What a great composition. I've only recently discovered Krenek, thanks to KZfaq, and his work is wonderful.

These quite interesting serial pieces are clearly in the Schoenberg's tradition: op. 19 of course,bi uta lso to a letter extent op. 11 and 23. While keeping the serial principles, Krenek will soon dramatically evolve i hos writing, creating a component of his own in serial music. These interesting point of his style after WW2 is full unknown. But let us come back to these pieces. A panist who would like to build up a coherent programme could for instance play these paieces with the three op. by s Schoenberg quoted above plus for instance the "Quaderno musicale..." by Dallapiccola, also a great serial piano piece. Ouside the seril world, the last preludes by Scriabin would make an attractive introduction.

WW2 really killed Modernism for the obvious reasons.

I met Krenek in my youth when I competed and performed in the Joanna Hodges International Piano Competition in Palm Desert, CA. I have to honestly admit I was never a fan of his compositions or most serial music but it was definitely part of my music education. And after listening to the 1 day junior rounds of Krenek I had a migraine. For 20th c I'll stick with Debussy, Ravel and Poulenc. Sorry but Krenek never moved me emotionally. But I'm not at all closed off to the Expressionists. I performed a great deal of Kurt Weill works and wrote a MM thesis on his opera Der Silbersee. I have also performed in a cast of Berg's Wozzeck for example. I also found Krenek personally a bit snobbish and cold when I met him. For his works I do prefer his jazzier Johnny spielt auf. I ran into him about a year before his death at the Purple Room where I was performing in Palm Springs where he lived the last decade or so of his life.
