I knew my fellow Hoomans would get him to play A New Start. Such a gorgeous song and a wonderful cover. And for those wondering, there was no meter change, it's all in 6/8 time, but the slow part is just doubling the length of the notes. When it picks up that is the proper pace of it all.

That's not true, it goes from 6/8 in the verses to 2/4 in the chorus. It's actually the tempo that stays the same, but if you listen to the subdivision of the eighth notes you can hear them go from 3 in a beat in the verses (and chorus end) to 2 in a beat in the main part of the chorus. The feeling of speeding up comes from the entrance of the 16th notes to support the new 2/4 beat.
@TheatreHead
@TheatreHead 2 жыл бұрын
incorrect, the meter changes completely. if it had just gone to half time, jerod would have caught it, but it completely threw him for a loop. it's very clearly 2/4 in the chorus, there are no natural ways to do a 3 count in it.

I would love to see the sheet music for A New Start. Those transitions have to be so jank.
@Accelerando_poco
@Accelerando_poco 2 жыл бұрын
I think it maybe sounds more jank than it actually is in concept. It is a clear case of "metric modulation". Every verse is in 12/8 time, and 4/4 during the chorus. Notice how we can divide the 12 8ths up into 4 beats, which are then subdivided into 3? 4 beats of 3 equals 12 aka. 12/8! That's how we hear the verses! 🎼🎶🎶🎶🎶 Then, when the chorus kicks in, those 4 beats are suddenly subdivided into 2 instead of 3. The twelve notes became 8 🎼🎵🎵🎵🎵 This drastically changes how we hear the music! The 4 main beats still go by just as fast, but the subdivisions change tempo. Familiar but also completely new sounding - such a cool effect! The ease of changes like is what makes 12/8 my absolutely favorite time signature 😎
@huh0123
@huh0123 2 жыл бұрын
@@Accelerando_poco actually the whole song is in 4/4, I believe the tempo gets slightly faster during the chorus. The subdivisions actually don’t change from triplets to 8ths, but from 8ths to 16th’s. Just count is 4’s from the beginning and you’ll see what I mean. Edit: correcting myself, it’s starts in 4’s and ends in 3’s at the final verse.
@Accelerando_poco
@Accelerando_poco 2 жыл бұрын
@@huh0123 Aha, maybe I didn't explain well enough. Seems like we are actually saying the same thing. The point of 12/8 is to describe exactly what you say about the verses, that you are able to count in "4/4". But how 12/8 differs from 4/4 is how you subdivide each of those 4 beats into 3 smaller ones (sort of like triplets, but still in 8ths). The verse can either be counted as 4 dotted quarter notes or 12 eight notes, which is why you would use a 12/8 signature. The chorus, however, does not subdivide the beats in 3, but rather in 2, so 4/4 is much more appropriate.
@Accelerando_poco
@Accelerando_poco 2 жыл бұрын
@@huh0123 you also correctly pointed out that the tempo increases in the chorus! The 4 strong beats in 12/8 are dotted quarter notes (length of 3 8ths). You would then need to do this to make the dotted quarternotes of the verse equal to the quarternotes of the chorus by increasing the tempo 😄 This change in tempo is exactly what a "metric modulation" is 👍

Mumei song time signature confusing a lot of people since the time signature was 12/8 in the intro, verse, bridge and 4/4 in the chorus. A little tip from me : If you ever find a song that clapping the beat like the same in 3/4, 4/4, 6/8 it is a clue that maybe the time signature was 12/8. You can count 4/4 on mumei song from the beginning to the end and you will never struggle. Try it

I've read it somewhere before, music is like math. Every music follows a certain formula, with enough practice, you can recognize said formula even when you heard the song for the first time. If you can pinpoint the formula , you can play the song.
