On my trip to Perris, California on September 12th, 2022, I spotted a group of very rare Caterpillar 660B scrapers sitting on the Ritchie Brothers Auctioneers' lot and was lucky enough to get access to shoot some videos of them.
These first 2 were repowered with 600-horsepower Series-60 Detroit Diesels. I'm not sure what years the scrapers were built, most likely the 1970's, but the Detroit engines under the hoods had 2003 dates of manufacture, so I presume the conversion took place in the 2003-2004-time frame.
One of the employees of Ritchie Bros, who coincidentally was already a subscriber of mine 👍, said that these units had already been sold. I don't know to whom or where, but I felt very lucky to be able to get such close access to some scrapers that I thought I'd never see again. I hope they've got more working years ahead of them and not a date with the torch.
Please 👍. Thank you, enjoy.

They sure are beastly and intimidating. And I'm sure they can put a body through the wringer. Thanks Dave for tuning-in.

MY kind of stuff but never got to herd anything that big. I was around 830's in the Army but not panning. Pushing stockpiles with their front mounted blade but got to ride along on one with a pan. Rode like a rocking chair instead of bang bang bang like a regular 4-wheel pan. A TS-24 and an old 631 were the biggest I got to be beaten up on but mostly a TS-14 because of tight and rough places. The 60-series probably replaced a 3408 or maybe a 12. Lots lighter on fuel. TS were Terex/Euc twin engine 4x4's. 24's had a 12-V front, 6-71 in back. 14's were 4-71 both ends. Thanks, Scotty! Happy day 2 U!

I was sure happy to get to see these big old gals. I would have been over the moon if these were the twin engine 666's, but a 660 isn't a scraper to take lightly. Neat that you got some scraper time and stories under your belt AND that you can still hear, I presume, after running twin Detroit TS's. Thanks for watching Lewie. I thought this one might perk you up a bit.

@@espeescotty The 24's with the 12V-71 in front and were pretty quiet compaired to the 6-71 in back that had a straight pipe maybe 2 feet long with a 45 turn out at the top. You could barely hear a hiss from it when the 12 was running any speed at all. The 14's were muffled on both ends and a 4 is a lot quieter than a 12. They'd go like a Jeep loaded or empty. The 14 was on the road job below home and I liked it because it was a short haul in rough places. The 24 was on a long haul on a dam. Not my ideal. And my head rings but always has.I was wanting to try a 7627 push/pull with a flating gooseneck but it never happened. I guess I'm wrecked enough!

The reason for the conversion to the Detroit is for California emissions. These engines met the emissions requirements at that time and the old Cat engines did not. If they wanted to keep using them in California the only option was repower. Sadly the reason why they are not in California working now is the engines they repowered them with do not meet the latest emissions standards, so they were shipped out of state to be used. Check out SOCALEARTHMOVERS channel. He has videos with them working just a few years ago. Probably the same units.

Yes, thanks for pointing that out for those who didn't know why these were repowered. I have seen the SoCalEarthmovers vids of these in action. As I was looking them over, I kept wondering if these were the exact same ones I was seeing in the videos from years ago. I'm sure they are.

@@espeescotty It is amazing they are in as good of condition based on their age. They probably have 30,000+ hours on them and there are not all broken up. I did not see a bunch of welds on them.

I could actually park 3 of those in my backyard, you know, just for those weekend projects. It would be a skosh tight, and the HOA would get their panties in a wad over them, but as you said, they are perfect for those little weekend jobs. 😀👍

I could learn how to run'um. Some would say putting a Detroit in a Cat is like putting a CAT in a MACK. But if it runs and it's paid for making money. That's the important thing. Did they add an Allison automatic as well?

Cat tranny. And a 3406 will pull like a Mack if it's set up right.

They got almost a 20-year extension of being able to run in Cali with the swap. That was long enough to let SoCalEarthMovers get some really good videos of them in action. 👍 I didn't see what kind of trans was in them.

@@espeescotty SoCal were THE ones! Cat tranny. The rock trucks have the 6 and 7 speeds. The pedal under your left foot was for the posi-traction. I think the hand valve was for a retarder. Never ran one with one.

Cut em up for scrap. They were always ball busters, just junk. In this day and age, they are obsolete.
