[From "Kovacs Corner" on KZfaq.com] - From his TV special "Kovacs on Music", this is Ernie's videotaped remake of his comic sketch surrounding the Victor Herbert operetta "Naughty Marietta". It also probably qualfies as one of his lengendary productions which cost him a fortune to produce which is evident by the full in studio orchestra seen behind Ernie during his on-camera introduction. Appearing in the Janette McDonald role is Ernie's wife Edie Adams, while Ernie himself plays the Nelson Eddy role as the Canadian Mountie. Again he displays his fairly good baritone. As you may have seen from my previous posting of this sketch which was kinescoped during Ernie's summer replacement show for Sid Caesar [ Ernie Kovacs - "Naughty Marietta" / "Italian Street Song" (My Heart is Back in Napoli / Zing-Zing) ], the premise surrounds a new, inexperienced Italian TV station which bites off a little more than it can chew for it's first day's broadcast. It is supposedly produced at Italian TV station "WLAZE-TV", and shown over the TV network "Enna-B-C". Ernie takes a few good natured jabs at Italian stereotypes but it's probably a good thing that Tony Soprano wasn't born when this was televised! [ • Ernie Kovacs - "Naught... ]

This is like Mad Magazine coming to life. Ernie was so ahead of his time. What a shame that the vast majority of the current smartphone generation will never have heard of him. He was making viral and blooper clips 60 years before anyone.

Mel Brooks must have been watching. It's like the end of Blazing Saddles, and Madeline Kahn sings the same song in Young Frankenstein.

I saw commentaries on Ernie Kovak in Mad magazine. But in 57, at Los Angeles, I think, I saw some of his tv programs. With Pee Wee Hunt's dixie arrangements of famous classical melodies, I knew my personal humor critics on life where correct, before I knew about Dadaism. This is an excelent production laughing about pretencious formalities so common in stiff people thinking they were cultured! We have to revise all this works by great humorists. We did something similar in ¿1969? in Channel 8 in Mexico city, Las Damas Chinas, a tenor singing Una Furtiva Lacrima with propositions and direction of Alejandro Jodorowsky. Hope it was videotaped and we could see it again. I did a simple casettte recording, with very limited sound, but Im'll try to rescue it. For new happy laughs.

Comedy has improved somewhat since then, BUT Kovacs a big part in inspiring future comedy writers and performers to improve it.

Comedy has IMPROVED since then ? The only proof of that is that hilarious statement you made ! Ever hear of those ancient comedians called the Marx Brothers, Laurel and Hardy, Charlie Chaplin, Burns and Allen, Milton Berle, Jack Benny, among others ? Any ONE of them is worth more than all of these clowns of recent history

i see benny hill all over this clip. you know, i've seen several interviews with benny hill and he never gave kovacs any credit for being an influence on him. i never even thought of it until now. i wonder, is their similar styles of tv comedy a coincidence? doesn't seem likely. but why hasn't anyone pointed this out before?

@@netram28 ... good point. but both comedians were very inventive and original in their use of camera tricks and visuals in their comedy. they are very similar in that respect don't you think?

I Wish It Has A Real Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy in That KOVACS ON MUSIC SPECIAL From 1959 as Guest Stars Not When ERNIE KOVACS as Nelson Eddy and EDIE ADAMS As Jeanette MacDonald. How Dare You Do the Jeanette and Nelson Skit Without Their Permission!

Although I am a die-hard Nelson Eddy-Jeannette MacDonald fan, I must remark that Ms. Edie Adams' voice is comparable to MacDonald's. Not so for Ernie. Latter was a neighbor of my Mother in the late 1960s.
