🌩️ What is an ESE Lightning Arrester?
Also known as Early Streamer Emission Lightning Arrester, this technology is designed to protect structures from direct lightning strikes. It enhances the Radius of Protection, thereby reducing the number of Lightning Arresters and Down Conductors required for comprehensive protection.
Yet, it provides complete protection. It protects by ensuring that the lightning bolts are safely channelled. Instead of striking random objects, the lightning is directed through the ESE lightning arrester. From there, the high-voltage surges are dissipated into the ground safely.
📐 What is a Lightning Arrester's Coverage Area?
The coverage area is the spatial region within which the arrester can effectively protect a structure from lightning strikes. It is represented as a semicircle with a specific radius of protection (Rp).

Radius of protection is okay but do we have to consider the tip of ese as centre of RP

Yes we will have to consider that. Please note that the center of the radius of protection (RP) would be at the tip of the Early Streamer Emission (ESE) device. However, the actual radius of protection will be calculated with reference to the horizontal plane at the required height. For example, if you have a structure with a height of 10 meters and you install the ESE device with a 5-meter mast on top of the structure, the center of the radius of protection for the 5-meter height would be at the base of the 5-meter mast, forming one horizontal plane. The same principle applies to a ground plane for a height of 15 meters.

is the h (height) means height from ground to the top of ESE's rod or from building/structure?

Hi Khalil, Generally, the height h is the one which is from the tip of the ESE air terminal to reference the horizontal plane considered through the most distant point of the object to be protected. For e.g. If ESE is installed on a 20-meter tall building with a 5-meter mast, then the horizontal plane can be the terrace of the building and height h is 5 meters. In another case with the same structure if the horizontal plane is considered from the ground then the total height h is 25 meters in which the radius of protection will vary. Hi Alamgir, It depends upon your requirement but copper has better conductivity.

Hi Nikhin, The Karnataka High court issued an order to lift the earlier ban on ESE (Early Streamer Emission) proposed under the NBC 2016. You can use ESE Lightning Arresters in India, it is being widely used everywhere.
