There was something beautiful about seeing conways game of life on a flip dot display.

Ikr, for 10 seconds I was like "is this game of life?"

It feels like the solid material would react itself, like chemicals or so.

Our version of the game didn't have sound, but I imagined it would sound kinda like this.

I agree: this is probably the most beautiful implementation of Conway's I've ever seen, thanks to the flipdot display. Makes me want one even more.

Hanover is easily one of the best sign companies out there. I worked with their products a lot and their support team was the absolute best

@@blstcblender190 nope. You wish though. I was an electrical engineer for a transit bus manufacturer with REV Group. No affiliation with Hanover other than we installed their signs into their busses.

That's pretty epic. Are flipdots going to be the next demoscene?

Add some delay when refreshing the screen, some pixels do not change probably cuz of speed. Nice job anyway, cool af

Amazing! Does using more dot boards reduce fps?
@ndoo_3 жыл бұрын
only actual dot flips take a significant amount of time, so speed really only depends on how many dots need to be flipped. but also, they have to be flipped in sequence, so more dot boards could mean more dot flips, and then it’ll take more time.

what if you design it to display the other side an have more dots for better detail, could get a lot more attention then you've already gotten.

so the ESP32 acts basically as a graphics card here, right? cool!

This is a strange place to ask questions but I just want to talk to someone with experience. I have an application I think one of these would be perfect for but it has to fit in a 9.5"x9.5" form factor. Where did you get yours/where would you recommend someone search for one without spending atrocious amounts of money? I've seen ebay has a few but taken off of busses they are all waaaay too large and hence pricey (not to mention the controller!).

mine are salvaged from Hong Kong buses. 32*32 Hanover dot boards were only ever used in Hong Kong as the higher density is required to display complex traditional Chinese characters. shipping is prohibitively expensive but rates between Hong Kong to me in Singapore weren’t too bad as we’re geographically close and have cheap express shipping options. I’ve also checked some into flights when I was commuting frequently between Hong Kong and Singapore for work. The dots themselves are made by Alfa-Zeta but the specific octagonal dots Hanover used are no longer in production, though Alfa-Zeta does have some NOS they’ll sell you if you email them. Alfa-Zeta also has newer designs and modules and you’ll see them at the website linked in the comments above.

Nice! Do you have a spare controller board to spare or how can I have one made? I have a Hanover model with 84 x 7 matrix. I'm based in KL Msia.

Welcome! Can you help me? Today I received 2 similar Hanover Display type flipdot displays. But I don't have a controller yet. How can I get the display on your test? As well as from a PC, how can I control it? Thank you very much in advance for your help.

It triggers me that there are soo many broken dots.

they’re all functional, some are just slower to flip and i did set the pulse duration aggressively low to get more speed.
