As Libya descends further into civil war and lawlessness, migrants from Africa and the Middle East continue to journey to the country’s coast in search of smugglers to take them across the Mediterranean Sea and into Europe.
Search and rescue operations by Libya’s coast guard are restricted due to diminishing resources, and have to contend with dangerous gangs of armed traffickers.
Those rescued at sea by the coast guard are brought to detention centers, where they face deplorable conditions and are forced to remain for long periods of time. In some instances, migrants are detained by militias in unofficial prisons outside of government control.
In the final part of our series, VICE News travels to Tripoli to detail the hardships of migrant communities and speaks to a survivor of the journey to Europe who talks of the true cost and terrible tragedy of crossing the Mediterranean Sea.

Blame NATO and especially USA for destroying Gadaffis government causing flock of immigrants to Europe, Libya used to be a stable country until they ruined it. Now most African Libyans are fleeing from rebel fighters who fought to overthrow gaddafi. Hence ethnic cleansing and racism occurs of the Libyan Africans.

Lord Moriarty007 why not? Libya was stable and radical islamist was supressed under his rule. Compared to now there's a lot of radical Libyan Islamist fighting for Isis thanks to Mr Obama. Hence Gaddafi created nothing from a prosperous country. Now, its instability and chaos. Fuck proxy wars for natural resources;

John Picondo Hey I totally get what your saying and agree with you but when Gaddafi started killing his people. The west intervened and did nothing after Gaddafi is gone. NATO doesn't have the manpower to fix north Africa. They couldn't keep Iraq stable enough.The Arab Spring has failed.

Lord Moriarty007 Those are fabricated, propaganda and lies made by the west to convince people to get Libya's natural resources. They are always hungry for it like for instance Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya of course and now Syria. Don't you see the correlation at all? In this situation in Libya, Gaddafi pissed off the bankers in the West, as he introduced the Gold Dinar currency which would collapse the dollar currency. Please have a look at this www.thenewamerican.com/economy/markets/item/4630-gadhafi-s-gold-money-plan-would-have-devastated-dollar www.finalcall.com/artman/publish/World_News_3/article_7886.shtml

^Obviously NATO intervened for national interests but it's not a lie that Gaddafi's forces committed many war crimes. Also NATO intervened after the civil war started, they were not the cause of the civil war:

I understand the motivations of those migrants, but there's an economic crisi happening in most countries in Europe. There aren't even enough jobs for the local population. In Spain there's about 50% youth unemployment, in Greece it is even worse. Only doctors, engineers and other academics have realistic prospects of finding a job.

8:04 *Very interesting.* It seems that the traffickers intentionally send them to their deaths, probably because if they were actually successful at bringing people alive to Europe it would bring a lot more attention on their activities. They probably make sure one in twenty boats actually reach the continent so that people keep coming to them. I think the reason why these people are treated like that is that they are considered like cowards and people who flee the harshness that they themselves have to withstand, and so people discharge their hatred and feelings of injustice on them, because who's going to stop them anyways ? As long as they die and don't reach the continent, nobody will care about it. These images of people traveling across an ocean in a leaking inflatable boat with dead people on board, and dead bodies floating in the see are some of the most horrific and sad I have seen in months.

The comments here! This is a documentary about people's struggles! If your not here to be informed or empathise or you don't understand this, then don't watch vice?! Another point why is everyone complaining about these people coming to Europe? The title says "libyas migrant jails" last time I checked Libya is not in Europe. And most of the people who get to Europe (which isn't a lot) go to work jobs Europeans especially English people don't want so stop complaining!
@Caneggia12
@Caneggia12 9 жыл бұрын
Noah The Creator "which isn't a lot" you should check your facts before shitposting.Btw: them working in European countries is actually bad for everyone: they have no knowledge of working rights so they have no problem getting ridiculous untaxed pays by people who only exploit them, thus giving criminal employers a higher gear on the labor market. Poor European people have to lower their standards to even get a miserable-unprotected-unrecognized job and legal employers find themselves forced to lower wages to keep up with the ongoing market, which nowadays is going down-hill (Europe is going through an economic crisis in case you didn't read a newspaper or watched some REAL news in the last, I don't know, 10 years). If they come here looking for work is fine for me, but don't feed the criminals and pay your taxes. Then people wonder why they don't integrate into society: you don't cross the sea and magically become an European citizen, you have to work for that. If you don't, you're an illegal immigrant so either you get sent back or you enjoy your vacation in camps, which should still be better than going back since there's war back home, right? Better in a jail than in a coffin I would say.

@Caneggia12
@Caneggia12 9 жыл бұрын
StopMinecraftVIOLENCE You are implying that the only reason they come here is for an education and for a job, which is not the truth my friend. In underdeveloped countries you don't need academic awards to get a job, unlike the reality of first world countries where at least a high school diploma is mandatory. I worked for 3 years in Libya and all my African coworkers hardly even went to elementary school, but they knew their jobs well (I was working in construction and large machines btw). These countries are actually the ones that mostly need workers since there's really A LOT to do, but young people prefer to come here because they have been brainwashed by the media into thinking that here everything is given and people will welcome them with open arms and a 100€ bill. You know what happened to our company? The government cut all our financial relief because we were a "foreign company" (even though 60% of our staff was local) and we were forced to move, then they assigned the company to some Lebanese executives and in a matter of 4 months the whole thing got shut down due to inoperativeness, thus leaving 15 African well trained workers, and friends, unemployed, and me.. I had to go back to MY MOM in ITALY because I didn't have a job AGAIN. Now I'm using this opportunity to study electrical engineering at university (which is almost free here, but free apparently isn't enough for these immigrants, since there's just one African guy in all the faculty and hundreds and hundreds in the streets doing absolutely nothing).

Everyone that has taken this route advises all not to do it. Even the ones that successfully got to Europe, say it is not worth it. Other documenteries of returnees to their homeland say its not worth and they regret going in the first place. Some people need to flee for their life, but there are many neighbouring countries they can safely access that would not put their lives in danger. Imagine spending over $2k trying to cross, get deported, IOM then resettles the person with less that $200 and they doing better with 10% of what they initially lost. Lots of awareness is necessary, as well as job opportunities

That's not the case, but even if that was true there's nothing wrong with black Libyans fighting for Gadaffi. You could worship who you wanted under Gadaffi, you didn't have random militias cutting off your hand under Gadaffi, and you didn't have this sh*# storm either. Things weren't perfect but there's no point in history that Africa or the Middle East was remotely civilized for any decent length. This is what happens when the West uses groups like ISIS to topple dictators that they don't like anymore. They tried it in Syria too and if it wasn't for the Russians, all the Christians, Alwaites, and non-radical muslims in Western Syria would have been slaughtered and the country would be the same as Libya.

I'm not a big conspiracy theorist, but if the E.U were able to take over the government in these nations, if they were able to stabilize them. At the same time, U.S does the same with Mexico and Central America. At which point, the U.S and the E.U will seem like gods to the world, they unite and ask east Asia to join, well there you got a new world order that most people wouldn't think is bad. That's where this is headed, all of these immigration problems can't continue, if they want to fix it, they'll have to fix it at the source, the poor nations corrupt government. Thus, creating the perfect recipe for a new world order.

I feel ashemed to be a EU citizen. We have all what's needed, but we ignore the children that are drowning every day. Children that not choose to be on their way to us. We could help but rather we swim in the same sea on our holiday. On the other side, close but still far away.

You didn't make those children, nor are you their protector. You didn't bring a child into a dangerous world without the necessary provisions. You didn't needlessly risk their lives, for your own greedy ambitions.

It's amazing how Billions of people are still praying to a so called GOD invented by story tellers. Killing and destroying in the name of a fairytale that has never existed.
