Escape interference: How to use an antenna pre-selector for crystal clear radio

In this video, we're going to talk about how to use an antenna pre-selector to reduce interference and improve your radio reception.
An antenna pre-selector is a device that allows you to choose which radio frequencies to receive, based on the type of interference is present. This can be very useful if there's a lot of interference in your area, or if you just want to improve your radio signal quality. By using an antenna pre-selector, you can greatly reduce the amount of interference in your radio signal, making it easier to receive clear radio transmissions. We take a look at the MFJ 1040C Pre-Selector and put it on the Rigol Spectrum Analyzer. We'll take a close look at how the pre-selector works, and what it is doing to deaden unwanted signal from the radio.

Looking at the schematic, the Gain Control is a 1k pot in series with the antenna, just before the Attenuator which are fixed resistors. The band and tune adjustments are an LC network just before the RF amp.

Takes me back to early 70's where my first radio was a kit Codar Super Clipper receiver to which I added the matching Codar Pre-Selector and a Codar Q-Multiplier. Maybe you could install a small epicyclic reduction drive on the TUNE shaft.

Nice video Jim. Since it has 2 Radio inputs, seems like it should have 2 Relay/PTT inputs. I guess you have to switch connectors in the back if you want to transmit with the other radio?

Hey Tom! There are two buttons the front, one to switch antenna connections, and one to switch radio connections. There is a delay adjustment as well, so you can set the T/R delay, if you're not using a wired PTT relay. I used it that way, and it seemed to work ok. This has literally been sitting in the parts bin for 3 years now.

I wonder if there is enough isolation to use an SDR as one receiver and use the antenna switch to switch to the transmitter? ie use the SDR as your main receiver. 73

I'd assume so? I didn't really test how much isolation, I was more demoing the bandpass function, which is it's main jam. I honestly didn't even remember it did 2x2 . I haven't used it in several years.

How does this compare to the BHI ParaEQ ParaPro EQ20B-DSP with Bluetooth? I have one coming from "across the pond". I want to use it with my Xiegu G90 especially when I'm portable (EMCOMM and POTA).

I couldn't tell you, as I don't have that Dingus. This is a adjustable notch rf input filter for your signal, and by the "ParaEQ" part of that name, that sounds like an audio output shaper. Apples and Oranges there.
