Join us as we adventure off the beaten path with the Escapod off-road teardrop trailer. This truly is one of the best teardrop trailers on the market. Throughout this off road trailer walkthrough we will highlight the many features the Escapod trailer boasts. High clearance, galley kitchen, rooftop tent, camp awning, 21 gallon water tank, queen bed, and the list goes on and on.
The Escapod is more than just an offroad overland trailer. It is comfortable, accommodating for small families, and has an amazing aesthetic inside and out. This trailer maintains the classic wood design in the cabin from the era of teardrops we all are nostalgic for. But, this camper pushes the limits and adds features you won't find on any other small camper trailers in 2021. In the galley you will find doors that convert into tables and cutting boards. You will find fenders that you can stand on and a roof that can support tents, bikes, and all your gear.

My very best childhood memories were in a truck camper, exploring the US and Canada with 5 kids and two parents. Dad got laid off, best thing he ever did was buy that thing and take us all over. Successfully started his own company after that, and gave a big FU to corporate America and their office politics.

My family and I have had our SoCal Kascade 510 for 5+ years now and we love our tiny camper. Granted, it lacks some of the amenities that a full sized travel trailer will provide, but we love that it allows for an experience closer to tent camping than staying in an RV park. With that said, it does still have quite a few modern conveniences that make it perfect for getting lost without feeling like we’re out there rubbing sticks together.

Glad to hear this John. That is what we hope folks get from these videos. We don't necessarily make these intending everyone to want one of these campers. Our intention is to let you have a peek into a different trailer, layout, gear etc. I think that is where May and I pick up 80% of our new idea. Just seeing other trailers and lifestyles and integrating them into our current camping style.

This looks like a great, flexible USABLE teardrop trailer. If you are going to go small (smaller than my Casita) this seems to be a great way to do it and you can access the tent above if the weather allows it (or your camping population goes up). Or if your family has teenagers.

Great review Drew....the Escapod was one of the trailers I was considering when I made my purchase....very nicely built and designed. I know the tear drop shape sells...it's so cute... but the overall design of a tear drop has short falls in terms of efficient use of the space.... I wish more of the tear drop trailer makers would offer square drop versions of their trailers along-side the tear drop version.

Very nice teardrop, Drew and May… looks like you had a wonderful time camping with the boys. What a beautiful camper! The drawers in the galley are really great … We do use our slide-out fridge as an extra surface to work too. There’s so much to be said about the cozy nature of sleeping in a teardrop. You are so right about sleeping right to the limit of the bed because you’ll never fall off! LoL I was wondering about the weight limit of the rooftop tent. I know our T@Gxl… even with the Yakima rack, is only rated to hold just over 100 lbs. We are able to put two kayaks up there … but a tent + people would really stress it … Do the Escapods come with the rooftop tent? The month of June was filled with family togetherness… this time, “Texas came to NYS!” We had a great time! I hope you’re having a wonderful summer. - Many blessings to you, May, East and Rye. ~ Maria

This one was actually easier than Alaska. We shot this on the border of Wyoming and Utah. It was crazy. May and I woke up each morning and honestly couldn't tell we had left Alaska. We had a moose stay at the campsite all night. We thought he had left, but in the morning when May got out of the camper he gave her a grunt to let her know he was still there. And then there was bear scat everywhere at each campsite. The meadows were even covered with Alaska's state flower the Forget Me Not. Well, at least that is what we think they were. Haha. "Something about the heavyness of these plates". Plastic, plastic composite, light weight plates can be picked up, flipped and such in heavy gusts. having something like that, without a "lip" to catch wind under it, that has a good weight of its own and isn't likely to get blown around when empty, is useful not just in RV's but on boats.

Great overview Drew, and I can't believe how quickly your boys are growing! That looks like a very impressive trailer, however the outdoor galley seems a bit high for shorter people, do they supply a footstool? ☺️ Another great feature is they credit up to 2 nights of rental fees toward a purchase, for those that want to try before buying. I love May's comments: the kids are inside the trailer so I finally get to make dinner in peace, and she finally escaped mommy jail to admire the night sky ☺️

Sometimes smaller is better, we have an rv that we camp with most of the time. We also have a sailboat that we camp on also, both 23 feet. Honestly I think we have more fun camping on the boat than with the rv. Sometimes we take both but then everyone sleeps in the rv not the sailboat, not as much fun. I can see where that little trailer could be lots of fun, well until it's starts to rain anyway.

That is such a tough question. And to be honest it changes yearly for us as our camping needs change. The Escapod is right there in our top 3. And I think for many people it would be #1. It is tough because camping and trailers is definitely not a one size fits all. What works best for us, may not be the best for others obviously. So for example. May is 5 feet tall, so that brings it's own challenges with a trailer that others may not have. But, for our family here is our current list of needs. Aesthetically we want the shape to be a classic teardrop or close to a classic style. We want the ability to mount a rooftop tent and racks. We want enough clearance to get out to all our favorite boondocking locations, but not so much that our tow vehicle is the limiting factor. We want a layout that makes sense. Meaning the builder actually camps. And then the last, but probably most important we want something that is built to be handed down to our grandchildren. That is a big ask. But, I think there are a handful of companies like Escapod that are making trailers that are built to last. We tend to lean towards composite materials like Escapod's' new Topo 2 and all the Bean Trailers. We are big fans of minimal maintenance at this stage of our life and not having to worry about potential water intrusion. BUT, at the same time my favorite teardrop is a good old stick built, warm wood interior design. If I didn't have such a busy life with a family and KZfaq videos I would go the traditional route and just baby the trailer a bit more. I love the history behind them, the feel, the look, etc. I know this was a bit vague, but hope this kind of answers your question.

@PlayingwithSticks
@PlayingwithSticks Жыл бұрын
We should be seeing a lot more family "how to/lessons learned" videos in the near future. But as far as family camping in new trailers go, May says NO MORE! She hated leaving the Bean to try out other trailers. I get it though. Once you make a trailer your home it is hard to leave. We are really excited about our new trailer, so you will see a lot more of our family with that one. The shell of the TOPO 2 in my opinion is basically bulletproof. They just came out with a really neat new article about the vacuum infusion process behind it. escapod.us/blog/how-the-topo2-body-is-made I still have the same issue with Bean and Escapod. I think they are going beyond what is needed. I actually consider them to truly be overbuilt. A teardrop of this size, with composite materials really doesn't need to weigh this much for where 90% of us go. I get it though. For true rock crawling travel, this makes sense. But, again if we were all being honest and realistic about where we really will be taking these offroad trailers I think both companies could make an additional trailer that does the job and reduces the weight by almost 30-50%. I have been asking Mark at Bean trailer for years to make a trailer like this. Not saying he shouldn't keep making the ones he is making, because they are truly bombproof. But, I would love to see a new model within their lineup that can be easily towed by mid-size SUVs.

@PlayingwithSticks

Yes, and no. Good question. Most of these teardrops have the axle pretty far back because the majority of the weight sits in the galley kitchen and the 20+ gallon water tank is also there near the axle. But, because this is a larger off-road style trailer the tongue is quite heavy. Not ridiculously heavy. Very comparable to all offroad teardrops. Definitely takes two people to move around.

It can be hit or miss. Typically hit. Haha! Here is a tip though. May and I find in any given year if the mosquitoes are on the Kenai peninsula then they will be mild north of Anchorage. Do you have any movement on your tow hitch or have it secured with UBolt and screws? I ask because I have lots of movement and when i tow my pop up camper with a Full Size Truck I feel a tug especially when I accelerate.
@PlayingwithSticks
@PlayingwithSticks 3 жыл бұрын
We have found the more we extend the hitch. The more we raise or drop the ball. This is what really increases that movement. When we run a straight hitch where the receiver is close to the body of the tow vehicle we have very little movement. At first we were concerned with the side to side movement. We were going to bolt it down, but found when everything is shorter most of that movement goes away. In this video we were really extended and risen. And you could really feel it when towing. That darn spare tire on the Jeep can cause quite a few issues. Not just towing, but also getting into the back of the Jeep when the door can't fully swing open. But, here is my newest observation. This probably won't pertain to you because you have a full size truck. I am noticing that the movement during acceleration tends to be highly exaggerated when I increase the tongue weight. And this isn't necessarily from loading my trailer heavy. It find it happens when I load the back hatch of the tow vehicle heavily. Here is a great example. I picked up a teardrop the other day and drove it home. It towed so much better than I remember it towing the week before. Then I loaded the back of the Jeep and hooked up the same trailer, no weight added. I instantly had the tug feeling again. So this now has me realizing I not only need to focus on weight distribution in the trailer. I think this also should be a focus in the tow vehicle. And the Jeep isn't a wimpy vehicle. 3,500lb capacity without electric brakes and 5,000lbs with brakes I believe.

@@BryanBear5050 You can have a/c units installed by some manufacturers. Not all, but most. But powering it becomes your main issue. Especially when you’re out on BLM land or some other local that won’t supply shore power.

Nice! How exciting. I like the idea of the self inflators. Not only for travel, but bringing that galley down to a comfortable height when cooking. Great idea.

That’s the price for the new series the TOPO2. The one he shows is a TOPO, the original series, which starts at $20,000.

Yes, this is on the low to medium end of off-road teardrop trailers. As one of the leaders in the industry Escapod could probably charge whatever they want. So it is really refreshing to see that they keep these costs down with the competition. We just got back from an overland Expo where most of the trailers this size cost between $25K and $35K

great video, I just have to say... 10:38 ... usually I like to think everyone deserves forgiveness. but those that litter, ESPECIALLY in a place like that... permanent naptime would be too kind for them.

It is unfortunate. To make ourselves feel better we try to convince ourselves that they do not know any better. We thought about purposely filming all of our trash pickups in every video. Maybe one of them will see one of our videos and turn a new leaf. Probably far fetched, but worth a shot.

For pooping, find a nice bush, the prettiest the best, (watch out for mosquitos, ticks or spiders) dig a hole about 8” deep and 6” wide, also known as a cat hole,this hole is usually dug with a lightweight trowel, and enjoy the outdoors.

Good point. I think Escapod really has a certain demographic in mind. Take the fact that these trailers have no sink. They are targeting folks like us who prefer a teardrop without a sink. Those who prefer to be off-grid. I think they picture most owners and renters using these trailers off-grid away from the crowded campgrounds. But, with that said we still bring our potty and tent. Sometimes we go open air, sometimes it is nice to have a little cover.

I really like your channel, but as someone in their very late 60s who enjoys camping, I notice you tend to focus very much on families and younger users. These days, unless a trailer is self-contained, my wife and I can't use it. She has mobility issues and neither of us like to go outside to use a bathroom in the middle of the night. I do not particularly like RVs but I have the smallest one I could find for these reasons. If you ever think about it, showing or discussing small trailers for seniors or differently-abled people would be a welcome inclusion. We're not all 30-ish years old anymore. Thanks.

That is a great idea! We will keep our eyes open. We have had our eyes open for folks 6'5" and taller. And it now looks like we have another subcategory to consider. Thank you Tom!

@@PlayingwithSticks You're welcome, and thank you for your kind consideration. Back in 1983 a friend of mine and I tent-camped from Spokane WA to Inuvik NWT via the Dempster Highway in a 4x2 Toyota Corolla. Some country up there! Those days are long gone :-)

@@twloughlin That sounds amazing! We have never done a long trip like that. I can't imagine the places you saw. I was thinking about your comment today. I think a good resource for you would be the KZfaq channel RV blogger. Have you seen it? He has the ability due to his location, to walk through quite a few campers similar to what you have described.
