Bill Kelliher's last signature model, the ESP LTD BK-600 was my favorite guitar that I demoed in 2016. For 2017, the Mastodon man and LTD have returned with the more unconventional-looking Sparrowhawk. Armed with gold hardware and the lower output Lace Divinator pickups (which are still pretty dang hot), does this guitar SOAR, or does it fall short?

I love this guitar from just seeing and hearing it, but never playing it. It reminds me of the Jackson Dominions that Mark Morton uses, but I like those quite a bit more for aesthetic. I agree that there should have been full body binding as well, nothing else needs changed aside from that and some more color options, silver burst would be insane.

I owned quite a few World Music Korea built LTD's. Every one needed a fret level out of the box including the Snakebyte and BK-600. I can deal with that myself. However, many of them had weak necks and I'd have to crank the truss rod nearly to its limit to get the relief where I like it. I've learned that while the Korean LTD's look great at first, the cut corners become apparent when you live with them for a while.

I'd like to hear the guitar through a British voiced amp since Mastodon play through Orange and Friedman. or a preamp pedal like the Friedman BE-OD, Orange Bax Bangeetar, Wampler Pinnacle or Catapulp... you get the idea. Great reviews by the way! have you had a chance to check out and/or review the new LTD EC-1000 with a Plek'd fretboard????
@StephenNorman
@StephenNorman 6 жыл бұрын
I've got one of these on order. Hopefully the QC is better with this than with my EC-1000 which had the pickups routed completely off centre making it almost impossible to balance the sound of pickups from 1st to 6th string.

Let me tell you, I would NEVER even walk up to this guitar in a music shop. I had an online friend that wanted to do some trading and mentioned trading me an LTD for my Gibson LP Tribute, which I just thought was hysterical but said come on over and jam we'll see what's what. Long story short, he left with my Gibson. I have 30 guitars and this is the one I record with. The thing is amazing, sounds fantastic, all top appointments, was better than the Gibson in every respect. Much faster, solid neck. No regrets.

I swear that opening riff (that you jammed a lot near the end) sounds exactly like the bass line of an old Bent Circus song which was an awesome local band I was into growing up. Great demo though. I am totally into those pickups but not so much the guitar. I would buy the BK-600 and then swap the pickups.

Had to return my BK 600 back due to a defect in the binding. I was disappointed since I heard so many good things out of the South Korea factory. Maybe the Koreans had a bad day so I've decided to give ESP a second chance. I'm waiting for my BK600 to arrive mid January.

Hey Agufish, Random question for you. I know that you used to have the 6505 combo and now you have the 120 W head that you play through a 2x12. How do the two amps compare, especially at bedroom levels? I know the 120 w is total overkill but does it still sound good with the volume way down? I have the combo right now and I'm going to sell it this week. I have an Orange 2x12 and I'm trying to decide if it would be a stupid move to buy the full sized head.

Uggghhh because I'm a moron. The Sparrowhawk came set up for a half step down, and the song is in Drop B. The Digitech pedal is almost completely transparent for 4 semi-tones down. I was super excited about this guitar until I saw that where I live in Australia they are $2400. At today's exchange rate that's US$1810. I'm sorry but if I'm paying $1810 for a guitar it sure as hell isn't going to be made in Korea. Nothing against Korean guitars but this thing is way overpriced. For that money I expect all the binding, real inlays that don't look plastic and a selection of colour options. I love the shape, I'm a huge non-reverse firebird fan, but I hate the military matte finish. At least do a Silverburst. As for you Hunter, why the fuck have you only got 7k subs? You are better than guys with 500k subs. Keep up the good work and great content.
@agufish
@agufish 7 жыл бұрын
Wow you Aussies get absolutely shafted. For that money you may as well fly to Japan itself, walk into a shop, and pick up a genuine ESP. And I hear ya, Korean guitars are great, but the lower cost of production means your wallet shouldn't be hit as hard. And I dunno lol. I do like how I can still keep up with the comments at this channel size though.

Yep, it retails at 1590€ (~US$1800) in France (without a case as that accessory is only for US customers...). Great guitar, I really liked the Lace Sensor pickups but the finish quickly collects all fingerprints. At that price level, they could use MOP inlays (Zakk Wylde guitars do...).

Fred D. Yes it's a gig bag only for this in Australia as well. Just another reason why I won't buy it. I got the Brent Hinds signature Flying V Custom landed from Germany for US$660 from Thomann.de The Sparrowhawk is NOT three times better than that, so why does it cost three times as much?

Lol that could be it. And after my ESP, I wired up my own Gibson in the same way, with the bridge controls closer than the neck controls haha!

Bill Kelliher uses the ESP version, so don't think you're getting what he actually has. Once you get past that. it's a great guitar.

I just traded a Gibson LP Tribute for one of these. Very surprised with it. Better guitar in almost every respect. Plays great and sounds really mean.

Love the colour combination and the pickup's overall tone ! Definitely a great guitar despite the fact that I'm not really into the body shape ! Best part tho --> 2:57 to 3:33 I fuck with this wayyyy too much. Excellent playing sir !

Body isn't bad. I have an RD artist. So I like the shape. Like the pickups. Snarly! The inlays, are they MOP or Mother of toilet seat?
@agufish
@agufish 7 жыл бұрын
Lol if by Mother of Toilet Seat you mean Pearloid, then yes, that one. They look decent though. Restrictions on white abalone (which looks very similar to MoP) and the difficulty of educating customs officers to be able to differentiate between them means MoP is generally more trouble than it's worth.

These subsidiary brands like Ltd, Epiphone, squire etc etc are getting way over priced IMO,even if it is a signature model with upgraded pickups! I can buy an American fender or Gibson (new) for that price!!!! I'll definitely pass! Great demo though!

raze101 LTD is pretty different from Epiphone and squire. Full ESP's made in Japan can only be sold by authorized dealers, so seeing one isn't common, and on top of that they are expensive as hell. LTD basically brings ESP to the general market for a more affordable price, and LTD's are actually really nice. I have an MH-350 and it plays and looks amazing. Squire and Epiphone are basically just budget versions of the more expensive brand models, but those expensive brand models are pretty easy to find.

the biggest disappointment in signature gear like this is the fact that people buy them to try and sound like there idols etc. but 9 out of 10 times they dont even use them for recording albums same with the amps on a lot of occasions as a lot be whats available in the studio. anyone who knows anything about Mastodon will know that they record with mainly Custom Les pauls/Flying V's with traditional PUPS, these signature models are more what they play live which most of the time sounds nothing like the recorded version in tone.
