Eros wanted to be loved as a man and not as a god. Would Psyche see him in his divine form, she would probably fear him or gone mad, humans were after all little more than toys for the gods in greek religion and mythology. But love transcends everything, even the condition of gods and mortals, she was invested enough in her love than rather than going mad, she recognized her mistake and felt terribly ashamed about it. It's one of my favorite stories and I can see the influence that had in the development of romantic literature across time, from the Medieval Romance to Shakespeare to Oscar Wilde to Shoujo manga.

I know many stories in mythology have various retellings, but from the general consensus I get, I really feel for Psyche in all accounts of this story. First of all, everyone beginning to worship her instead of Aphrodite, those were actions beyond her control. As far as I know, she never asked to be worshiped as a goddess; in fact, she seemed to hate it, since everyone else's reactions to her extraordinary beauty was what made her very lonely and isolated. And Aphrodite gets mad at Psyche instead of everyone else? I think that's just unfair. Then when Eros gets involved with Psyche, it's interesting the few different accounts I hear of his agency in the story. In one, he pricked himself with his own arrow and fell in love with her; in another, he fell in love with her naturally and pricked himself with his own arrow to ensure he would stay in love with her. Also, I've often questioned, whatever happened to that winged serpent monster who was supposed to marry Psyche in Apollo's prophecy? In one version, it was just a prophecy, but nothing ever came of it, but in a few others I heard, it was Apollo basically lying through his teeth, describing Eros as a hideous monster to get revenge on Eros for making him fall unrequitedly in love with the nymph Daphne. In the version where the prophecy went nowhere, I kinda envision the idea of there actually being a winged serpent monster who comes after Eros and Psyche when he didn't get his promised bride, I think that would make for an interesting sequel. LOL But in the other account, of Apollo lying about Eros, that honestly makes more sense. As far as Psyche mistrusting Eros, with or without her sisters planting seeds of doubt in her mind, I kinda don't blame Psyche for being suspicious of Eros at first. First off, she was prophesied to marry a monster, I'd still be looking for the monster after being with an invisible Eros for a while, because two, Eros didn't show his face to her and didn't explain at first why, so yeah, I'd be suspicious, too. LOL Though to defend Eros a little, I would advise that Psyche tell Eros about the prophecy Apollo made about him so maybe they could clear that up at least...? But even then, I'd still want my lover to show his face. Funny how Eros says love cannot exist without trust, and yet he doesn't trust her to accept him as he is. Does this sound like a double standard to anyone else? I mean, I can't blame Eros for being hurt by the lack of trust from Psyche, since he didn't know about the prophecy (as far as I know), but yeah, even then, still kind of a double standard. Circling back around to Eros' agency in the story, a few accounts I've heard was that he stayed away from Psyche until he couldn't bear it anymore and flew back to her, especially after he heard about all she went through to try getting him back. In another, I heard that he secretly aided her in her labors, once again showing up to her as an invisible voice, which I honestly really like; it would show that Psyche didn't have to do all the work in mending the relationship. LOL And in the version where Psyche did do all the work...um, yeah, speaking from personal experience of being in one-sided relationships where it looked like it was all on me to make things work, yeah, not a fan of this version of the story. LOL I can at least appreciate that Eros eventually did return to Psyche of his own accord, even though I'm still a bit iffy about him, maybe they were able to make things work and straighten everything out afterward, but...eh, I donno, Eros and Psyche still don't sound like the healthiest romance, but this is just my take on it. XD
@elisa4620
@elisa4620 4 жыл бұрын
Yep. I agree with what you said. There is definitely a lot of double standards in this story. But the Gods of Greek mythology are often hypocrites. There is a lot of communication issues between the two too. Hopefully, this whole mess taught them how to properly talk and to be more honest and trusting.
@AishaVonFossen
@AishaVonFossen 4 жыл бұрын
@@elisa4620 Hey, thanks for stopping by! Yeah, I hope this experience taught both Eros and Psyche to be better communicators to each other as well. :) If they're one of the only romantic couples in Greek mythology who got a happy ending, I should hope they straightened things out. LOL

@@KG-ds2fj no but she's still one of the most vengeful goddess who can and will make your life hell, and she has Eros at her disposal who can make you madly in love with anyone he wants which in my opinion if you really think about it is terrifying, or he can make someone else fall madly in love with YOU which can turn out horrible (if he does it Apollo your probably gonna end a plant , if it's Zues then Hera's after you, and even if it's not any of the gods it can still turn out horrible)

@@KG-ds2fj I never said I didn't hate her...? All the Greek gods are mega jerks, including her. If your not scared of her then that's fine! But having a goddess mad at you isn't a good idea no matter who she is or what your opinion of her is, I'm not trying to start on argument or anything btw

k2d10tode11 the gods are aspects of the human condition. Eros is the impulse to romantic or sexual love; so he can't keep from being impulsive. Aphrodite, well I imagine she's rhe same sexual impulse as her son but from a feminine (aphrodisiac) perspective. I haven't worked out whether jealousy really has to be a part of sexual impulsiveness. Thoughts on that, anyone?

Rosalina& and Luma thanks, I needed that and it reminded me: I forgot Aphrodite's the goddess of beauty not only love, and Psyche's beauty was an actual threat to her. Beauty and sex in the same package - wow! And personified in a deity who has no impulse control - danger! No way around it, jealousy comes with the territory.

Finally the KZfaq trending page actually gives attention to an interesting KZfaq channel. I love Mythology. You should do a video on Epona the Goddess of Fertility and Horses in Celtic Mythology, as a huge fan of Folk Metal I love Celtic Mythology.
