasn’t been a big snowfall, then micro spikes will work just fine. I hope you have an amazing trip!

Glad you made it here safely despite the snow. That certainly makes driving a bit more challenging if you’re not accustomed to it. Glad you enjoyed my gallery. I hope you have a wonderful visit!

The first day I filmed it I was freezing, but that video ended up being out of focus. So, I filmed it again yesterday and dressed much more warmly and then it wasn't too bad. Glad you enjoyed the video.
