In WW2, during the Ardennes offensive, Germany would employ deceptive tactics to gain an advantage over the Allies. One of the ways they would attempt to accomplish this goal would be to disguise Panthers as American M10 tank destroyers.

The Allies also used captured German tanks - trucks - half tracks. One U.S. unit these vehicles was call the Rag Tag Unit. The U.S, painted the U.S. white star on the German vehicles they captured.

'The Tanks are Coming' is a great B movie from 1951. In it they use a modified M10 in place of German tanks. This works surprisingly well given its general resemblance to the Panther. Overall, the movie is pretty good. The acting is not great, and the plot is a little thin, but it does have spirit and the tank battles are some of the best I've seen. One of particular note is filmed in the bed of stream. I don't recall any other movie depicting a battle in a stream. What really hits home for me is that the movie was partly filmed on Ft. Knox, KY and I actually recognized the stream in which the battle took place. Worth a watch if you've got some beer and pizza to keep you company.

@@huiyinghong3073It depends on your views as to what is humane treatment of your fellow human beings. It is a stance to be ruthless but you live by being ruthless you can also die when the enemy uses ruthless tactics against your stubbon defence. During WW2 the rules of war, the Hague and the Geneva convention were not observed by the Japanese and on the eastern front there was no observance of the Hague convention or the Geneva convention by both the Soviets and the Germans. Who did the Germans prefer to surrender to? the Western allies. The Japanese Bushido code was brutal to enemy and its civilian populations as well as its own civil population which was to commit suicide or die in futile military actions for little or no gain. With the flame thrower tanks used by the western allies against the German's, efforts were made to let the defenders retreat or surrender rather than use this lethal weapon. Remember that Germany introduced both gas warfare and flame throwers in WW1 and used flamethrowers in WW2. But if they were not going to retreat or surrender then it was deployed with its horrific demise on those stoic defenders, better that than the needless death of your own troops attempting to take the strong point by other means. You have to be carefull changing into an enemy uniform as you may get fired upon by your own side with physical and mortal consequences. .

@@huiyinghong3073 LOLOL...well from a communists point of view, You may be right because they refuse to abide by the Geneva convention's rules of war. However civilized countries observe the rules of war...the Japanese refused to abide by the Geneva convention's rules of war...Many of their leaders paid the Ultimate price for failure to do so. As did many of Hitler's Henchmen.

Yes you can assume the enemy's markings and uniform but if you are caught you have no defence under the Hague convention on the rules governing war. If caught you can be summarily shot as a spy or illegal combatant. Given that both sides took this risk on a limited basis in WW2, it was only used in espionage acts or resistance groups. Generally the ruse only works for a very short time and the offending vehicle or vessel generally came under fire.

It was the ALLIES that leveled the Abbey at Monte Casino. Germans only took up positions within once it was leveled by the ALLIES. It was Field Marshal vom Rundstedt during the Market Garden operation that allowed the Brits 3 hours cease fire to evacuate their wounded. No side has clean hands in war , but the stereotype of the vicious Hun is jist propagandized Western bullshit.

No inanimate object *_is_* a crime of any kind. However people associated with the use of some things, might be criminals. Therefor the Ersatz M10 is not a crime, but the occupants of _any_ vehicle masking it's nationality, might criminals if they take it into battle.

Yes, Ersatz M10 Panthers in disguise is a war crime in the same way German soldiers dressed as U.S solders and MP"s during the Battle of the Bulge were summerly shot on discovery. This form of deceit is outlined as a crime in the Hauge convention as well as many other war doctrines outlining the behavior between combatants. This is why it is outlined that it is permissible to use an enemy's weapons against said enemy as long as they (the vehicles) are remarked with the capturing combatants' national markings. The Germans used a lot of captured vehicles and marked them with Iron Crosses. The Allies similarly remarked vehicles. in fact, one US Divion (the 83rd Infantry Division) labeled, The Rag-Tag Circus was mainly made up of captured German vehicles re-painted O.D. Green with White US stars.
