Mary Pickford disparagingly referred to Ernst Lubitsch as a "director of doors, not people", but all directors have their quirks - David Fincher has his fridges; Tarantino his trunk shots - that reveal their own personal obsessions.
So what does Lubitsch's persistent use of doors tell us about his approach to storytelling, and the importance of off-screen space to great filmmaking?

Miriam Hopkins was not only a good friend of Ernst Lubitsch, she was his favorite Actress as he stated on many occasions. A real shame Miriam Hopkins turned down his offer for her to star in his "To Be or Not to Be".

I had to do some audience participation by pausing the video to read the quotes. I was richly rewarded. Thanks for your fascinating insights!

Great insight but poor audio, even with headphones it's inaudible at times. You should consider the option of recording your voice first and adding the visuals later. We don't really need to see your face, your ideas are much more interesting.

:-) I had to turn on the captions to understand some of it. But it was interesting.

Thank you for this very enjoyable and erudite disquisition! It made me want to re-examine the entire Lubitsch canon.

Thanks for the kind words - especially if it draws you closer to Lubitsch - that's the aim!

Mission: accomplished, my learned friend! I am going to enjoy a quadruple feature this week: Lady Windemere's Fan, Trouble in Paradise (my personal favorite), Ninotchka, and To Be or Not to Be.

dseanmat I'm yet to find a good quality version of Lady Windermere's Fan, so I haven't seen it - which is annoying as I love the play and am a big fan of Wilde. He and Lubitsch seem to me a match made in heaven. Additionally, I'd recommend Cluny Brown, if you haven't seen it. That's a film that needs to rediscovered.

Its so sad that people have forgotten this master, i have only seen trouble in paradise,to be or not to be and ninotchka but his style is so distinct that you know it when you see it, any recommendations ?

Sai Ashwin I’d definitely check out Cluny Brown and The Merry Widow, and also some of his silent films, if you can find them, The Student Prince and Lady Windermere’s Fan

American here. I kept thinking ‘Lubitch was interested in Dolls?’ Dolls? It took me 3 minutes of looking for dolls to realize he was saying DOORS. Same language, difft countries.

Miriam Hopkins was Lubitsch's favorite Actress. She starred in many of his films, and would have starred in more had she not turned them down.

Lubitsch was the Woody Allen of the beginning of cinema, or Woody Allen was the Lubitsch of our time. My wife and I always remember Lubitsch every time we open a bottle of wine to see a classic film, for us he was the best director of those times!

Absolutely! He's so criminally neglected nowadays, that I'm always glad to hear from another Lubitsch fan.

Thanks for this. Too bad I had to see Tarentino's name crop up. I was having such a nice day. I imagine you've read Weinstein's The Lubitsch Touch, and perhaps his other fine read, Saint Cinema.
