THE M STEEL'S ARE JUST AS GOOD SOUND WISE BUT IF SOMEONE JUST STARTED PLAYING THEY WILL SHRED YOUR FINGERS AS IF YOUR PLAYING STRINGS MADE OF SAND PAPER AND THATS WHAT HAPPENED TO ME BUT NOW I'M FINE THAT I HAVE CALLUSES BUT THE M STEEL'S ARE MORE DURABLE AND RESISTANT TO WEAR

I tried the M Steels and did not care for them at all as they are suited for chugging metal rhythm players. I stay with the Cobalts as they are better for melodic lead metal.

The Cobalts are my favorites in 9-42. I also use D'Addario XL 9-42. Both brands are good. But Cobalts feel best, stay in tune the best, and are the brightest and punchiest.

I've used the M-Steels for a while now and for anyone wondering, they have a naturally cutting tone and for that reason are well suited to live settings. You can cut through without having to butcher your EQ. It's also worth mentioning that tuning stabilizes almost completely in about a day, quicker than most in my experience.

THE RECAP AT THE END WAS GREAT, I'VE USED ALL 3 SETS BUT NEVER REALIZED HOW MUCH BRIGHTER THE M STEEL STRINGS WERE AND I USE EMG'S ON ALL MY GUITARS BUT 1 BUT FOR NOW ON ITS M STEEL'S, I HAD BEEN USING BOTH M STEEL AND COBALT BECAUSE THEY BOTH HAVE INCREASED OUTPUT BUT WITH EMG'S I LIKE THE BRIGHTER TONE OF THE M STEEL STRINGS, THIS WAS THE BEST COMPARISON OF ALL THE STRING COMPARISON VIDEOS MADE RECENTLY(WEIRD HOW THEY ALL SEEMED TO HAPPEN WITHIN THE LAST MONTH) THANKS GUITAR WORLD AND PAUL

Regular is brightest. I just bought the Cobalts. They are darker than the D'aDario's they replaced but feel really good and intonant excellent. They stay tuned and are easier to bend than my former string.Used to use Slinkys years ago. May have to try the regular slinky again.

After using Daddario for years I went to regular slinky and loved them even though they go dead fast. They feel and play amazing. Switched to cobalts and I’m not really digging them as much. Gonna try Paradigm but I may go back to Slinky’s as well.

Excellent comparison, thanks! I've been using the regular Slinky .009 set for years and love it. But lately I've been feeling like the set's about flaccid (obviously, especially the high E string), so I've been thinking of switching to the .010 set. I'd love to know Paul's (and others') reason for using the .010 set.

Too bad they didn't bother to make a clear sound summary... To my ears the most noticable difference is in the attack. I'd go for cobalts for clean sounds and nickels for the overdrive. M-Steels are just too harsh unless you play some really wicked metal.

Hey thanks for the video, it’s awesome. I use some Cobalt on my 7 strings and normal slinky on my other guitars. I know it’s a major debate, but is it true that you don’t need to use Fast Fret on Cobalt? Is it also true that Fast Fret’s not good to use on any strings ? Thanks

I beg to differ. You can clearly hear the volume and brightness difference on the regular slinky. Notnto mention some strings have more low end, or a mid boost or are brighter in the regular slinky case. And in some cases some strings sound muddy and dull. They most certainly matter. Just as different types of picks produce a different tonality. Just because you cannot tell doesn't mean it's not true.

Hmm... I prefer the slightly more direct sounding treble of the cobalt over the sharper snappy sound of the stainless steel. However comparing the midwaves I'd have to say... yada yada...and ...yada. Guitarsnobs. The differences are so subtle (most of the time when I thought I heard a difference, it was so small it could might as well have been my imagination) that in real life an audiance will never hear them. What mathers to me the most is how they feel.
