The Book of Abramelin purports to be a text of 15th century magic with a wide range of effects though, most importantly in modern occultism, communication with one's Holy Guardian Angel. The famous famous undertaking of these rituals was performed by Aleister Crowley at House Boleskine around the dawn of the 20th century. In this episode of Esoterica, we explore this fascinating texts, its rituals and history.

Also, you can support Boleskine by buying fragments of the former structure! I did, it's fun to own some of the former Oratory where Crowley did the Abramelin.

Tysm Doctor, I enjoy learning about new things and never heard of this book until an hour ago so I researched it a tad and thankfully came across your channel where you have given me a good comprehension of this book in your opinion. Every point you made seems validated in your explanations. I normally wouldn't read this type of book anyway but I was intrigued by the part where it says something about contacting your spiritual guardian. I thought hmm, if it were possible, wouldn't everyone do it all of the time? So I wondered what it could possibly say. Not really a rabbit hole that I want to travel down tbh but I'm glad to have seen this video on the matter and I appreciate your expertise and knowledge. Such knowledge makes me want to dive into your other videos, so ty again!

Omg, my 2 favorite esoteric channels right here together! Dennis, I LOVED your intro to The Cloud of Unknowing. It was the single most profound introduction to a book I've ever read. And, Dr. Sledge, THANK YOU SO MUCH for making this channel. You are like the Cliffs Notes to so many occult/esoteric concepts, and it was because of YOU that I've bought so many books, such as Hermetica (by Copenhaver) and and The Way of Hermes (the new translation). Thank BOTH of you for helping to enrich my mind and soul, truly. I look forward to the future!

I am reading the Mathers text right now. A lot of what makes this book so fascinating is the emphasis on purity, piety, withdrawal, isolation, and the idea of enflaming oneself with prayer. I had seen Crowley use this wording in several other places and I never realized it came from Abramelin (and also from the New testament, I think).

This channel is pure gold! Thank you for the in-depth discussions of each topic in each video as well as the simple admission when something is unknown. I also want to thank you for the amount of videos that you are producing which I find extraordinary. My one request is that they eventually get grouped according to subject matter as it is sometimes difficult to find an earlier video that relates to a newer one. Your channel and Foolish Fish have opened my eyes to so much that I could devote all of my time to the study of Esoterica - ahhh if only that were possible.

Word! I find it so ridiculous that so many people want to claim so much garbage when 90% of western modern esoteric thought, in my opinion, has a Jewish origin or influence. Yet, they want to buy or bully themselves into some kind of esoteric culture to build themselves up or try to control something they don't even understand must less cultural appropriate. The dark ages was rough on them.

Marvelous, as usual... Elsewhere, I saw a quite interesting examination of angels, as they appear in ancient, Middle Eastern sources, including the Bible, especially as the ancient depictions differ sharply from the fluffy, diaphanous, Northern European-looking creatures with which many of us grew up. I wonder if Dr. Sledge would consider doing an episode focusing "the angelic", granting that it's potentially a very large topic. 🙏

Excellent presentation. Thanks! Despite the confusion about the origins and authorship of the text, the two slightly different versions, and also the sharp contrast between the latter part of the book ( the squares) with the main corpus of the text, which focuses on the essential practices to be performed to summon the HGA, and evocation of the spirits, this is an incredible grimoire which stands in its own right. I would thoroughly recommend this ritual to anyone of sane mind. Provided one follows the instructions it is one of the safest methods to learn magic, whereby one is taught about purification, invocation, transcendence, evocation and .. a lot more. That has been my own experience.

i've yet to finish reading Stephen Skinner's thesis on the connections between the PGM and Solomonic magick, but it could be an interesting topic... while reading multiple things i found how some demon-names are basically just random words from other languages like Sallos (phoenician) or Zebulon (i might remember it wrong, but it was a biblical place), so the moral of the story is that christian magicians of the medieval times had a so-so knowledge of foreign languages and couldn't realize the difference between words, names, and places

Just found your channel, by chance or design... I completed the AbraMelin 34 years ago I am now 56. I read Crowley from a very young age and experimented with ritual magic including the Goetia, the Enochian rituals, and still own the original Magick in Theory and Practice. The AbraMelin is a harsh undertaking, though many of it's components can be stripped away as unnecessary. And by no means should Mather's 'version' be taken as the truth. The sequence can be boiled down to some simple, though incredibly arduous, disciplines. And few have the patience or stomach. I have been around the occult community for a long time now, since my teens. In that time I have met only a very few that have lived it real time...the rest are in mental institutions. The AbraMelin works...if you are clever enough to work it. I didn't get to meet my HGA, but I did get to meet all of my demons. Some I have overcome, some I may never will. My only advice if you want to take on the AbraMelin ? Be sure, be prepared to lose a lot and be ready for the consequences. That said, your 'life' will never, ever be the same again. Oh and be careful what you wish for... J.

...what you wish for? Mh, would you care to elaborate on that? As I know it, the Abramelin isn't a ritual you undertake to have wishes granted. It can actually scrambre you and your life for the years to come, as a primary consequence.

@@Chickenface12345 Hi, thanks for your reply. The overall aim of the sequence is to attain communion with your Holy Guardian Angel and thus a complete understanding of self and your motivations. Some take it literally in that they expect to meet supernatural beings (the film 'A Dark Song' is a good example of a modern working loosely based on the Abramelin) others see it as a mental exercise (Liber MMM is a comparable modern working). For me I met my demons, some as quite subtle 'isms' and learned behaviour, others as full on character flaws. Which when you become aware of them can be approached and adjusted. I didn't meet my HGA but I am given to believe on doing so you can ask for and receive your wishes. Whether that is on a supernatural level like the genie in the bottle, or an epiphany that allows you to give full focus to your true self, is I guess conjecture. In saying be careful what you wish for ? If you undertake the working be prepared to meet some darker aspects of yourself is all... Thanks.

@JayKaos so I'm trying to understand all this, I find it fascinating. Did Crowley summon demons at Boleskine? Or no? It all seems so complicated, the ritual I mean.
@JayKaos
@JayKaos 4 ай бұрын
@@angelwalker979 Crowley aborted the ritual part way in but by then had put the sequence in motion. As even a witch will tell you, you always close your working or it leaves residual influences. Boleskine was left with those influences and Crowley had demons he didn't address. Hence dying broke and lonely in a pit in Hastings. The ritual itself if done from the old text is indeed complex. I took it down to its roots and dispensed with the unnecessary. However the requirements of discipline, mentally and physically remain the same and must be observed. If you choose to initiate the sequence read the original text thoroughly. Plan appropriately and remember that this is a process of change. I found all of my demons, recognising them in yourself is a victory all by itself. All of your demons can be dealt with once you expose them. I am happy that mine are under control. I'm not disappointed that I didn't meet my HGA, I rather think he or she is working behind the scenes and always has been. 2 things. If you haven't already watch a film called 'A Dark Song' it is the only Abra Melin based work out there and will give you an idea. 2nd, if you embark on the ritual be prepared for 3 months of change to many aspects of your life. If you have the determination that is... Good luck in your choices, here if you want to sound off. J.

Back around 1990/1991, I had a visual encounter with a grayish horrid face with a serpentine body that came out of a cloud like shimmering essence near the ceiling. It was terrifying but rather than remain in fear, I surrendered to it, changed my internal state and projected love onto it. The horrid face then changed into a beautiful smooth porcelain-like ivory radiant mask (sun-like) with brownish eyes. I remember there were illuminated silken strands flowing behind the face. After my projection of love, that face of elegance smiled at me and projected intense love back at me. I then felt although I was rising out of my body towards it as I fell back asleep. That is the only time in my life so far that I saw such an emanation, a discharge of divine radiance…once was enough to realize the universe is much more mysterious than we could ever imagine.

"once was enough to realize the universe is much more mysterious than we could ever imagine." - Sadly **A LOT** of people have no such experience and therefore have no basis for the reality of "god" and can only ever wonder about it as an idea. We are truly gifted with something to base our reality off of.

Great video, as usual. I wonder, do you have any book recommendations about the nature and belief of magic, especially about the questions: "What makes gods/demons/spirits/the Cosmos obey the spell, and why only if I use a certain language and certain rites? Did someone make an ancient pact with them and those were the terms?" and "How do ancient magic practitioners view failure? If I try to summon a castle (as I learned from this channel) and there is no castle to be found, have I done something wrong or is there another force working against me?"

This is so fascinating. Thank you for sharing this. I am from Edinburgh Scotland. I’ve never visited this house. I think I may need to go visit it. P.s, I am studying Hermetic Qabalah. Can you please tell me what are the main differences from Jewish and Western practices? I feel so confused as I read. Thanks.

After a productive conversation with someone today, it seems I have let my personal feeling about Crowley cloud my appreciation of his contribution to things occult. With that said, could you recommend a book or three that would help me get a better understanding of the significance of his contributions, and help give some perspective?
