Beethovens 9th is the best of all. The clarity was nothing but a trend at that time, since everything had to appear to be just perfect, they were not allowed to show the misery of the humanity, except even that being staged. However, Beethoven was the first to depict the true ugliness of life in a very very sophisticated way, hence, less clarity sometimes.

That chord at 8:38 has always stuck with me for some reason. It feels so out of place yet perfectly fits. Feels so modern but also so unique. I don’t know why I love it so much

It's an Ebm7. Plus the chromaticism onto the 7th as the top note, you can't get more jazzy than that.

I would mention it functions as a suspention played on a downbeat, which is classic. For me the beauty is that we hear it with a modern ear as a minor-7 chord ("tonic"), yet Mozart deceives us and it turns out to be a suspention only. This ambiguity is intriguing and freeing our spirit somehow

Aside from suspensions, there are some passages where Mozart decides to let the bass line do its own thing regardless of the harmonies above, which of course results in what we now call jazz harmony. For example if you play a vii dim7 chord over the dominant you're generating V79 chord - Mozart does this a few times in KV 466.

Everyone: *reads the title 'Symphony in G minor'* expects to hear G minor a lot. Mozart: 20:10 - 20:17 EVERY PITCH OF THE CHROMATIC SCALE EXCEPT THE TONIC OF THE PIECE, G, THEN BY 20:56 IS IN C-SHARP MINOR, THE TONAL OPPOSITE OF G MINOR, BEFORE ARRIVING AT A DECEPTIVE CADENCE 21:06, THEN COMING ALL THE WAY BACK TO G MINOR 🤯

You can hear so much of this symphony in Beethoven's work. He probably had this one by the incomparable Mozart emblazoned in his brain.

I wouldn't disagree. Or you can argue great minds think alike. The questionable point is whether Beethoven and Mozart have met before. There is a lot speculation.

1st movement sounds serious in a minor key, 2nd movement sounds peaceful in a major key, 3rd movement sounds triumphant in a minor key and 4th movement sounds exciting in a minor key.

Seine letzten drei Symphonien ( Nr. 40, 41, 42 ) schrieb Mozart in rund 40 Tagen, aber es ist unbekannt, ob er sie jemals außerhalb seiner eigenen Vorstellung hörte, bzw. ob sie zu seinen Lebzeiten aufgeführt wurden! Die Autographen sind ohne Korrekturen, absolut perfekt! Und die Musik unbeschreiblich schön!!

Da er die Instrumentation geändert hat und zwei Klarinetten hinzugefügt hat würde ich sagen, dass es sehr vermutlich ist, dass er die Symphonien schon gehört hat.

Beethoven is always good and lovely music to hear. Symphony No. 40 in G minor, KV. 550 was written by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in 1788. It is sometimes referred to as the "Great G minor symphony", to distinguish it from the "Little G minor symphony", No. 25. The two are the only extant minor key symphonies Mozart wrote.

That development section of the 1st mvt is incredible, and without equal in all classical symphonic music. I can't understand the popular dismissal of Mozart as a symphonist. This is the most wonderful, profound symphony ever composed; in fact, each one of Mozart's last 6 symphonies are equal to the best efforts of Beethoven in this genre. I'll venture to say that all Mozart's symphonies from #19 on are well-crafted, accomplished works worthy of repeated listening.

As a kid I played the violin for this in orchestra, but a much simpler abridged version. Still it was extremely "Fast and Furious" for my tiny little fingers. I barely made it.

For the first movement, why is the higher horn labelled Si-flat and then B alto? Is B alto a shorthand for Bb alto, since B-natural horns weren’t made*? * Source: 5 seconds of reading Wikipedia

"B alto" is the german name of the high b-flat horn and "Corno in Si b" is the itialian name.

But who was the conductor? Personally, I did not like the interpretation, but maybe it's only the flat recording, or else it's my computer, not the ideal. Usually I listen to CDs on a stereo system.... Anyway, the music is so amazing. When I first heard the finale conducted by Otto Klemperer (I was about15), I thought it was the personification of the inexorability of destiny, even more than Beethoven's fifth symphony. Beethoven is dramatic, Mozart is tragic and fatal like an ancient Greek tragedy. He ends the symphony in G minor, does not convert to G major as Haydn and Beethoven would have optimistically done. But Mozart soon recovers: in fact this symphony is immediately followed by the glorious and triumphant C major of the Jupiter Symphonie......
