In recent years, North East India has experienced a disturbing trend of erratic rainfall patterns, leading to devastating consequences including floods and droughts. Climate change is exacerbating these variations, presenting unprecedented challenges to the region's ecosystems and communities.
Our new mini-series, "Alarming Variations," delves into the intricate connections between climate change and the erratic rainfall phenomena in northeastern India.
Explore the multifaceted impacts of climate change on this ecologically diverse region. Through expert analysis and on-the-ground reporting, we will unravel the complexities of how shifting weather patterns are reshaping the landscape and livelihoods of those in the Northeast.

Cherrapunji also has a problem with the sub strata of soil, so it can’t retain much water, it all either leeches into the limestone rocks or goes off as surface run off

I live in the US, and I follow this channel ALL the time! I believe what happens in other countries around the world also directly or indirectly effects us all. No one should put their heads in the sand. Tho I am an older woman..71… and do not live in India, I hope for the people of India, there will be solutions to help them with their water issues. People all over this continent have some sort of good/bad relationship with water. Back in the 80’s, my husband then (now x) said there will be wars over water. Very intelligent man. I wonder if there is a way to CAPTURE the heavy rainfall when it comes down so hard that it causes flooding? There is so much in the way of Computer technology…wouldn’t you think there would be a way to divert all of this rainfall into safe and clean containers for future use? I’m not a scientist…but there’s got to be some genius out there..even a high school kid…who could come up with a solution? Just thinking… Meanwhile…keep up the great work of informing people..all around the world. Thank you! Mary🇺🇸🙏🥰❤️👍

Never thought that I would hear about Cheerapunji drying up. Paying close attention, extreme weather and dryness can be seen in almost all states now. And worldwide, too. More important question - what can citizens do collectively?

It always makes me really sad when I see how the soil, mountains, trees, water, air, rainfall, and temperature are all being affected. We are destroying our ecosystem, and the worst part is that we are just the cause of it all.

it's really sad to see that industrialization is more emphasized rather than Health, well being of the people. No SDG commitments. plus it is the response of the people too. the beautiful roads of Meghalaya are gone the fields in Assam, replaced by Buildings ever decreasing Air quality I'm confused with how Policies are made.

Northeadt India after all the infrastructure development will turn into a Dry Barren desert if all the states government doesn't take up necessary actions to protect the environment. Northeast India manority of the population are Agriculture irrespective of the Plain & Hilly areas . The hily people had to rely on the age old primitive method of slashing and burning the forest in order to cleared it and improved the fertility of the area for Jhum cultivation. The disastrous outcome of such horendous practice led to the depletion of forest area and along with it comes enless issue like Soil erosion, Floods,Landslides during monnson and a terrible drough dyring the summer. If you explored the hilly areas of Northeast India during the winter youll only see deserted hills and dry up rivers and in the summer there is the Dust pollution and drought that contribute to the rising Air Pollution as well. All the States Government of Northeast from centail to the village level should encoutaged water harvesting as priorities and Top level along with Reforestation of the desert hills and along the river banks. The government should replicate the idea of Water harvesting from Rajasthan and Nagpur where from the village level a communtiy based oroject was run to build huge Water reservoirs to store the monsoon rains so that even during the rains they dont face the terible drought and ground water harvesting also doesnt dry up in the summers. Many are glad about the infrastructural development happening in the Northeast but none seems to care or foresee the humoungous environmental and ecological nefative impact it can bring upon the region considering how the people are still naive and unaware about the consequences and hiw they unknowingly are contributing to the degradation of environment thriugy their olde age practice and through the numerous infrastructural development happening rapidly. The government and concernibg authorities should start working along with the infrastructural debelopmen works on the ecological and environment protection and Reforestation the barren desert hills and dry river beds.
