Brilliant racing, he was not almost caught on the climb - he had a lead of 4mins and 30 secs when he reached the summit, sure its a big loss considering he had 25min lead at the foot of the climb but its not almost caught, its over 4mins. Fantastic amazing effort and legendary win in my book.

Why hasn't this video got more views? He looks huge on his bicycle, and still he beat Marco Pantani on Ventoux... It shows that with a strong will and intelligence (he calculated how big a time gap he had to make at the foot of the Ventoux in order to beat the climbers) everything is possible

197 cm, mainly a flat trial specialist... He made a miracle to keep 4'30" advantage!

Today Wout Van Aert won a similar stage, 1m 90, TT specialist, won the Ventoux stage before a bunch of favorites.

Lol He had a lead of about 30mins at the start of the climb and he saved only a couple of minutes on top of Ventoux;-) But hats off! I`ve climbed Mont Ventoux myself and I know it`s a fucking beast of a climb. And to win that stage as a non-climber is just great...

That was the point, in the peloton they were sure to catch this 2 meters-tall guy before finishing the climb or shortly after because of his fatigue, but he proved them wrong.

I was an avid Tour de France and Spring Classics fan when Eros Poli so spectacularly won this Mother of All Mountain Stages. I was so impressed and so touched that I then and there decided that one day I myself would climb the Mont Ventoux. I did in 2002 ... Well, I rode the first 6 kms with two (2!) breaks at the base of the climb and had to WALK the remaining 15 kms - but I made it, and to this day I am so proud of myself that I did it. I am NOT a sports person, I don't do any sports, so the fact that I climbed that beast and lived to tell the tale is actually beyond belief. @IamNotHere @coopisgod13: Yes, Eros Poli was a very clever racer. He was good at "cycle math" so he was the "captain" of the runt racers every day keeping score of how much time the runt could to lose and still be in the race the next day. He used those skills to calculate how to win this stage bc with his height and weight he was really not built to ride the Tour or the Classics.

he build up a 20+ minute advantage before the climb because he knew he sucked at climbing and he was almost caught before the top of the climb, thats how bad he was at climbing but good for him i love to see the guys who no one expects to win a stage win one of the best performances ever in the tour i tip my hat to you if i had one

Real nice guy! This guy and Cipollini! We called them women magnets, as teamates it was impossible to go out with them without having women run after them. Magic!
