Over 30 years ago, when I was a child, I had a pet hamster in my bedroom. She had a small cage, cedar shavings and under nutritive food. I woke her up every day when I got home from school and let her free run my room. I snuggled and handled her constantly. We did not know better, I did not know better. I loved her so very much in the best way that I could, and with all of the information that I knew at the time. She lived past 4 years!! I have two Robos and a Syrian now with absolutely enormous habitats, dust-free and soft bedding, high protein food with variety of fresh fiber and healthy treats, fresh filtered water and respect for their natural rhythms. I still cannot guarantee their longevity. It is so random and out of our control. But we try our best to show them love, educate ourselves on the most comfortable, healthy and humane lifestyles and care for them and treat them with respect from start to finish. Your channel certainly helps keep us up-to-date with the latest, most sensible care tips. Thank you.

I don't have that much trouble letting go of my pets, as long as they live a good, long life, because I know I did everything I could to let them live the best life possible. Like you said, it's really just missing them. When they die earlier than expected or not peacefully is when it really hurts for me personally.

I have a friend who tries his hardest to ignore the age of his pets; ignore the fact that they won't be around forever. So when they do die, he's absolutely devastated and almost can't handle it. It stays with him for months and months. For me, I think about my pets deaths a lot (maybe too much?) and am fine with preparing myself for them passing when they're elderly. Unfortunately there are deaths you can't prepare for - my favourite rabbit died suddenly when he was a year old of an unknown cause - and that's devastating no matter what. Thanks for discussing this topic, Erin!

This video couldn't have come at a perfect time for me, as my own hamster passed away yesterday from illness. He was my 21st hamster and the first one I have had in 6 years. For every hamster death I always give them a proper burial and buy a small wooden box to put them in. I think the hardest part of having a hamster pass on is cleaning the cage and not having a hamster to put inside. I probably won't buy a hamster again for a little while as I am hoping to be going to grad school and I can't bare the idea of leaving a new hamster behind.

A Bullock I'm sorry for your loss. My second hamster (the first is still living thankfully) just died and it was so completely unexpected and broke me for a while, it was my first pet death as an adult and cleaning out the cage was unbearable. I'm in a similar situation, hoping to return to university next year, so I know I won't be getting another hamster anytime soon. For now I still have my little old lady, Willow, but I won't know what to do with myself when she's gone. 💕

I want to thank you for this, it's come at a rather poignant time for me. I recently lost my 20 month old dwarf hamster, Kasey, it was a bit of a shock as she was my youngest hamster, she hadn't aged much at all but she stopped eating as much. She had been to the vet 2 weeks prior and apart from a cyst that was being treated with antibiotics (and had disappeared by the time of her death) she was declared fit and healthy. I was incredibly saddened as she was my first pet death as an adult, the first one I found dead and the first one I handled myself. Willow, my other hamster, is the same age as Potassium. She is blind now, I'm pretty sure as her eyes have gone white/blue. I've also heard that can be a sign of a brain tumor. She's lost most of her weight and is looking a bit scruffy but she's got a massive appetite and is as friendly as ever. I've put all her essentials (food, water, nest, litter tray) down one end of her detolf so she doesn't have to travel far unless she wants to and moved her into my room so I can care for her (I couldn't fit two detolfs in my room, they were in the one next to me, but now I have only one it's easier. I spend most of my time in my room anyway, so I can monitor her and help her when she needs it. I feed her by hand every night and help her access her water multiple times a day, she prefers it when I feed her/give her water. (she's incredibly spoilt!) It's sad to watch, but I know both my hamsters have been spoilt and loved beyond words. Now I've lost Kasey, I'm dreading Willow's departure which I guess is coming soon (as you said with Po) but I'm expecting this one unlike Kasey's. My hamsters are my best friends. The last two years have been the most awful years as I became incredibly ill and disabled. I lost pretty much all my friends because of it, but my hamsters have kept me going and given me a reason to keep fighting. My heart broke when Kasey left and I'm not sure I can handle Willow going anytime soon (Kasey only died a few weeks ago) but I'm incredibly glad I had them in my life. My life will be empty without them. To quote Winnie the Pooh, "the smallest things take up the most room in our hearts."

for me, when my rats died, I spent a good two days crying. i'd just go to my room and think of how i couldve prevented it, and i get all the bad thoughts over and done with. then, in the following days is when i think about how good their life was, and cry some more. then after i finish my week of being a lil' ball of sadness, i start moving on.

Hi Erin, I just wanted to thank you for all of your videos, particularly this one. I remember first watching it a few months ago and tried to envision what it would be like to loose Emile (my Syrian hamster) and how to best prepare for it. Recently, within the blink of an eye, my little munchkin was gone. No matter how hard I tried to prepare for the inevitable, Emile was like a child to me, and his loss is still very difficult to cope with. However, thanks to you and others that post on your videos that have dealt with pet loss before, I know that Emile's passing will become bearable over time.... thanks again, and Season's Greetings/Happy New Year to you and your loved ones! xxx

He has just had a possible stroke so we are giving him palliative care, the vet agreed we should continue to care for him as he still eats and moves about (although much less) and mostly rests. My first ever pet (Lea the Hamster) died 2 months ago, aged 19 months. It was horrible. We went through palliative care for the last half year, she was in agonising pain, but would fight for her life, her passing was heart-breaking. Giving her morphine and treating her wounds daily, as well as giving her only baby food was really intense. I don't wish this on anybody. Now my second hamster - a boy - is NOW about 20 months old. I'm scared, though he is in decent health condition, but he seems in pain, and we started palliative care for him too. I'm not ready to go through anything like this again. Thank you for sharing your view on how to deal with your pets deaths! I hope Po will pass peacefully when the time comes, and I hope he will be around for his 2nd birthday! 💗

Always hard to see our little one get older. I just had to put my little dwarf down a couple weeks ago. I had just bought him his retirement cage, but decided it was time before he got to use it. I’m not sure of his age as he was a rescue. But he was clearly old, with arthritis, diminished use of his back legs, advanced cushings disease with frequent scent gland and malocclusion issues. I took good care of him, and spend probably $1,000 on him in the five months I had him to take care of his health problems and special needs. But when I found a tumor on him, I decided it was his time. I didn’t want him to suffer. It was hard, I loved that little man so much. I got some funky looks leaving the vets sobbing over that tiny box. I buried him in a potted plant with love, lot more than most hamsters get.

I've been owning mice over the last five years, and almost all of them have passed away (for one reason or another) at roughly a year, usually even less. Which is why it was such a huge surprise to me when most most recent mouse, Kala, lived to be well over 2! It made me happy to see her live such a long life and pass away so peacefully, because I was 100% prepared to loose her not long after her cagemate passed away from old age (both were around 1 at the time). But nope, she kept on trucking! She was never the friendliest mouse to me or her cagemates, but she clearly lived a long and very good life and I'm more happy for her than anything.

I agree with what you said on coping with pet deaths. The hardest deaths are the ones that don't show previous symptoms. One of my gerbils died suddenly (he was almost 4 years so he was a senior) but he never showed signs of aging. Like, ever. He jumped about 20-30 cm vertically like always, he chewed like he always did, ate very well, etc. When my mother told me he passed away I almost went on denial. I have video from literally two days before his death of him running around the sand playpen and jumping an being so healthy. It caught me by surprise.

My Syrian hamster, Posie, just turned 18 months old on the 3rd of September. I'm very happy that you made this video. It was very helpful! I am very attached to my hamster, so I'm sure her death will be hard for me, but she has lived a happy healthy life and I need to remember that! And who knows, she may live quite a while longer!(:

Your advice on preparing for their passing was very helpful ❤ My own hamster is around 20 months and he seems to have a tumor on his head. I feel so bad because I can't get him the help he needs, and I just haven't been able to stop crying. I really wish there was something I could do but I think I will just have to accept my poor Teddy Grahams is going to pass 😢

I lost both my hammies recently. Matilda on 14th August and my sweet gentle Campbell dwarf Wasabi on the 28th August. Matilda was 2 and Wasabi was 2 and a half. Po looks so much like my Wasabi did. I can relate to what you are going through with Po, it is heartbreaking watching them go downhill and old. xx

my experience with pet loss; my very first dog died a few months ago, very sudden. She was pretty young - 6,5 years. She was very ill and we did knew that it was coming so we got a new dog. Because they overlapst it did not feel like a replacement and it made the proses easier because the routine was still there. I would recommend for anyone to get a new pet when you have the suspision of your pet dieing, because i do feel like it could ease the pain. sorry for the mistakes in grammar and/or spelling
