it’s more nuanced than that. it involves taking back power for a word that is used as a derogatory in other contexts. Quite frankly, in American society, it does matter who says it and in what context due to the history we have here and the history around that word specifically. This concept is difficult to understand if you don’t come from a place that has the same sort of history and conflict amongst ethnic/racial groups etc. It’s very different when a white person says it vs a person of color when we had up until quite recently an incredibly segregated society based upon race and the word was used as a derogatory and to denote that they were viewed as lesser, non-human. It’s something that’s a lot more complicated than y’all not from here seem to get. It isn’t racist to tell someone to not use a racial slur lmao. The word isn’t “harmless” you’re invoking all of the history related to it when using it. You have to view it from their perspective. As recently as the 1860’s African Americans were not eligible for citizenship, nor protections under american law in most of the country, and for most they were still literally property. For them to trace ancestry for many African Americans they have to go through audit paperwork and other inventory records to find details, like how one would check inventory records for a store. Many African American’s have the last names of their former slave masters to this day. miscegenation was not constitutionally protected in the US until 1967, and the last state did not repeal said laws until 2000. It really is still something we are dealing with. It’s why it is so vitriolic here. It’s also why racial slurs for white people are often laughed off, as historically they held the power so the word didn’t have the same impact. It’s a power dynamics issue between communities, and when you live in an incredibly diverse multiethnic empire like America is it is often wise to avoid conflict between said groups when possible. Otherwise our society doesn’t function. Legally you can say whatever you’d like, but it isn’t conducive to a diverse functioning society to infer that your fellow countryman is subhuman. quite the opposite actually.
